Video shows black bear brawl in Asheville: Here's what to know during bear mating season
USA TODAY published a video of two bears fighting on an Asheville roadside. Here's what to know about the area's bear population. The bears featured in the short USA TODAY clip caused a dramatic scene with their scuffle. While the majority of Western North Carolina may not have witnessed a bear brawl, most residents are far from strangers to the black bear population. In fact, many of the animals aren't particularly shy, perfectly comfortable rifling through trash cans or even taking casual strolls through downtown Asheville. With the warmest months of the year upon us, bears are growing particularly bold in many areas, ready to roam and explore in search of food. Here's what to know about black bears in WNC, including common misconceptions, safety rules and more. NC Wildlife Commission BearWise coordinator Ashley Hobbs said in a 2024 news release that, while black bears are not generally dangerous and are rarely aggressive toward humans, people sharing territory with the animals should do their part to reduce the potential for conflict. Black bear safety program BearWise recommendations include: Never feed or approach bears. Secure food, garbage and recycling. Remove bird feeders when bears are active. Never leave pet food outdoors. Clean and store grills and smokers. Alert neighbors to bear activity. If you encounter a black bear, the National Park Service suggests: Remain watchful. Do not approach it. Do not allow the bear to approach you. If the bear is at a distance, feeding, or walking by and notices you but continues its natural behavior, no action is needed on your part. Proceed while continuing to observe the bear. If your presence causes the bear to change its behavior (stops feeding, changes its travel direction, watches you, etc.), you are too close. Being too close may promote aggressive behavior from the bear such as running toward you, making loud noises, or swatting the ground. The bear is demanding more space. Don't run, but slowly back away, watching the bear. Increase the distance between you and the bear. The bear will probably do the same. The NPS says that black bears are most active during early morning and late evening hours in spring and summer, with mating usually taking place in July. According to BearWise, the record weight for a black bear is over 800 pounds. Male black bears generally weigh between 130 and 500 pounds, while females are smaller at around 90 to 350 pounds. Another bear sighting reported in the region; Officials share where it may be going
Ohio wildlife officials say bear sightings are increasing in the Miami Valley. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Over a week, News Center 7 has received reports of sightings in Clark, Montgomery, Champaign, and Greene counties. TRENDING STORIES: 27-year-old woman dead after trying to pass 2 semis, causing crash in Darke County Local roadway closed for emergency repairs after flash flooding 23-year-old killed in shooting at Springfield party; Police seeking community help in investigation As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division Manager Brett Beatty explains why we're seeing an increase. 'We've seen a pretty steady increase of black bears in the state. I think my last numbers that have been all documented was from 2022, where we had about 280 sightings,' Beatty says. There is a reason why more black bear sightings are being reported now compared to two decades ago. 'The technology, everybody having a phone in their pocket and the ring cameras,' Beatty says. 'So without those ring cameras, that bear probably would have passed right through there, and folks wouldn't have known he was there.' He says he's tracked this bear across multiple counties in the region. The bear was most recently spotted in Greene County Sunday evening. 'He's traveling, looking for other bears, good territory, and heading in the direction he was, he wasn't running into anybody else as far as bears. Right. So it makes sense for him to kind of backtrack and head back from where he started,' Beatty says. Bears can travel up to 40 miles a day and are likely looking for a mate or a new place to call home over the summer, Beaty added. News Center 7 will continue to follow this story. ‘It was amazing': Residents baffled by bear brawl on Metro Vancouver street
Matthew Chow was among those who witnessed and took video of a brawl between two black bears on a Burnaby, B.C. street on June 21, 2025. Two black bears stunned residents in Burnaby, B.C., over the weekend, when they engaged in a fierce drawn-out brawl that was captured on camera. The dramatic encounter unfolded Saturday afternoon on Beaverbrook Crescent, where residents watched from the safety of their cars as the two bears wrestled, growled and snapped at each other in the middle of the road. 'It was pretty amazing,' said Anne Ng, who witnessed the fight. Her son Matthew Chow, was among those who recorded the confrontation from inside a vehicle. 'The two bears were fighting each other, and it got intense at some points. they were ripping each other's fur out,' he said. 'I don't think I'll ever see that again.' The bears appeared completely unconcerned by the growing number of vehicles stopping to watch, staying laser-focused on one another as they exchanged blows. No one approached or honked, giving the animals space to let the confrontation run its course. 'Some cars backed away, and some just turned around and left,' said Ng. While black bear fights aren't unheard of, they rarely play-out in front of humans. They are often disputes over territory, dominance, or mating rights. The incident which lasted about an hour has been reported to B.C. Conservation Officer Service, and residents were told that two large bears were spotted in the neighbourhood. 'I go for walks every day by this area, by the creek,' said resident Al Suleman. 'I think it's going to scare me now for a while.' Witnesses told CTV News that the clash subsided eventually, and the bears wandered back into the woods.

