LBC host James O'Brien issues on-air apology after reading out antisemitic message about Jewish children - sparking raft of complaints to Ofcom
An LBC radio presenter has apologised for reading out a listener's message claiming Jewish children in Britain are taught to view Arabs as 'cockroaches to be crushed'. James O'Brien sparked fury for reading the antisemitic comments without challenging them while discussing the conflict in Gaza during yesterday's programme. The 53-year-old host was allegedly sent the message from someone called Chris in Oxford who said his wife had been taught at a 'Shabbat school' in Hertfordshire. The listener claimed she was also told 'one Jewish life is worth thousands of Arab lives'. Mr O'Brien read out the message before a shortened version was shared by LBC on social media, then deleted after a furious backlash from Jewish organisations. The Campaign Against Antisemitism said it was a 'modern blood libel on national radio', and communications regulator Ofcom has received a number of complaints. When reading out the message yesterday, Mr O'Brien said: 'I'm fascinated by objectivity, which is why I'm going to read out this from Chris, because you do find yourself wondering how people can be looking at the same world you're looking at and arriving at such completely different conclusions. 'The polling we looked at in Ha'aretz, displaying support not just for ethnic cleansing, but also for genocide, on levels that many of us would find terrifying. 'And of course it's not confined, as Chris writes from Oxford – "I'm loving the show" – thank you, Chris – "and the high quality of callers today, but I do think it's worth saying that these warped views are not just an Israeli problem. '"My wife was brought up Jewish and at Shabbat school in a leafy Hertfordshire town she was taught that one Jewish life is worth thousands of Arab lives, and that Arabs are cockroaches to be crushed. And the Jewish News pointed out that 'while there is certainly a concept of 'Sunday school', or 'cheder', for Jewish children, there is no such thing as 'Shabbat school'.' The broadcast has also allegedly been reported to the Metropolitan Police - with one complaint claiming the programme spread 'lies about Jews', according to The Telegraph. Ofcom confirmed to MailOnline that it had received complaints about the content, which were now being assessed. While Mr O'Brien presented his show as normal today, he addressed the controversy at 11.48am, which was the same time he read out the message yesterday. He said: 'This is very important. 'The suggestion that one "side" of this conflict is the genocidal monsters of Hamas who slaughtered 1,200 people and took some 250 hostage, and the other "side" is the Jewish community in Hertfordshire, is not only a baseless fiction and totally repugnant but to broadcast it is unbelievably reckless. 'It is practically an invitation to disaffected people to target Jews in the UK – why not, if they are a 'side' in this conflict? 'It is deplorable the depths that some talk show hosts will sink to inflame their listeners and drive up ratings. The consequences are borne by British Jews. We are formally complaining to Ofcom. An Ofcom spokeswoman told MailOnline today: 'We are assessing the complaints against our rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.' Last year, he circulated a video of a Muslim man in a balaclava apparently preparing to throw a brick at a church - who then pulls off the balaclava and says he won't conform to far-right stereotypes of Muslims. However, the activist goes on to claim that far-right groups have 'Zionist backers' - referencing those who believe in the idea of a Jewish state. He made the universally recognised symbol for 'money' by rubbing his fingers together as he said the term - seemingly referencing antisemitic tropes that Jewish people have huge sums of money and seek to control the world. Mr O'Brien later admitted that he had not watched the clip to the end and subsequently apologised. 'I referenced this clip on the show today while watching it live in the studio. I didn't watch it to the end. Obviously, the reference to 'Zionist backers' is obnoxious & anti-semitic. My apologies,' he wrote on X.

