Gavin Hunt fired up for fresh start with Durban City after SuperSport exit
Gavin Hunt is back in the game ands is plotting Durban City's top-flight survival ahead of their debut Betway Premiership season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix It would be stretching it to say he was like a kid in a sweet shop, but Gavin Hunt has certainly got his mojo back following an uncharacteristic enforced break from the game after being sacked by SuperSport United midway through last season. At the launch of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season in Sandton on Tuesday, the multiple championship-winning coach's excitement at returning to the coalface of the game he lives for was palpable. You fall in love with the game again.' Hunt has found his football rebirth at newly-promoted Durban City, having been sent out to pasture by SuperSport. So it's understandable that his passion for the game has been rekindled. 'Sometimes you fall out of love with the game when things happen like it happened,' he told the media contingent. 'But it is what it is. We could have made the top eight if I had stayed, but …' That chapter now closed, the man who led SuperSport to three successive league titles faces a new challenge — guiding the top-flight newcomers to safety and avoiding the fate of so many rookies: a swift return to the lower division. He is embracing the task with characteristic energy. 'It's a situation where you can really build something, go forward and try to build a team. Obviously you need a little bit of time, but in football sometimes there's no time.' Hunt believes he has a decent squad at his disposal — one he hopes to mould into a competitive outfit. 'There are a few young players; good players and proper players of a proper age. There's not too many old players, so we can build there.' Inevitably, he was quizzed about working with Ernst Middendorp, the club's technical director. Given both men's reputations for being strong-headed, many expect fireworks. 'It's different obviously, you know — but, ja — we are working well together. There's no problems. You can't say two bulls in a kraal. I've got to make a decision and obviously that decision falls on me. It is what it is. It's nothing unusual.' He dismissed suggestions that he should be watching his back given there's another coach in the mix: 'People who walk like that on the wall don't trust in their own abilities.' For now, survival is Durban City's clear goal — but with a coach as experienced and accomplished as Hunt at the helm, they surely can afford to dream a little bigger.

Ntongande High School champions spring SA netball surprise
Working their way up through the stages, Ntongande High School climbed to the top, winning the U16 South African Schools Netball National Championship. The first-time entrants embarked on their journey by playing at zonal level in Richards Bay, winning all three games against Siphumelele, Mkhayideni and Lizwi high schools. They went on to play at district level against Mkhayideni, Welabasha, Khombindlela and Dlamvuzo High, where they obtained position one by winning all their games. They then proceeded to represent King Cetshwayo District at provincial level, playing against Slethukukhanya and Isambulo, again winning both games, allowing them to represent KZN at national level. Here, 19 schools from across South Africa competed, with Ntongande High victorious in all their matches, earning them the 2025 U16 National Champions title. 'It was a very hard journey as we are a no-fee school. We tried various sponsors without success, but with the aid of the school governing body, the learners were able to take part,' said teacher HJ Mpotshane. He thanked the Dreamfields organisation which provided netball kit and shoes for all the players as they usually play barefoot. 'We would also like to acknowledge the Helpmekaar netball team which provided shoes and hampers. The school has many talented learners but faces a lot of issues when it comes to participating in sporting events due to limited finance and resources,' said Mpotshane. Don't have the ZO app? Barker hails Stellenbosch's tactical edge after MTN8 extra-time thriller
Langelihle Phili celebrates his extra-time winner as Stellenbosch edge AmaZulu 3-2 in an MTN8 classic at Danie Craven Stadium. Photo: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Media Image: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Media Steve Barker, the Stellenbosch FC coach, said his side's tactical savvy allowed them to emerge victorious in a pulsating five-goal thriller against AmaZulu in the MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday in Cape Town. The hosts, Stellenbosch, conceded two goals due to errors and concentration lapses, but the team recovered well to score 'well-worked' goals. Barker highlighted his squad's ability to respond effectively and secure a place in the next round of the tournament. 'We found a way back into the game with a well-worked goal and then followed up with a good free-kick from Sanele Barns,' remarked Barker, reflecting on his side's performance. 'It was a tough match; we had to dig deep.' The match was physically demanding, with players visibly struggling with cramps as it extended into extra-time — a testament to the rigorous nature of their season opener. Barker noted that the bumpy, hard pitch detracted from his side's playing style. 'The players were cramping in the first game of the season, playing 120 minutes. Maybe we did not play enough pre-season friendlies. The pitch was difficult, and the ball bounced a lot,' he explained. Stellenbosch started brightly, displaying good possession, which Barker found encouraging. However, defensive errors crept in as they conceded goals from set-pieces, which he described as a frustrating aspect of their play. 'Unfortunately, we gave away the sort of goals that we do not like to be conceding from a second or third phase set-piece,' he elaborated. Never one to shy away from the challenges of the game, Barker embraced the lessons that come from such high-stakes situations. 'If you ever want to win trophies and be in semi-finals, sometimes you have just got to find a way to win a game,' he stated, illustrating the duality of joy and frustration that every football coach faces. Barker praised the performance of Langelihle Phili, whose pivotal goal not only clinched the match but also marked a significant moment in his fledgling career. Phili, a member of the victorious South Africa Under-20 squad at the 2025 AFCON, seized his opportunity with great poise. 'I'm pleased for a player like Phili to be allowed to come on at the time he did and to get the winning goal,' Barker reflected on the player's impact during a critical phase. Player of the Match Sanele Barns curled home a sublime free-kick to draw Stellenbosch level in their MTN8 quarter-final clash against AmaZulu.
