18 injured in Hamburg station knife attack, German woman detained

Eighteen people were injured in a knife attack during rush hour at the central railway station in the northern
German city of Hamburg on Friday, police said.
Earlier, emergency services had reported that 10 people had suffered serious or life-threatening injuries. All of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Police said a 39-year-old German woman was detained at the station after stabbing people at random on platform 13/14.
She would be brought before a judge on Saturday, police spokesman Florian Abbenseth said, adding that the woman remained in police custody.
The homicide squad has launched an investigation.

Investigators believe that the woman acted alone and the stabbing was not politically motivated. 'Rather, we have findings that lead us to investigate whether she may have been in a state of mental distress,' Abbenseth said, adding that the suspect did not resist arrest.

4 feared dead in Japan after falling into manhole

Four workers who fell into a manhole on Saturday during a sewage pipe inspection in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, are all feared dead after being recovered without vital signs, police said. Advertisement The four men, believed to be in their 50s, did not respond to calls after falling into the approximately 15-metre-deep manhole in Gyoda. The authorities received an emergency call at around 9:25am after one man apparently fell in, followed by the other three who tried to rescue him. A city official said the inspection was being carried out in the wake of a massive sinkhole that appeared at an intersection in Yashio, also in Saitama, on January 28, swallowing a truck and its driver, whose body was recovered in May. 01:14 Search under way in Japan for missing driver after truck plunges into a sinkhole Search under way in Japan for missing driver after truck plunges into a sinkhole The incident, believed to have been caused by sewer pipe corrosion, drew public attention to sinkholes and prompted the government to focus on measures addressing ageing infrastructure. In Japan, bear attack fears rise after woman mauled outside disabled home

A woman in Japan was sent to hospital unconscious after an apparent bear attack outside a facility for people with disabilities, police said on Friday. More wild bears have been spotted in residential areas in Japan in recent years, resulting in a rising number of attacks and deaths. 'A 73-year-old woman was found lying down with head injuries at the facility entrance on Thursday night,' a local police spokesman in the northern Akita region said. Emergency doctors told police they believed it was a bear attack based on the injuries the woman suffered, the spokesman said. Security camera footage outside the facility showed a bearlike animal attacking the woman when she was walking with what appeared to be a rubbish bag, he added. 'She was unable to talk due to injuries and was unconscious when sent to hospital.' According to government data, bears attacked 85 people in the year ending in March, with three people killed. In the previous year, there were 219 attacks and six deaths.

Hong Kong police have arrested two men for allegedly stealing credit cards and about HK$20,000 (US$2,550) in cash from passengers on two separate flights arriving from Thailand. The force said on Friday it received two reports the previous day that a foreign woman and a mainland Chinese man could not find the credit cards and cash they had placed under their seats and in overhead cabins, suspecting theft. It added that following preliminary investigations, officers arrested the two mainland men, aged 37 and 58, on suspicion of stealing two credit cards and HK$20,000 in cash from the two victims. Both suspects remain in custody for questioning, according to police. Advertisement