Israel's US ambassador called home over interview remarks
JERUSALEM: Israel's ambassador to Washington is being summoned home on the instructions of a government disciplinary body to discuss comments he made in a podcast interview, the foreign ministry said Sunday. Ambassador Yechiel Leiter had made an appearance on a podcast run by the right-wing US online media platform PragerU, in which he accused opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of levelling 'blood libels' at the Israeli leader. 'The Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Eden Bar-Tal, will summon the ambassador in Washington, Dr. Yechiel Leiter, for a hearing regarding statements he made during a media interview,' a ministry spokesman said in a statement. The spokesman said the summons was 'in accordance with the instructions of the Discipline Department at the Civil Service Commission.' Although the role of Israeli ambassador to the United States is a political appointment and Leiter was selected by Netanyahu, Israeli diplomats are typically expected to refrain from making political statements. In the interview with PragerU, Leiter accused 'extremists on the left' and the Israeli media of trying to topple Netanyahu's government. 'It's the extremists, and there is nothing they won't do to bring Netanyahu down, and it's a calumny that needs to be called out,' he said, accusing Netanyahu's detractors of levelling 'blood libels against your own PM.' Leiter also dismissed as 'insanity' claims that the premier was prolonging the war in Gaza to remain in power, adding: 'How dare they say something as malicious as that?' A poll published by Israel's Channel 12 News on Saturday showed that 55 percent of the public believes Netanyahu is more interested in remaining in power than ending the war or freeing the hostages still held in Gaza. A former adviser to Netanyahu, Leiter is originally from the United States and lived in a settlement in the occupied West Bank. His son, Moshe Leiter, was killed in combat in November 2023 in the Gaza Strip.

The final post on X made by Yarón Lischinsky, the 28-year-old Israeli diplomat who was gunned down with his girlfriend in Washington DC on Wednesday night, drew attention to a 'blood libel'. 'All UN organisations have obligations to be neutral and impartial,' the post said. 'Your reports are founded on lies and on Hamas numbers.' The smear that so appalled him was the lurid claim that 14,000 babies in Gaza would die within 48 hours. Tom Fletcher, the UN humanitarian chief, had made it the day before on Radio 4's Today programme. Social media lit up in excitement. People love tall stories of Jewish baby killers. Later that day, the smear was repeated in Parliament by no fewer than 13 enthusiastic MPs – seven from the Labour Party, three Liberal Democrats, the Green Party leader, a Plaid Cymru representative and a Gaza Independent – when they gathered to give Israel a kicking. This was the notorious debate in which David Lammy blustered that 'history will judge' the Jewish state for the outrage of defending its people against jihadism and refusing to give up before winning. Hamas had already applauded Lammy's 'principled stance'. Yet while parliamentarians were merrily repeating the obviously fishy '14,000 babies' claim, it was being debunked by the BBC. They questioned the UN about it, prompting frantic backpedalling. Initially, a spokesman said aid was needed 'ideally within the next 48 hours,' which felt rather less life-or-death than we had been led to believe. It then emerged that the claim was based upon a UN report saying that 14,000 children between the ages of four and six may suffer malnutrition by March 2026. No babies. No 48 hours. No acute malnutrition, in fact; that was merely a projection of what may happen if nothing changed for a year. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Downplaying the suffering in the war zone of Gaza would be an ugly thing. But it is equally important to deal with reality, not to filter everything through a tissue of Israelophobic lies. The awful truth is that civilians, including babies, lose their lives in warfare. According to the UN, the global average is nine non-combatant casualties for every combatant killed. When the RAF joined American airforce and Iraqi and Kurdish troops to obliterate Islamic State in Mosul in 2017, an Amnesty report described it as a 'civilian catastrophe'. In March, a UN report revealed that half of all children under five in Yemen, that's 540,000 boys and girls, are 'acutely malnourished', a condition described as 'agonising, life-threatening and entirely preventable,' by a humanitarian official. Did anybody care? Clearly, there's something about Jews and the blood of babies that gets people going. Ironically enough, Lischinsky and his girlfriend, Sarah Milgrim, 26, had just attended an event exploring practical solutions to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza when they were murdered. They were both wounded at first, then shot dead at point blank range. Milgrim, who had obtained a master's degree from the UN University of Peace and had spent her summers working for a Palestinian-Israeli peace initiative, was crawling away when the final bullet came. She will never learn that a few days before, her boyfriend had bought her an engagement ring. Did their alleged killer, a Gaza activist from Chicago by the name of Elias Rodriguez, believe that 14,000 Palestinian babies were dying when he pulled the trigger? We will never know. But we can fairly assume that such propaganda inflames anti-Semitism globally and places Jews in danger. By rights, these MPs should retract and apologise or lose the whip.
