Morocco launches phase 3 of motorway project
Morocco's Ministry of Equipment and Water has launched the construction works for the third phase of the expressway connecting the Northern Fez city to the nearby Taounate, with a total budget of around 324 million Moroccan dirhams ($36 million). Minister Nizar Baraka launched the 19-km road project on Tuesday during his visit to the province of Taounate to assess the progress of the project. The overall project covers 73 kilometres, involving a total budget of MAD 1.56 billion ($173.4 million), according to local newspapers. Baraka said the project will significantly reduce travel time between Fez and Taounate, improving road safety and reducing traffic accidents along this key route. Baraka also reviewed a series of road projects that have been completed or are under construction, and those planned in the province of Taounate. For these projects, MAD 380 million ($42.2 million) was put towards the construction and engineering of the expressway, MAD 302 million ($33.5 million) went towards reducing regional disparities, and MAD 82 million ($9 million) went towards maintenance, widening, and reinforcing the road infrastructure. Decision to back track on downgrading Ōtaki-Levin expressway met with joy

Photo: Supplied / NZTA / Mark Coote A decision from Waka Kotahi NZTA to back track on rescoping the Ōtaki to North of Levin expressway has been met with joy in the community. Earlier this year, months out from work beginning a revised design for the road was released which saw on-ramps and overbridges removed and the northern end reduced from four lanes to two. The design also cancelled the bridge that would link Manakau Heights to the rest of Manukau. The change saw four councils - Horowhenua District Council, Horizons Regional Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Kāpiti District Council come out and say it would curtail development . Waka Kotahi said last month the design changes were primarily driven by the government's drive to save money. It has since been announced that three elements of the initial design would be reinstated. They were a grade separated interchange with Tararua Road in Levin, a southbound on ramp at the southern end of the road and a bridge at Manakau Heights. Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden. Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden said the changes demonstrated a clear and powerful response to strong local and regional advocacy. "It's not just a good outcome, it's the right outcome. "It reflects the strength of our community's collective voice and the effectiveness of Council's long-standing advocacy to ensure this project lives up to its original promises of safety, efficiency and regional connection." Wanden thanked the NZTA board and local Ōtaki MP Tim Costley for which advocacy. Costley told RNZ that the changes were great news and was excited to see construction start later this year. He said the road had been cancelled and delayed over the past six years, so the revised scope caused frustration in the local community. "That was a lot for people to deal with, and it was kind of like here we go again." Construction of the Ōtaki to North of Levin expressway was expected to be complete in 2029. Driver arrested after car plunges onto expressway in central Japan
Police have arrested the driver of a car that fell onto an expressway in central Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, sending two children to a hospital. The man is suspected of driving without a license and fleeing the scene after abandoning the vehicle. The passenger car broke through a roadside barrier in the city of Hamamatsu on Sunday afternoon and plunged onto the Tomei Expressway. Police say the two children inside the vehicle were taken to a hospital, but neither was injured. Emergency officials say one of them is 8 years old and the other is aged 7. Police had been searching for the driver, who fled the scene. They arrested 47-year-old Kurebayashi Akiya on Monday, who claims to be jobless and to live in the city of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture. The police have not disclosed whether the suspect has admitted to the charges. They say investigators found Kurebayashi walking alone in Hamamatsu earlier in the day. They say his driver's license was revoked about 10 years ago, and that the car was registered under someone else's name. They say the two children are not related to the man by family or blood, but they also say there is no indication of abduction. Investigators are looking into what kind of relationship they are in and other details of the incident, including why the suspect left the scene.
