Australian police looking for missing German backpacker

Police issued a public appeal for help Thursday in their search for a 26-year-old German woman missing for over a week while backpacking in Western Australia. Carolina Wilga was last seen on June 29 arriving in a Mitsubishi van at a general store in the small agricultural community of Beacon, population 123, which lies northeast of Perth. 'Carolina departed that area about five minutes later and has not been seen or heard from since,' homicide squad detective senior sergeant Katharine Venn told reporters. She had planned to travel through remote Western Australia and also go to the eastern coast, 'so our search area is therefore vast', Venn said. 'At the moment this is a missing persons investigation,' she added. 'There is no indication that there's any third party involvement in her disappearance, but our minds are open to any line of inquiry or any information that people bring forward to us.' Police released photos and video footage of Wilga. She spent two years backpacking the country, and had been working at mine sites in Western Australia, they said.

18 injured in Hamburg station knife attack, German woman detained

Eighteen people were injured in a knife attack during rush hour at the central railway station in the northern German city of Hamburg on Friday, police said. Earlier, emergency services had reported that 10 people had suffered serious or life-threatening injuries. All of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Police said a 39-year-old German woman was detained at the station after stabbing people at random on platform 13/14. She would be brought before a judge on Saturday, police spokesman Florian Abbenseth said, adding that the woman remained in police custody. The homicide squad has launched an investigation. Forensic experts inspect the scene at the central station in Hamburg on Friday. Photo: EPA-EFE Investigators believe that the woman acted alone and the stabbing was not politically motivated. 'Rather, we have findings that lead us to investigate whether she may have been in a state of mental distress,' Abbenseth said, adding that the suspect did not resist arrest.

Woman charged with alleged murder after grandsons found dead in small NSW town

A grandmother has been charged with the alleged double murders of two schoolboys in NSW's west. The brothers, aged seven and six, were found dead at a semi-rural property on the outskirts of Coonabarabran in north-west NSW on Monday afternoon. Police charged the boys' 66-year-old maternal grandmother with two counts of murder. She was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, police said. On Monday afternoon, two officers went to the home after a message sent to the communities and justice department triggered an emergency response. The officers broke into the house to find the boys' bodies in separate bedrooms, while their grandmother was nearby. She was arrested and taken to hospital. The woman was taken to Orange Police Station after she was released from hospital on Friday. A crime scene was established, and officers from the Orana mid-western police district and detectives from the state's homicide squad have commenced an investigation. Grieving members of a small rural community gathered to honour the lives of two boys on Friday. A tree was to be planted for each boy, along with a ceremonial presentation of the karate students' yellow belts.
