Giants send a message, pick up manager Bob Melvin's option for 2026
PHOENIX — Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey could have chosen several methods to address one of his team's toughest stretches of the season. Firing a coach on manager Bob Melvin's staff would've been one way to go. Instead, Posey did the opposite on Tuesday. The Giants announced that they have exercised Melvin's option for the 2026 season, removing any doubt about the alignment between Posey's front office and the veteran manager that he inherited. Advertisement 'Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we're really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball,' Posey said in a news release announcing the move. 'His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he's the right person to continue guiding this team forward.' The timing of the announcement sent a clear message to the clubhouse as well as fans clamoring for a change on the coaching staff. Melvin, 63, received a vote of confidence while the Giants are in the throes of their most disappointing stretch of the season. They've lost 12 of their last 17 games, including series losses to below .500 teams like the Miami Marlins and Chicago White Sox, and have fallen from a tie atop the NL West on June 13 to an eight-game deficit to the Los Angeles Dodgers. An inconsistent offense has been at the core of the team's issues but the grumbling has grown louder from some corners of the fan base about Melvin's bullpen decisions and outs on the basepaths, including a handful on the last homestand that came on aggressive sends by third base coach Matt Williams. But Posey demonstrated spreme confidence in the current team when he engineered the trade for Rafael Devers, taking on eight-plus years and more than $250 million to a professional run producer who is mostly limited to designated hitter. The Giants have gone in the wrong direction since that trade, but if Posey felt the group needed a shakeup, he is using an affirmational carrot instead of the stick. Melvin, a Bay Area native and former Giants player, is in his 22nd season as a major-league skipper and is a three-time Manager of the Year Award winner (2007 with Arizona and in 2012 and '18 with the Oakland A's). He is in his second season with the Giants after former president Farhan Zaidi hired him away from a turbulent situation with the San Diego Padres. Although his hiring was announced in October 2023 as a three-year agreement, only the first two seasons were guaranteed. Advertisement Now there's no question that Melvin is operating from a place of authority. 'I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group,' Melvin said in the news release. 'I believe in what we're building here, and I appreciate the confidence that the Giants ownership group … and the rest of the Giants' organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year, and I'm looking forward to the work ahead.'

Active CISCE— A holistic initiative to review students' fitness
With a view to promoting holistic development of students in alignment with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) on Tuesday announced the launch of 'Active CISCE', an initiative that emphasises importance of physical activity in a child's overall well-being. Each registered student will receive an online CISCE physical health and fitness assessment report card. (For Representation) 'Through this initiative, the Council seeks to transform school campuses into vibrant centres for fitness and sports, encouraging students to lead healthier, more balanced lives while supporting their academic growth. The programme aims to integrate physical fitness and sports assessment for every student in CISCE-affiliated schools, with objectives to assess physical fitness parameters of every student, nurture and develop sporting skills,' said Joseph Emmanuel, the council's chief executive and secretary on Tuesday. 'Other objectives are: To make physical fitness activities a routine part of students' lives, promote happiness, health, and positivity among students. Provide vertical mobility in sports to talented students through CISCE sports competitions, mandate curriculum-integrated physical activities and assessments to promote not just physical health but also socio-emotional and cognitive growth for all school students,' he added. As part of the initiative, schools will be required to ensure that all students from Classes I to 12 are registered on the CISCE physical health and fitness assessment web portal which will be launched on July 15. The portal will feature grade and age-specific test modules, video tutorials for assessment and self-assessment, video tutorials to improve fitness and real-time synchronisation with school dashboards, according to a circular issued by the council. Each registered student will receive an online CISCE physical health and fitness assessment report card. This comprehensive report will include a baseline fitness score, progress tracking across academic years, lifestyle indicators, sports skill badges, health and lifestyle inputs (diets, screen time, and sleep) and will also allow for early talent identification,' he said. The CISCE will conduct training programmes (both offline and online) for physical education and sports teachers to ensure they are well-equipped to implement the initiative. Schools will be provided with a downloadable Excel template that will allow them to upload data easily. Physical education teachers will upload each student's physical fitness and activity data based on continuous observations and participation throughout the academic year. To support the implementation of the initiative, a nominal annual fee of ₹100 per student will be introduced, payable through the CAREERS portal by the school at the time of student registration. 'Schools are requested to complete the registration process for all students by September 30, 2025. As open spaces become increasingly scarce, schools serve as essential and secure environments where children can engage in physical activity,' Emmanuel said. Since CISCE is following data integration, the registration of students in Classes IX and XI and the 'Confirmation Of Entries' for the ICSE and ISC examinations will be accepted by the system only after successful registration and data submission for all students from Classes I to X (for schools with only ICSE) and Classes I to XII (for schools up to ISC) for the CISCE physical health and sports assessment. 'The detailed class wise curriculum/guidelines along with the user manual will be sent to all CISCE schools in due course. We believe that 'Active CISCE' will be instrumental in developing well-rounded individuals who excel academically and in physical fitness,' he added.

