Alexi Lalas' Best U.S. XI: Why Turner still starts in goal over Freese

Trying to build the best 11-man squad for a full-strength U.S. men's national team is an interesting little exercise — and one that coach Mauricio Pochettino is hoping he'll have the opportunity to do in the next international window. We're coming off of a Gold Cup where a lot of people were excited, or at least enticed, to be back in the U.S. men's national team tent, and with that excitement comes curiosity about who will start for the United States at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Let's start in goal. There's been so much talk about Matt Freese, who had a viral moment with his penalty saves against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals. But other than that, he didn't stand on his head in any of the games (though, to be fair, he wasn't challenged in a lot of the games). In the Mexico game, I don't think he could have done anything, and he was dependable other than the mistake that he made in the group stage. But you need to more than dependable — you need to have that moment where you establish yourself. I still think he'll get called in, but I also think that, maybe, Matt Turner's sitting on the side like, 'Yeah, how do you like me now?' If there was a game tomorrow, I'd go with Matt Turner in goal, as much as it pains me. But I still think there's a competition. The wild card is Zack Steffen, who I think, if/ when healthy, will legitimately challenge for that goalkeeper position. For now, it's still Matt Turner's to lose. Rapids GK Zack Steffen has knee surgery, out 4-6 weeks

June 10 - Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen underwent right knee surgery and will miss four to six weeks, the team announced Tuesday. The injury puts Steffen out of the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. He sustained the injury during a practice with the U.S. national team last week. The surgery repaired Steffen's right medial meniscus. Steffen, 30, has made 30 career appearances for USMNT. Steffen has not played for the Rapids since May 14 against San Diego FC. Nicolas Hansen has filled in over the past four matches and the Rapids have two wins and two losses. Steffen is in his second season with the Rapids. In 11 starts in 2025, he has allowed 16 goals. The Rapids (6-7-4, 22 points) are in ninth place in the MLS Western Conference heading into their game Saturday at home against Orlando, S.C. --Field Level Media

Colorado, USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen has knee surgery, out 4-to-6 weeks

Colorado Rapids and United States Men's National Team goalkeeper Zack Steffen had surgery on his right knee on Tuesday, and the Rapids said he is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six weeks. Steffen was injured during training with the USMNT in Chicago on Wednesday, causing him to miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Rapids said the operation was on his right medial meniscus. Steffen lost an opportunity to perhaps regain the U.S. starting spot. The 30-year-old started six of 14 World Cup qualifiers ahead of the 2022 tournament, including the last three, then was left off the World Cup roster by then-coach Gregg Berhalter. Steffen played his first national team match in nearly three years in a January friendly against Costa Rica and coach Mauricio Pochettino said last month that Matt Turner, the starter since 2022, was not assured of being his No. 1 choice for the Gold Cup. Turner didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. This is the second injury to a goalkeeper on the USMNT in recent weeks, with the first 24-year-old Patrick Schulte. The keeper for MLS' Columbus Crew strained his oblique on May 24. Matt Freese, 26, made his national debut in goal during Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey, while 21-year-old Chris Brady rounds out the remaining goalkeepers on the roster.
