Basil Zempilas 10 Things: Budget estimates show that some ministers are making guesstimates
1. It's called estimates, but after having sat through it front and centre this week, I reckon for some ministers it's more like guesstimates. Budget estimates is the brief political window which opens for three days every year in State Parliament following the Budget. Members of the Opposition have the opportunity to quiz ministers and senior public servants on the government's spending. With just a day to run, it's very clear which ministers know their stuff, and which ones have skimmed the briefing notes in the car on the way to work. 2. The other great curiosity of Estimates is which minister is responsible for answering which questions. Sometimes they don't even know. Like on Tuesday when I tried to ask about Roger's rugby team and was told by Tourism Minister Reece Whitby I'd need to ask Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti, who later in the day told me I'd need to ask the Tourism Minister. Yes minister. 3. The Deputy Premier was more forthcoming on questions about the racetrack at Burswood Park. I suppose when everyone calls it Rita's racetrack, it's hard not to own it. We learned the $217.5 million dollars the State Government has told everyone the racetrack will cost is only an estimate based on a draft assessment, not the final cost. The other revelation: no land needs to be acquired from neighbouring Crown Resorts to complete the racetrack. 4. That last point is particularly interesting, because it's not what community members were told at recent Optus Stadium consultation sessions. 5. Estimates also helped us better understand that the solar batteries households are signing up for under the $5000 State-Federal rebate scheme will actually be used to keep the lights on — for everyone. Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson confirmed the power you store in your solar battery will be accessible by the Government to put back into the grid 30 times per year to help make up any peak demand shortfalls. 6. Here's something else I learned: to make the expansion of the ferry service possible east of the Causeway, the bridge may need to have some of its under carriage scraped away so the boats can fit underneath. 7. Remember the debt monster of 2017? It feels like he's warming up for a grand return. 8. My guess is most parents think two weeks of school holidays in the middle of the year is more than enough. 9. It's a footy moment most West Australians will never forget. Dom Sheed's match winner in the 2018 grand final was as good as it gets. Congrats Dom, enjoy the next chapter. 10. Huge congratulations to my old teammate Paul Sanzone on steering West Perth to a win in his first game as senior coach. The circumstances of him taking over may not have been ideal, but what a way to get the club back on track.

Chris Pratt pays tribute to Jonathan Joss after Parks and Rec actor shot dead
Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt paid tribute to Jonathan Joss. The actor was shot dead after getting into a heated argument with a neighbour Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt paid tribute to fellow co-star Jonathan Joss after he was shot dead by a neighbour. The San Antonio Police Department in Texas as well as onlookers claimed the 59-year-old King of the Hill actor got into a heated row with a neighbour on the city's south side over the weekend before he was shot. Law enforcement told TMZ that the neighbour pulled out a gun during the argument and shot Joss several times before fleeing in a car, with the police arresting him a block away from the residence. A man called Sigfredo Alvarez-Cega was arrested and charged with murder for the horrific shooting. Authorities released a statement at the time and wrote: "Officers were dispatched to the location for a Shooting in Progress. Once the officers arrived at the location, the victim was found near the roadway of the location. The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. "EMS pronounced the victim deceased. Officers located the suspect who shot the victim and detained him. The suspect was transported to Headquarters for further investigation and then booked for murder. The investigation is still ongoing. Following the news of his death, Parks and Rec star Chris took to his Instagram Stories to share a screengrab of the heartbreaking news. "Damn. RIP Jonathan. Always such a kind dude. He played Ken Hotate in Parks and was also in Mag 7. Said to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones," he captioned the post. Fans also paid tribute to the actor, with one writing on social media: "This is absolutely devastating news. Jonathan Joss was such a talented actor, and his iconic roles brought so much joy to so many. What a tragic loss." Another devastated fan commented: "It absolutely shatters my heart to learn of the passing of Jonathan Joss, known and loved by many fans as the voice, heart, spirit, and soul of the character John Redcorn. "He made a point to be involved in the fandom, and was so kind to all of us. He will never be forgotten!" Joss' husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, released a statement on the actor's official Facebook page claiming the argument began when the couple were checking the mail "at the site of our former home". "When the man fired, Jonathan pushed me out of the way," he said. "He saved my life. Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. "We picked Valentine's Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future," Gonzales posted before adding he was with Joss when he passed and 'told him how much he was loved.'

'King Of The Hill' Voice Actor Jonathan Joss Killed In Hate Crime Shooting
Pride Month is a time for the LGBTQ+ community to have a chance to express themselves openly, without fear, supported by allies who affirm their right to live authentically. It's a time of celebration—of being alive, proud, and unapologetically oneself. Jonathan Joss was a member of that community and had planned to spend the month with his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. However, on 1st June (Sunday), just as Pride began, a shooting took Jonathan's life. In a statement posted on Facebook, Tristan said the voice actor was shot dead by a neighbour who had been threatening him for years. The incident took place in front of the couple's former home, which was burned down due to another alleged hate crime. Tristan explained that their former neighbour, believed to be Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, approached them, shouting homophobic slurs before raising his gun and firing at the couple. The shot ended the actor's life at the age of 59 years old. Tristan also claimed that the couple had received many death threats in the past due to their relationship. While they've reported these threats to the authorities, nothing has been done to protect the couple. Fans of the voice artist are mourning Jonathan's death and are angry over media outlets framing the incident as just an argument gone wrong. On social media, people are speaking out, saying, 'This hate crime is why Pride Month exists in the first place.' Others share frustration towards the police, pointing to the star's husband's statement. They argued that the tragedy was preventable. The Native American actor was best known for his work in 'King of the Hill' as John Redcorn and his acting role in 'Parks and Recreation'. His performances brought humour, depth, and authenticity to Native animated and live-action TV roles. He also performed with The Red Corn Band, blending music and cultural storytelling. The artist was admired for his talent, warmth, and dedication to improving the representation of Indigenous people in media. Jonathan was known to be a man who was proud of his roots and spread warmth and kindness to anyone he met. His legacy will live on through his husband and the people who supported him over the years. We extend our condolences to the cherished actor's family and know he will forever be remembered.
