Mayor hopes Cambridgeshire buses can be saved by cutting others
Two "key" bus routes at risk of being cut by an operator could be saved by stopping three lesser used services, said a Conservative East is due to stop its route nine bus service, which links Littleport to Ely and Cambridge, and the 31 route from Ramsey to Whittlesey. Passengers told the BBC cuts to the services would have a negative effect on people living in the alternative proposal from Paul Bristow, the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, suggested stopping the south Cambridgeshire Tiger On Demand public transport service and the bus routes number 15 and 8A. The proposal will be put forward to the combined authority on 22 July and was estimated to save about £531,000 a year, Bristow estimated cost of running the 31 and nine services, due to axed by Stagecoach, was £500, who asked not to include his surname, lives in Ramsey and has two sons who use the 31 bus to get to school in Whittlesey. He said: "It's a lifeline for us because when we are working we can't get them to school. "But it's not just my sons: it's for people looking to go to work, medical appointments and not just going into Whittlesey, but to Stanground or college - there's a lot of people involved." Rising costs Stagecoach East previously said cuts and changes to its services in the county were necessary "to keep the local bus network viable". It added the changes followed a £1m rise in National Insurance annually, which put the price of provision up for "services already struggling to cover their cost of operation".Bristow said he wanted to save services that connected major towns and cities such as Chatteris, Ely, Littleport and Ramsey with Cambridge and bus route 15 from Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire, to Royston, Hertfordshire, cost £50,668.61 to run in the year to April 2025 and it carried 281 passengers - which is £180 per passenger. The service 8A that runs between March and Cottenham had 1,969 passenger journeys in 2024-25, costing about £100.33 per Cambridgeshire Tiger on Demand service, which is part of the precept funded services, had 1,654 passenger journeys in the first three months of operation and cost about £180.11 per passenger."You have to make a decision at some point about how much you're willing to subsidise," Bristow said. "I don't think [services such as the 15] are justifiable especially when we could end up losing services like the 31 and the number nine. "I am going to put to my board that we divert that money spent on those services to saving the 31 and the nine where the subsidy required was lower. "The 31 between Cambridge and Fowlmere, was estimated to cost about £76.89 per passenger. Follow Cambridgeshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.

County's buses to get new routes and improvements
New bus routes will be launched and services improved following an allocation of funding. Suffolk County Council was awarded a total grant of £8m from the Department for Transport's Local Authority Bus Grant last month, with £2.8m allocated for this project. As well as new routes, some services will have increased frequency and a Sunday schedule added. The majority of services will start in late August or early September, but a new service to replace the axed Marham Park Flyer began on Monday. Councillor Chris Chambers, in charge of transport strategy at the council, said the news represented "the biggest positive change" to services since 1998. "We have been working extensively, over many months, with local providers and the community to find solutions for those affected by the cancellation of the Marham Park Flyer service," Chambers said. "The Local Authority Bus Grant for 2025/26, which the council received from the Department for Transport on 1 June, has enabled us to offer a replacement for this much-loved route. "To reduce the gap in services around Marham Park, we worked with the Traffic Commissioner to ensure a shorter notice period than usually required for the new route to begin and I am pleased that this new route has now started." A full list of new services or changes to current routes can be found on the council's website. The council also previously announced £5.2m of the Local Authority Bus Grant would go toward new and improved bus stops, bus stations, bus priority measures or vehicle upgrades. Jordan: Bus routes connecting Amman with Irbid, Jerash launched
AMMAN — Minister of Transport Wissam Tahtamouni on Tuesday inaugurated the Amman–Irbid and Amman–Jerash bus routes, as part of the transportation project between the capital and other governorates. The project, funded by government support totalling JD4.5 million, aims to enhance the integration and reliability across the Kingdom, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The project includes the operation of 39 buses on the Amman–Irbid route and 15 buses on the Amman–Jerash line. An additional nine buses are expected to join the Jerash route soon, bringing the total fleet serving the two routes to 63 modern buses. These vehicles are equipped with 'advanced' technologies designed to ensure passenger comfort and safety, including vehicle tracking systems, electronic fare collection, onboard surveillance cameras, and real-time passenger information systems. Tahtamouni said that this initiative is part of a broader national plan to modernise public transportation between the capital and the governorates. She described the project as a 'genuine' step towards establishing a smart and efficient public transport network that improves service delivery and facilitates citizens' mobility, all while maintaining technical, administrative and regulatory standards. The minister also noted that the pilot operations have shown promising results, with both routes currently serving around 3,000 passengers per day on weekdays. This number is expected to rise progressively to 7,000 daily passengers as service frequency and operational efficiency improve to meet growing demand for intercity transport. Tahtamouni announced that the trial operation of the Amman–Karak route also commenced on Tuesday, while the Amman–Salt line will begin its pilot phase later this month. Both are scheduled for official launch at the beginning of August, as part of the project's rollout. Tahtamouni reiterated the ministry's commitment to completing all phases of the project on schedule, in alignment with the transport needs of citizens nationwide. The project is being implemented by the Comprehensive Multiple Transportation Company, the official operator, under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Regulatory Commission. © Copyright The Jordan Times.