Trail cam in New York captures two bear cubs copying classic children's playground game in adorable scene
New trail camera footage from upstate New York shows two black bear cubs caught on video playing what looks suspiciously like a classic childhood game - tag. The adorable scene, recorded in a wooded area, shows one cub chasing the other through the trees before they tumble into a playful wrestling match. But while the behavior may seem like innocent fun, wildlife experts say it's actually a vital part of the young bears' development. In a Facebook post, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) revealed there's more to all that rough-and-tumble than meets the eye, saying the cubs' woodland wrestling matches 'provide many benefits to a young bear's development'. According to the agency, all that climbing and sprinting helps cubs learn how to dodge danger and stay one step ahead of predators. Wrestling serves as basic training for fighting off threats and capturing prey. Endless romping strengthens their lungs and hearts so they're ready to roam long distances in search of food, a mate, or a den to hunker down in for winter. Even memory, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills get a boost from all the action. They may grow into hulking, 300-pound adults, but in their early months, black bear cubs spend less time lounging and more time getting wild in the woods. Cubs usually stay with their mothers for up to 17 months before venturing out on their own. The NYSDEC also included a reminder for the public: 'Although black bear cubs can be playful, it's important to remember to Be BearWise and never feed or approach bears. 'Adult female bears will defend their cubs from any perceived threat, including people who get too close. Enjoy and observe bears from a distance.' The camera that caught the clip is one of many placed across New York to monitor the state's growing black bear population, which has become increasingly visible in both rural and suburban areas. This sighting comes after an enormous grizzly bear has been captured on camera prowling through the snow near a tourist hotspot in Montana - marking the year's first sighting as the predators emerge from hibernation. The eerie footage, recorded in March evening near the town of West Yellowstone, shows the apex predator plodding through a snowstorm, moving slowly as it approaches the camera set up on the ground.

Annual Black Bear Festival returns to Plymouth
PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WNCT) — One of the larger festivals in Eastern N.C. is back in Plymouth. The National Black Bear Festival is underway this weekend. The highest density area for black bears in the nation is the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula which Plymouth is in the middle of. The annual festival kicked off Friday, June 6, 2025. 'It's the best. Everyone walks by, everybody speaks,' Shedrick Moore with Mo's Turkey Legs said. 'Everybody's having a good time. It's just, it's a great time every time we come out.' The weekend is a big one for local businesses too as thousands of people come to the small town. 'I love seeing everybody come from all over North Carolina to come support our small businesses,' Shelby Craddock of Sassy Sisters Boutique said. 'I'm with Sassy Sisters Boutique and we'll be here all day tomorrow.' Some vendors said they're confident their food is going to be a fan favorite at this year's festival. 'When they come get my food, then they'll know that the colonel's not the only one that fixes food that is finger-licking good,' Owner/Operator of Springers Backyard Grill and Catering Jerry Spencer said. 'If you didn't get it from Springers, you didn't get no good food. So, when you come down to the festival, you look for me right across from the police station. Just sniff and smell to bring you right to this place.' The festival runs all day Saturday, beginning with the Run With the Bears 5K. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
