Fans call out SBW over sad post-fight act as Paul Gallen dragged into 'bizarre' scenes
Paul Gallen has won a controversial split-decision victory over Sonny Bill Williams in their boxing match and while the pair seem ready to put aside their bad blood it didn't stop the former All Blacks star leaving the ring before being interviewed. Gallen and former rugby union and league player Williams finally settled their differences in the ring on Wednesday with the duo taking part in a scrappy bout in front of thousands of fans. Williams started the stronger of the two having showcased his reach and superior jab to rough up Gallen's face. However, despite only being two minute rounds, Gallen took advantage of a fatiguing Williams who got a point deducted in the seventh round for repeatedly holding the former Sharks captain in the clinch. The fight turned into a scrappy bout as Williams clinched and his point deduction ultimately cost him with two judges scoring it 77-74 and 76-75 in favour of Gallen. While a third had New Zealander Williams winning 77-74. And the controversy started as soon as the cards were read out. Williams was clearly fuming with the decision and stormed out of the ring. While many agreed with the New Zealander that he won, his decision to leave came as a big disappointment for many in attendance and watching at home considering they would have liked to see him speak. Fans paid plenty of money to attend the event at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena, but Williams' swift exit without an interview in the ring left fans wanting more. He also declined to attend the post-fight media conference. Fans felt it wasn't a good look after all the bad blood that had clouded the bout, which should have happened years ago when both fighters were closer to their prime. The bout drew plenty of criticism with Williams' tactics being questioned with plenty of clinching making for an ugly spectacle. While others felt Williams should have remained in the ring after the defeat. SBW's constant clinching was bizarre. He could've won the fight without it. Bro was straight up hitting double under hooks like it was an MMA fight at times. Probably lucky not to have another point deducted tbh. #SBWvGallen — Jordan Patu (@Jordan_Patu) July 16, 2025 SBW leaves the ring without an interview like he's off to France 🤣#SBWvGallen — GazDog 🇦🇺 (@TheGazDog) July 16, 2025 Enjoyed that, Gal's body shots were heavy! #SBWvGallen — Gavin Wilson... (@GavWilson) July 16, 2025 I must have watched a different fight #SBWvGallen — LH654 (@LH654110) July 16, 2025 How good - let's see how humble SBW is in defeat. Didn't take him long to exit the ring - big heart wins again — Darrell Sessions (@sesho17) July 16, 2025 SBW left ring no interview surprise lol — Alan (@LastracePikey) July 16, 2025 SBW walks out again……!!! #sbwvsgallen — Wandering_dog ✋🏽😎 (@wander_bdog) July 16, 2025 Paul Gallen reveals exchange with SBW Gallen reacted with shock when the scorecards were read out having believed he clearly won the fight. Despite his shock at the judging, he revealed Williams wanted to bury the animosity and meet-up after the show is done. "I definitely lost one round, I think the second round and there was one other pretty close one and he got a point taken off, so how the hell is he winning (on one judge's card)?" Gallen said. "I got the win. That's all that matters and it will be there forever. "I'm 44 years old in less than a month's time. Sonny just came upon to me and said he wants to have a coffee man-to-man and I'm on for that. I've finished my fights, I'm getting on with my life. In a surprise admission, Gallen said he had Covid only a few weeks out from the bout and was just happy with the victory. "I'm not going to gloat, it's been a long time coming. I got the job done and that's all that matters," he added. The 43-year-old appears done with boxing as he turns his attention back to his commentary role for Channel Nine. Fans are still waiting to hear from Williams who did not address the media having appeared extremely disappointed with the split-decision loss.

Rural community in Western Bay of Plenty ‘in shock' as industrial park greenlit

Photo: LDR / John Borren ./ Alisha Evans A rural Western Bay of Plenty community is "in shock" as a controversial local industrial park is greenlit. Photo: Te Puna residents have been rallying against the development since 2021, as they say the culturally significant, flood-prone wetland is inappropriate for the business. Resource consents were granted for the industrial park by an independent commission whose decision was released last week. Te Puna Industrial Limited bought 12ha of industrial-zoned land at 297 Te Puna Station Rd for $4.7 million in 2021 and applied for consents from the Western Bay of Plenty District and Bay of Plenty Regional councils in 2022. The company is half-owned by shipping container company ContainerCo. ContainerCo managing director Ken Harris said they planned to build "very low-intensity, specialised businesses" at Te Puna Business Park. ContainerCo managing director Ken Harris. Photo: LDR / Supplied Plans included refrigeration engineering, workshop activities including container washing, and the company's sales office. The business park website said ContainerCo would hold a "small supply" of up to 300 containers at the site. Priority Te Puna spokesperson Alison Cowley said the community was "in shock and very depressed" about the decision. "People took the assumption that it was so ridiculous that it was never going to happen." There were safety concerns because of the increase in trucks and heavy vehicles on Te Puna Rd from the park, Cowley said. "We feel that the impact on Te Puna Village and the Te Puna Rd corridor has not been in any way considered." Alison Cowley is worried about having a higher number of trucks and heavy vehicles in the area. Photo: LDR / Alisha Evans Cowley said the consent conditions were "extremely stringent" so it was up to the council to ensure they were complied with. Concerned locals formed the incorporated society, Priority Te Puna in 2022. They intend holding a public meeting about the consent approval on 23 July at 7pm at the Te Puna Memorial Hall. Harris said there had been a "huge amount of misinformation" spread about the development, which was "disappointing". There were signs dotted around the settlement saying, "Container Terminal, Te Puna Says No" and "Wrong Business, Wrong Place, No Container Terminal". Signs are dotted around Te Puna opposing the industrial park on Te Puna Station Road. Photo: LDR / John Borren There was no intention to build a container terminal or a container park of any scale, he said. "This is a facility that will fit into the community and be good for the region." The consent process was "very thorough and rigorous", Harris said. The traffic plans were "carefully considered" by experts and if people were concerned, they could call the company, he said. "If traffic causes a problem people should talk to us and we will listen carefully and adjust plans as required." Once fully developed, the site would generate 774 vehicle movements per day, with a peak of 125 vehicles an hour, according to the commission's decision report. It also said Western Bay of Plenty District Council had committed to upgrading the Te Puna Station Rd/Te Puna Rd intersection, with works set to start in October and finish late January. Harris said they would also be establishing community and mana whenua liaison groups. The land is culturally significant to Pirirakau hapū, who occupied the Pukewhanake Pā at the headland of the Te Hakao valley, and the wetland was once an important food source for them. The consents went through a lengthy process, including public submissions in 2023. Of the 273 submissions 271 were opposed, one was neutral, and one did not clearly state a position. At hearings in July 2024, 17 submitters addressed the independent commission of Fraser Campbell, James Whetu, and chair Rob van Voorthuysen. Harris said work would begin at the site in October with landscaping and supporting infrastructure as well as wetland restoration. A 5.24ha area will be developed first and 2.21ha in the future. -LDR is local body journalism co-funded by RNZ and NZ On Air.