Jawaharlal Nehru University faculty slams delays in admissions, PhD process
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) has raised serious concerns over the upcoming semester's academic schedule at JNU, describing it as "messy and illogical." The teachers' body highlighted multiple administrative lapses, focusing particularly on irregularities in the admission timelines, especially for PhD include improper use of NET percentile scores, which JNUTA claims distort the final merit assert that "combining percentile scores from the NET exam with raw viva-voce marks defies basic statistical logic," rendering written exam marks essentially DELAYS AND ACADEMIC IMPACT According to JNUTA, the irregular scheduling would see continuing students beginning classes on 9 July, while first-year students may not complete admissions until late July, with PhD admissions extending into association criticised the exclusion of June 2025 NET candidates from the PhD process, despite many having recently completed their master's degrees. This exclusion exacerbates uncertainty about semester alignment and course durations. JNUTA also accuses the administration of bypassing faculty input on reverting to the university's entrance INDIFFERENCEFurther allegations by JNUTA include misuse of the APAR (Annual Performance Assessment Report) mechanism to over-regulate faculty and unresolved promotion teachers' body expressed dissatisfaction with the administration's inaction, noting that "The VC's avoidance of a scheduled meeting with the JNUTA, despite an earlier commitment, shows the administration's indifference." Pūhoi To Warkworth Motorway Going To 110km/h
Minister of Transport A new 110km/h speed limit on the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway will come into effect first thing tomorrow morning, Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced today. 'Transport is a critical enabler for economic growth and productivity, and with over 20,000 vehicles travelling this motorway every day, the new higher speed will help ensure people and freight can get to where they need to go, quickly and safely,' Mr Bishop says. 'Late last year, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) publicly consulted on increasing the speed limit from north of the Pūhoi interchange viaduct to south of the Warkworth roundabout to 110km/h. More than 7,900 submissions were received across Northland and Auckland. Responses were overwhelmingly positive, with 94% in support of the increasing the speed limit and 91% strongly in favour. 'The Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway has been designed and constructed with safety features that greatly reduce the risk of death and serious injury in a crash such as two lanes in each direction providing safe passing opportunities, flexible median barrier separation between opposing lanes, and a mostly straight, wide alignment. Since opening in 2023, no one has died in a crash. 'Kiwis have had their say and NZTA has completed all required technical assessments, with the motorway being assessed as safe to increase the speed limit to 110km/h. Now, we're getting on and delivering it. 'Police will apply the same enforcement to 110km/h roads as any other part of the road network. Drivers can expect to see police patrols on New Zealand roads anywhere, at any time. Drivers should continue to drive to the conditions, free from impairment and distraction, and make sure everyone's wearing their seatbelt. 'The Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway has vastly improved the safety, connectivity, and resilience of the network between Auckland and Northland, and has opened access to popular destinations between the two regions. As a critical route for road users, freight, and tourists, I look forward to the new 110km/h speed limit coming into effect from tomorrow.' The new 110km/h speed limit on the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway comes into effect on Tuesday 1 July 2025 and will apply from 2.5km north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnels, to south of Warkworth roundabout. Notes: The public consultation for increasing the speed limit to 110km/h on the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway took place from 3 September to 1 October 2024. 7,911 submissions were received from across Northland and Auckland, including 158 submissions from businesses or organisations. The speed limit on SH1 through the Johnstones Hill Tunnels will remain 80km/h. While the SH1 Johnstones Hill Tunnels are built to high safety standards, the enclosed environment within a tunnel creates a different safety risk to that of the surrounding motorway. There are no current plans to review or change the speed limit for this section. There is a transition zone where the speed limit will be kept at 100km/h for a short length (2.5km) north of the Johnstones Hill Tunnel over two viaducts. This section is an area of weaving movements, where traffic is diverging and merging, exiting and egressing on short, narrow on and off ramps, with narrow lines of sight over the viaducts, and does not meet safety criteria for an increased speed.
