Gordie Howe International Bridge reaches major milestone as crews disassemble tower cranes
The Brief The Gordie Howe Bridge Project is nearing completion with an expected opening later this year. Crews reached a major milestone as they wind down construction, removing the massive tower cranes that helped build the spires. More work is underway, but much of the work is in the rearview mirror. (FOX 2) - One of the biggest projects in Detroit history is nearing an end with the finish line on the new Gordie Howe International Bridge in sight. The cranes that helped build the spires that anchor the massive cables that support the half-mile crossing have finally come down. Big picture view Almost a year since the U.S. and Canadian construction teams connected the bridge deck, meeting over the center of the Detroit River, crews are starting to wind down work on the new border crossing. Each side of the bridge was constructed with the help of a tower crane - one colored red on the Canadian side and the other colored blue on the U.S. side. Going up in 2020, they were finally taken down this year with the help of another crane. The Canadian side was deconstructed in May while the U.S. side was taken down in July, according to a newsletter from the group overseeing its construction. Work is expected to be done later this year with travel beginning in fall 2025. Constructing a bridge of this size requires thinking on a larger scale. Both cranes reached a final height of 797 feet by the time each bridge tower was complete. When they first went up, it took three days to assemble their base, climbing up as construction on the towers went on. They were disassembled in the opposite way, beginning at the top and lowered with the help of crawler cranes, according to a fact sheet. Dig deeper While the structure is nearing completion, there is still more work to do. When the bridge opens, it will serve as more than just a route over the border. It will provide paths for other forms of transportation like bikes. The pavement will also have special lighting and signage. Fire suppression, electrical, and drainage systems also need to be installed. The Source Photos and news releases from the Gordie Howe International Bridge project were used for this report.

Winnipeg drivers facing frustration as construction season gets underway
CTV's Jeff Keele has the latest on Winnipeg's construction season and what drivers can expect on the road. June is still a few days away, but barricades and frustrated drivers are already lining Winnipeg streets with road construction season well underway. The City of Winnipeg says the repairs are necessary and crews need to get as much done as possible while the weather is good. 'We have a short window in our climate to get at it and to get it done and so we're trying to get going as early as we can,' said Michelle Stainton, a project management engineer with the city. In the 2025 budget, the city earmarked $169 million for roads. The plan is to do around 150 lane kilometres -- sixty of those are regional and major streets, the rest are local. The city says the work needs to be done to keep up with repairs and maintain roads. 'We're trying to get into a lot of places, so it is a lot more than if we throw all our money at reconstruction and we would never catch up and it would cost a whole lot more,' Stainton said. However, many drivers don't want to hear it, saying they are dealing with brutal conditions and long travel times. The city says it knows navigating through the lane closures is frustrating, but it reminds drivers to keep their cool and remember the people on the roadside 'This is their workplace and the people who are actually out there working are not the decision makers that got you into the place that you are,' Stainton said. The city says it notifies businesses about upcoming construction and attempts to work with them on the timing of the projects. As for commuters, it recommends planning trips using maps and apps to help you avoid the bottlenecks.

Two workers die after being found unconscious in stairwell of Manhattan building
Two men died after being found unconscious in the stairwell of a building in Manhattan's Little Italy where they were doing work, cops said. One of the victims, a 34-year-old man, died at the scene inside the stairwell on Mulberry St. near Hester St. about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, cops said. Medics rushed the second man to New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital but he could not be saved. Relatives told ABC 7 New York the men were part of a work crew painting one of the apartments in the building and that their boss called the crew down for lunch but the men never responded. 'She go upstairs, she check him, but she find him on the floor,' Maria Juarez, the girlfriend of one the two men, told ABC 7. Cops have not released the men's names. The city medical examiner's office will conduct autopsies to determine how both men died.
