A Case for Never Talking About Work With Non-Work Friends

My best mate and I met a decade or so ago, back when we both worked at a vintage store on Camden High Street. I liked her dark, incredibly quick sense of humor and she liked…well, you'd have to ask her. We very swiftly bonded—between tagging men's brogues and color-blocking old band T-shirts and being hungover—and have been firm friends ever since. Rarely a day goes by without one of us sending the other a no-context TikTok, or reminding the other of something deranged we did over the weekend. Despite this—despite our history and friendship and closeness—you will not catch us talking about work, ever. I'm not even entirely sure that we know what the other one does in the daytime. We both send emails, and we both have colleagues, but beyond that? Not a clue. And this isn't a one-sided thing, either. She knows what I do for a living, but she has no idea what it entails because we simply don't bring it up. We have other pressing matters to discuss, such as who's sleeping with whom, who we're rooting for on The Ultimatum: Queer Love, and who we think has broken up with their long-time partner based on the tone and frequency of their Instagram Stories. The above was never an intentional facet of our friendship—we didn't agree to not talk about work. It's more that when we get together, work just doesn't come up beyond a cursory mention. I've had five different jobs since we left that vintage store, and she's worked her way to the top at a well-known clothing brand, but that's all we need to know. I'd like to keep it that way: When you spend five days a week in an intense work zone, there needs to be some escapism and variety. It's important to be around someone who can't even envision you logging into Slack. Who can't even conceptualize the version of you that replies to emails with 'Regards.' In Sex and the City, the girls spoke about their dating lives over brunch, not the minutiae of what was said and done in the office. I've experienced the flip-side, of course, and I do think that there are certain merits to having friends who work within the same industry. Having a friend who knows what you're talking about in a work capacity can be helpful, and if you're experiencing career woes or roadblocks, it can be refreshing to hash them over with someone objective but also knowledgeable. Even so, I'm a big proponent of leaving work stuff at the work gates. We're all hurtling towards death, every second of each day; wouldn't you rather spend your evenings and weekends debating who's the fittest in the pub garden as opposed to what Janet from accounts said by the water cooler? I can also guarantee that your work life isn't as interesting to your mates as it is to you, so it's never a bad thing to minimize work chat.

Meet Odd Muse founder Aimee Smale: the 28-year-old ex-Asos buyer built a multimillion-dollar ‘affordable luxury' clothing brand from her bedroom, but is it really ‘slow fashion'?

Aimee Smale was only 22 years old when she launched her own clothing brand, Odd Muse, from the comfort of her bedroom amid the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Modelling her own designs and piggybacking off of TikTok's rapid growth at the time, Smale managed to use social media to market her 'affordable luxury' brand. The brand, known for its dedication to slow fashion, has gone viral more than once and even made a splash when debuting at London Fashion Week in 2023. Advertisement Today, Odd Muse is a multi-million dollar business with two stores in London's Covent Garden, and SoHo in New York City. The brand also has over 500,000 followers on TikTok and over 960,000 on Instagram at the time of writing. Here's everything you need to know about Aimee Smale. She was a fashion student Aimee Smale in a Bentley. Photo: @aimeesmalex/Instagram Raised in Essex, England, Smale is the first of her family to attend university, according to an interview with The Times in February. She mentioned that it was her father, who ran his own shop selling kitchen appliances, that inspired her to become an entrepreneur herself. 'I've got such fond memories of my father starting his business and taking things into his own hands,' she said. After Smale graduated from Ravensbourne University London in 2021 with a degree in fashion buying and brand management, she began working as a fashion buyer's assistant at Asos, the fast fashion retailer. She stayed in the position for a little over a year while saving money through designing logos for small businesses. Aimee Smale with a rack of Odd Muse clothing. I had no expectations other than it would be nice to match my wage,' Smale told Business Insider last year. Focusing on slow fashion

Inside Sandile Mahlangu's phenomenal style

Sandile Mahlangu isn't just acting the part, he's dressing it too. We caught up with the style-savvy star to unpack the fashion flair behind his standout looks. As the founder of the clothing brand SANDU, he is a huge risk taker when it comes to his style. 'It stems from my deeply seated belief that without risk there isn't a reward. I live that mantra from my widely published leap from working in the mines in the North West at the age of 19 to being a professional actor, model, public figure, clothing brand owner, farmer and now musician with my latest single Umhlaba released on all music platforms,' he tells TRUELOVE. His personal style is that of boldness as he uses it to express himself. 'It's relatively easy to maintain authenticity once you genuinely understand that clothes are an expression of who you are. I've developed authentic relationships with numerous stylists so that they understand the type of person that I am. This allows for conversation - where we both work on making sure that my personality shines through the pieces that I wear,' he shares. With his go-to fragrance being oud, we step behind the scenes of some of the looks we've adored from him: The clean gentleman A grey checkered double-breasted suit with no shirt underneath gives a sleek edge. The actor paired the look with dark shades and a confident pose. Vintage swagger A beige plaid suit with a matching cap. The accessories evoke the retro aesthetic. Street luxe Sporting an all-black combo and cargo jeans, this outfit blends laid back streetwear with designer flair. Summer sophistication A crisp open-collar white shirt tucked into tailored green trousers makes for a light, elegant look perfect for sunny outdoor events. Summer vibe Bold and breezy A dusty pink blazer paired with salmon trousers and white sneakers shows off a fearless approach to color, ideal for upscale garden parties. Anmako Launches New Collection on 14 June 2025

SINGAPORE - Media OutReach Newswire - 10 June 2025 - Anmako, a contemporary clothing brand known for its refined blend of functionality, elegance, and textile craftsmanship, will launch its new women's collection, Anmako Glow, on 14 June 2025 at its flagship store in Takashimaya Shopping Centre, Level 3, 391 Orchard Road, Singapore 238892. Opened in May 2025, the Takashimaya store now serves as Anmako's primary retail outlet in Singapore, complementing its existing space at Design Orchard. The location strengthens the brand's local presence and provides greater access to its collections for both residents and international visitors. Strategic Retail Expansion to Enhance Market Visibility The decision to establish a permanent outlet at Takashimaya follows several years of recurring seasonal pop-ups at the same venue, which helped build a loyal customer base. Situated along Orchard Road with direct MRT access and a range of amenities, the location offers high visibility and supports both physical retail and online growth. This expansion is part of Anmako's broader strategy to deepen engagement with its growing customer base by securing a presence in Singapore's most prominent commercial districts. Improved Accessibility and Customer Experience With its central location, the Takashimaya store offers convenient underground access to Orchard MRT, ample parking, and close proximity to dining, personal care, and retail services. These features are expected to enhance the overall shopping experience, and support continued growth across all sales channels. 'The opening of our store at Takashimaya marks an important milestone in our growth in Singapore,' said Eiko Sumantri, Director of Anmako. 'We are looking forward to introducing Anmako Glow to both our loyal customers and new audiences at this location.' Launch of 'Anmako Glow' at the Flagship Store Anmako Glow, designed for young professionals and families, will make its in-store debut on 14 June 2025. The collection extends the brand's commitment to clean silhouettes, functional tailoring, and wearable comfort suited for everyday life. While batik techniques feature in select textiles, Anmako's designs are developed entirely in-house and reflect the brand's own creative direction. Rather than drawing from external cultural styles, the brand incorporates batik fabric through its own design lens, resulting in garments that are distinct from conventional batik prints. This approach preserves traditional craftsmanship while offering a style unique to Anmako within the context of batik clothing in Singapore.
