Lawyer found guilty of 17 counts of misconduct: Law Society of Manitoba

A Manitoba lawyer has been found guilty of 17 counts of professional misconduct by the Law Society of Manitoba, with disciplinary measures to be decided at a later date. The decision dated June 20, 2025, found Paul Sydney Vyamucharo-Shawa breached the Law Society of Manitoba's Code of Professional Conduct following hearings that spanned eight months. A three-person panel found the 67-year-old sole practitioner guilty of offences such as breach of integrity, failure to treat the court with 'candour, courtesy and respect,' recording conversations with clients and other lawyers without their consent, and sending abusive or offensive correspondence. 'The panel cannot escape the very distinct impression that Mr. Vyamucharo-Shawa, to this day, lacks insight into the impact his behaviours and his words—spoken or written—have on others in the profession with whom he deals with on a daily basis,' reads part of the 78-page decision. The charges come after three citations were filed against him between 2022 and 2024, pertaining to a fee dispute with a former client, a real estate transaction and a litigation matter. Several of the charges pertain to letters he sent to a Court of King's Bench justice and the society, including asserting that the justice was 'continuing to hog and not doing the needful' and was engaging in 'needless improper interference with access to justice.' Vyamucharo-Shawa was previously suspended from practising law for six months in 2019 after pleading guilty to five counts of professional misconduct, according to files with the Law Society of Manitoba. In 2008, he also pled guilty to four charges of professional misconduct, and in 2000, he pled guilty to nine charges of professional misconduct—with multiple charges relating to misappropriation of nearly $20,000 from a trust account. In 1999, he accepted a formal caution for breaching a trust condition. The latest decision says the discipline committee administrator will be contacted to arrange a date for a hearing on sanctions.

Members of British Jewish body suspended after criticising Israel to launch appeal

Thirty-six elected representatives to the UK's largest Jewish organisation are to appeal against disciplinary action taken against them after they criticised the Israeli government's operations in Gaza, and have said they remain 'deeply concerned' about the war. The Board of Deputies of British Jews announced on Tuesday that five of the group would be suspended for two years and 31 would be reprimanded for breaching its code of conduct after a two-month investigation. In a statement released on Thursday, the group said they would appeal after taking legal advice. They 'remain deeply concerned about the remaining hostages, the appalling humanitarian crisis and ongoing war in Gaza and the further deteriorating situation in the West Bank', they said. The five deputies who gave media interviews about an open letter that was published by the FT in April had received 'the enhanced punishment of effective expulsion from the board' as they were suspended for the remainder of their terms of office, the statement said. It was 'the biggest mass disciplinary action in the board's history, with over one in 10 elected board members disciplined', it added. The open letter caused a furore among British Jews amid growing divisions over the war and distress at the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. It said that 'Israel's soul [was] being ripped out' by military action that renewed in March, and that the signatories could no longer 'turn a blind eye or remain silent' on the issue. Statements issued by the Board of Deputies since the war began in response to atrocities committed by Hamas on 7 October 2023 have been broadly supportive of the Israeli government's actions. The board launched an investigation after receiving complaints from other members. It stressed that it welcomed a diversity of opinions, debate and free speech but that its code of conduct required deputies not to misrepresent the position of the board and not to bring the institution into disrepute. The reprimanded group's statement said they stood 'in solidarity with the 70% of Israelis that consistently say they want an immediate end to the war in Gaza, which is the perceived price for the return of all the hostages'. Since writing the open letter, a lack of food and aid had 'engineered conditions of scarcity, which has seen hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Palestinians being killed week after week in the desperate scramble for survival that has been created'. There was 'no justification for the continuing misery and destruction being wrought on Gazan civilians'. Sign up to First Edition Our morning email breaks down the key stories of the day, telling you what's happening and why it matters after newsletter promotion Harriett Goldenberg, one of those suspended, said: 'So many Jews in the UK agreed with our sadly groundbreaking letter. We were inundated with thanks from those who said we represented them, and that we were their voice. It is tragic that voice is still needed.' Philip Goldenberg, another suspended deputy, said the board's executive was 'effectively expelling those who spoke inconvenient truth unto power. This is utterly contrary to the Jewish tradition that robust debate is an essential part of a civilised life, and feels more like Putin's Russia.'

Norwich City football steward wins unfair dismissal case

A former football club steward who sent an inappropriate image of two politicians to another staff member has had his claim for unfair dismissal City Football Club (NCFC) dismissed Gennaro Romano in November 2023 for breaching its disciplinary policies, a position that the tribunal found to be "unfair and unreasonable".Mr Romano had "repeatedly apologised" for his "genuine mistake" of forwarding images of Diane Abbott MP and Nicola Sturgeon MSP alongside comments about the comedian Russell said it would not comment on the outcome of the tribunal which found the club's disciplinary process was "riddled with unfairness". The tribunal heard that Mr Romano had worked as a steward for NCFC without a contract in his spare time since 2011 and had an "unblemished record". In September 2023 Mr Romano attended a meeting with the club where he was accused of sending "messages of an inappropriate nature" to Neil Hunter, the head of Norwich City's academy Romano said he had not meant to send the messages to Mr Hunter and it had been intended for a close friend with a similar told the tribunal that the pictures were "not nice", that he understood they were "wrong" and had apologised a number of times throughout the process."We don't understand what further or more comprehensive apology [the club] could reasonably expect," the judges wrote in their summary. The judges added there was nothing in the club's disciplinary policy stating that an employee who sends a private message outside work was potentially committing an act of gross misconduct and described the club's interpretation of its own policy as "Orwellian".Following an investigation at the time, the club accepted the mistake was "genuine" but said "the claimant had not shown sufficient understanding or remorse", a statement that Mr Romano said "he strongly disputed". "It does not define me, these two pictures," he told the club's disciplinary hearing in October this, the club dismissed him, which he appealed against later that month."[At] both meetings I was confused," Mr Romano said. The tribunal judges agreed and said it was "hardly surprising" as "the approach and questioning of the respondent [NCFC] was inherently confusing".The tribunal heard that a positive character reference had been ignored and that Mr Romano's line manager was not spoken to for context about him and his general conduct. The tribunal agreed with Mr Romano: "We consider [the club's] position to be an unfair and unreasonable one." They upheld his claim of unfair dismissal but dismissed a claim of race discrimination on the grounds of him being Italian and English being his second language."We consider he became confused because the approach and questioning by the respondent was inherently confusing," they was "no evidence" he was treated less favourably on the grounds of his declined to comment when approached by the BBC. KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) is conducting a disciplinary investigation into a police officer accused of inviting a woman to meet and check into a hotel, as alleged in a video that has gone viral on social media. Its director, Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, said a police report on the incident was lodged yesterday by the chief of the Pandan Indah police station. 'The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 'JIPS Bukit Aman is also carrying out a concurrent disciplinary probe into the junior police officer involved, including aspects of supervision,' he said in a statement today. He added that firm action would be taken against any officer or supervisor if complaints are found to be substantiated. Earlier, national news agency Bernama reported that the woman who uploaded the video of the conversation — allegedly insulting to female modesty — has been urged to come forward to assist with the investigation. Ampang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said police had detected a 1-minute-30-second video showing a conversation between a police officer and a woman of unidentified ethnicity. The clip, which allegedly demeaned the woman's modesty, was posted on TikTok by a user named shaamajinbuulalu and later spread to Instagram.
