Empangeni road closures as King Cetshwayo July kicks off
Motorists travelling in and out of the Empangeni CBD should expect some road closures owing to the King Cetshwayo street parade this (Friday) afternoon. The parade marks the commencement of the King Cetshwayo July, a horse racing spectacular that takes place at the Empangeni Airfield tomorrow (Saturday). ALSO READ: WATCH: All systems go for King Cetshwayo July horse racing extravaganza During this afternoon's street carnival, several roads, including Commercial, Turnbull, Hancock, Union, and Maxwell and Biyela streets, will be affected. The district is expected to be a hive of activity this weekend, with the crowning of Mr & Miss King Cetshwayo July expected this evening, while the main horse racing event is scheduled for Saturday, and the KZN Premier's Cup in Richards Bay on Sunday. Missionary outreach uplifts Empangeni inmates
Hope pierced the walls of Empangeni Qalakabusha Correction Facility when a group of volunteers from Kairos Prison Ministry stepped inside. Kairos, meaning 'God's special timing', saw 30 volunteers participate in the outreach earlier this month, with 21 men entering the prison for ministry work, while eight women prepared meals for the inmates and Kairos team. There were 24 prisoners who, each day, received messages of hope and God's love. ALSO READ: Ordination marks 30 years in ministry for Richards Bay pastor 'May the Holy Spirit spread like wildfire in that dark place, bringing many to salvation,' said Trevor Watson, KZN Kairos state chair. While Koos Robbetse, a member of the worship team, said he witnessed first hand how music became a vessel for healing. 'There was something profoundly beautiful about hearing voices joined together in praise, especially from men who carry so much pain and regret. You could feel the presence of God moving in the room. 'Kairos is more than just a programme – it's a spiritual lifeline. It brings the message that no matter where you are in life, God's grace reaches you.' 'This experience has left a lasting mark on me. You may go in thinking you're there to help others, but you'll come out changed yourself,' said Koos. IFP retains highly contested KZN ward
A FIERCELY-contested by-election on Wednesday saw the IFP retain Ward 23 with 1 559 votes. In second place was the ANC with 648 votes, MK Party with 567 votes, EFF with 188 votes, and the Labour Party with 68 votes. ALSO READ: Vehicle ploughs into residential wall in Empangeni IFP KZN Deputy Chairperson Inkosi Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala said, 'This remarkable victory is a testament to the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of IFP volunteers, members and leaders who dedicated themselves to the intense campaign.' He called on newly elected Ward Councillor Samkelo Myeni to emulate the 'exemplary leadership of IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi', adding that they will continue this momentum going into the 2026 local elections. ANC Provincial Spokesperson Fanle Sibisi also thanked the 'structures on the ground' for their support. 'The ANC is immensely proud of your efforts to defend democracy and uphold the values of justice, fairness and people-centred governance. Richards Bay fraud accused case remanded
The trial for businesswomen and fraud accused Rhana Naicker and her four co-accused was on Tuesday postponed at the Richards Bay Magistrate's Court. It was set for this week but remanded to October as one of the accused was booked off sick and a new date will be set. Naicker faces charges of fraud relating to mismanagement or embezzlement of funds to the tune of R75 000 from the Richards Bay Diwali Committee NPO.
