Buy British buses to save 400 Scottish jobs at Alexander Dennis, says MP
EXCLUSIVE: Euan Stainbank said procurement rules needed reform to ensure UK manufacturers were given priority when it came to investing in public transport. Holyrood and Westminster must "buy British" if 400 Scottish jobs are to be saved at an historic bus manufacturer, an MP has said. Euan Stainbank said strict procurement rules should be reformed to ensure UK manufacturers are given priority when it comes to investing in the public transport of the future. The Labour MP for Falkirk is campaigning to save jobs in his constituency at two closure-threatened Alexander Dennis (ADL) factories. Bosses at the firm launched a consultation last month on plans to shutter the plants at Camelon and Larbert and centralise production in Scarborough. The move would end a century of bus building in the Falkirk district and comes just weeks after the oil refinery at nearby Grangemouth was shut down, with 400 jobs lost. Stainbank told the Record: "There's global momentum to decarbonise transport. The UK must lead — not fall behind. A greener bus network should mean jobs and prosperity. But only if we have the right strategy. "In 2020, Boris Johnson promised to deliver 4,000 zero-emission buses, built in Britain. By 2024, only about 2,270 had been delivered through the ZEBRA scheme, with nearly half made abroad — despite £312 million in taxpayer funding. "Scotland has seen worse. In the most recent ScotZEB2 scheme, over 80 per cent of buses were ordered from overseas. Just 44 of 252 orders went to Scottish producers. That's simply unacceptable — 400 skilled jobs in Falkirk are at stake. "We cannot justify using UK public money to support foreign competitors while British factories struggle. A global economy doesn't mean outsourcing opportunity. It means competing with confidence — and with a plan. "Manchester has shown what leadership looks like. Under Mayor Andy Burnham, the Bee Network brought buses back under public control and procured the fleet domestically, including from Falkirk." The Falkirk MP added: "Ministers have shown they're willing to intervene, from supporting British steel in Scunthorpe to committing £200 million to Grangemouth. Now they must act to safeguard UK bus manufacturing. "For the 400 workers at Alexander Dennis, this isn't an abstract policy debate — it's their future. These are the people who have helped build the UK's low-carbon transport network. "They deserve more than warm words. We have the skills. We have the capacity. We have the need. Now we need the political will to back British buses — for British passengers, with British workers." Shona Robison, the SNP Finance Secretary, welcomed the announcement last week that ADL had extended its consultation on potential job losses - allowing more time to find an alternative. She said: "The company has been clear there are a number of factors that impact on its decision about the future of its workforce in Scotland - the availability of orders both in the short and long term, changes to the regulatory landscape around procurement, and assistance in supporting a short-term company furlough scheme. "The Scottish Government is continuing to work tirelessly on this issue, and is maintaining close contact with the company, the unions and the UK Government to understand all options to support the workforce."

First electric bus for Falmouth, Cornwall to cut carbon emissions
The first electric bus for Cornwall has been launched in Falmouth as part of a shuttle service that will serve the town centre and cut carbon Council has spent £2.1m and the Government's Zero Emission Bus Regional Area 2 (ZEBRA) has contributed £1.3m to fund the scheme. The scheme will also pay for a complete new fleet of the Park and Ride bus service in Truro which is arriving in October. Six electric buses are also being introduced on the Rame Peninsula in the coming weeks, part of a wider £10.3m ZEBRA 2 funding, £1.9m investment from Cornwall and Plymouth councils and £19.6m from Plymouth Citybus. The first passengers on the new Falmouth service were Sarah and Paul Newstead who had just started using their new free bus passes. Mrs Newstead said "Seems fine, smooth journey, it's very quiet."Her husband Paul said "Yes, it's good that it's not pumping out any emissions around the town." Passenger Fiona Wellington said she had just started using the bus because she was finding it difficult to walk. She exclaimed "This is the first electric bus. Rock and roll." Ziggy was the first dog on the new electric service with his owner Michael Moore."It's quieter, moving the right way forward with less emissions. It's a better thing long term," said Mr Moore. Also on the bus was Dan Rogerson, cabinet member for transport at Cornwall Council."Our buses rack up the miles over the years, with almost a quarter of Cornwall's carbon emissions coming from road transport."We want to reduce our impact on our environment wherever we can."Falmouth's bus is just the start, and work is progressing on putting in the infrastructure to run services in the Rame Peninsula and Truro city centre. "It's a step in the right direction and we'll be looking for further funding opportunities to bring more electric buses to Cornwall," he said. The new electric bus in Falmouth is the 60 service which runs through the pedestrian part of the town. The proximity to shoppers and open shop fronts will make a difference both with noise and air quality. The bus operator Office and Transport Services (OTS) has contributed £105,000 towards the 18-seater service and Falmouth Town Council has funded £5,000. Craig George, from OTS, said: "As a Falmouth-based business, we've wanted for so long to bring a zero emission vehicle to the streets of our town. "It has been a really positive experience to work with Cornwall Council, Falmouth Town Council and the Department for Transport who proactively share our vision to deliver cleaner buses for the benefit of all in our local community. "To deliver the first vehicle in service to come from this larger partnership project is simply the icing on the cake, and we're very proud to be leading the charge towards the future of bus travel."The bus is charged up overnight at the OTS depot to enable it to run 27 round trips through Falmouth and a school service, all from 0715 BST to 18.15 BST with 25% battery left at the end of the day.

ZEBRA Launches THE LIP GLOSS - CLEAR, Continuing Its Mission to Deliver Elevated Non-Toxic Personal Care
Dallas, TX, May 22, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ZEBRA, the personal care brand founded by clean wellness advocate Jenn Thatcher, has officially expanded into the beauty space with the launch of THE LIP GLOSS - CLEAR, a high-shine, non-toxic gloss designed for long-lasting hydration and a mirror-like finish. This latest launch marks a significant milestone for ZEBRA as it moves beyond oral care into broader categories of personal wellness. True to the brand's founding mission, the gloss is formulated with a short, transparent list of nourishing ingredients, free from synthetic dyes, artificial fragrances, parabens, and known endocrine disruptors. Each element of the formula was selected with purpose, reflecting ZEBRA's signature approach: black and white ingredient standards – no gray areas. 'We deserve products that are both beautiful and biologically supportive,' said Thatcher. 'This gloss represents years of careful formulation, without shortcuts.' Key Features of THE LIP GLOSS - CLEAR: THE LIP GLOSS - CLEAR builds on ZEBRA's rapid growth in the oral care category, where it became known for its hydroxyapatite-free formulas. While hydroxyapatite is often widely promoted as a 'safe fluoride alternative,' ZEBRA took a different approach based on emerging research on micro- and nano-sized particles and their potential to cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the body's organs. 'At ZEBRA, we've never been afraid to challenge the norm if it means doing what's right,' said Thatcher. 'Our values are rooted in clarity, purpose, and honoring the body the way our Creator intended. We're here to create formulas that support wellness, not compromise it. That commitment continues with this gloss. Consumers are paying more attention than ever to what's in their products, and this launch reflects our promise to meet that demand with transparency, integrity, and intention, not trends.' Jenn Thatcher As wellness-minded consumers increasingly seek transparency from personal care brands, ZEBRA's expansion into beauty reflects growing demand for clean, multi-category alternatives. The brand has cultivated a loyal following of mothers and health-conscious consumers – many inspired by Thatcher's 'MAHA Mom' (Make America Healthy Again) initiative – who prioritize products grounded in integrity, safety, and purpose.
