iOS 26 Update Can Wait: Apple Brings iOS 18.6 Beta For iPhone Users With These Features

Last Updated: iOS 18.6 beta has come out for iPhone users as Apple sets the base for the iOS 26 version with the developer version for now. iOS 26 version is still in the developer beta stages but Apple has one last iOS 18 iteration rolling out, most likely in the early weeks of July. The iOS 18.6 beta has made its way to iPhone users in recent days, which ideally should be closing the curtains on the current version as Apple prepares for the biggest iOS 26 update when the iPhone 17 series launches this year. The iOS 18.6 beta is available for your iPhone if you have signed up for the iOS beta program. iOS 18.6 Beta Update: What iPhone Users Get The iOS 18.6 beta update is as heavy as the last iOS 18 versions, with the download size of well over 7GB that you can install via Wi-Fi and takes a little longer than usual to update and work. So does the heavy update come loaded with features? We have not seen any new notes for features with the iOS 18.6 beta update, and primarily seems to be focused on bug fixes and giving further stability to the OS in general. To be fair, we are not shocked by the lack of new features on offer with the iOS 18.6 beta, which might change with version 18.6.1 or 18.6.2 update. But with Apple already starting the iOS 26 developer betas and the public beta expected in July for a wide range of iPhones, we don't expect much to change with the last of the iOS 18 updates. iOS 26 Beta On Its Way It is intriguing to see the iPhone SE 2nd gen model included in the support list but if you want the latest Apple AI features, you will need to have the iPhone 15 Pro or newer models. Apple has rolled out the initial beta versions—both for developers and the public—of iOS 18.6, just days after showcasing iOS 26 at its WWDC 2025 event. This indicates that iOS 18.6 is likely to be the last significant software update within the iOS 18 lineup before the transition to iOS 26 begins alongside the iPhone 17 series later this year. Meta has introduced passkey authentication support for Facebook on Android and iOS, providing a simpler and more secure login experience. Instead of relying on passwords or SMS-based one-time passcodes, users can now sign in using biometrics such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or device PINs, all securely stored on their devices. YouTube is preparing to embed Google's Veo 3, the latest AI video creation model, into its Shorts platform. As outlined in a recent blog post, this integration will enable creators to produce high-quality videos using basic text inputs, all from within the Shorts creation suite. Google has unveiled that its Search app on Android and iOS will now support AI Mode with live, conversational interactions. First introduced during last month's Google I/O event, the feature enables users to have natural voice-based conversations with Search and explore results from across the web. Currently, it is only accessible in the US for those enrolled in the Labs' AI Mode test. Google is gradually deploying a new update to its Messages app on Android, according to 9To5Google. The update includes several new features such as 'Delete for Everyone,' the ability to snooze notifications, and enhanced personalisation options for RCS group chats—making it more competitive with platforms like WhatsApp and iMessage. Google-owned YouTube is reportedly intensifying its efforts against users who rely on ad-blockers. As per a report by 9To5Google, the platform has started deliberately slowing down video playback for those using ad-blocking tools. The report also suggests that YouTube may soon introduce longer ad formats as part of its ongoing changes. Google is reportedly rolling out 'Scheduled Actions' more broadly within the Gemini app for Android. According to a report by 9To5Google, this new capability is being made available to Gemini AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as certain Workspace users. The company may also provide a preview of its Android XR-based Project Moohan headset during the event. Apple has rolled out its 'Back-to-School' promotional campaign in India, featuring bundled product deals and special educational discounts on select MacBook and iPad models. Apple is reportedly exploring the use of generative AI to speed up the design of its custom chips, according to comments made by the company's top hardware executive. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, discussed the potential of AI in semiconductor development during a recent speech in Belgium, where he was honoured by Imec, a semiconductor research group that collaborates with major global chipmakers. Microsoft is reportedly planning to lay off thousands of employees, especially in sales, as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the announcement is expected early next month, following the end of Microsoft's fiscal year. While sales teams will be notably impacted, the layoffs could extend to other departments as well, and the exact timeline remains subject to change. A recent study has shown that chat-based generative AI systems produce significantly more carbon emissions when dealing with complex questions—such as those involving philosophy or higher-level math—compared to simpler tasks like basic history queries. Published in Frontiers in Communication, the study assessed how 14 large language models, including DeepSeek and Cogito, processed 1,000 test questions—500 multiple-choice and 500 subjective—to arrive at their findings.

Users will also see support for ChatGPT and tools like order tracking summaries inside Mail. Apple's stock apps are getting redesigned too. The Phone app now unifies Recents, Favourites, and Voicemails into a single view, and introduces features like Call Screening and Hold Assist. Messages gains sender screening, typing indicators in group chats, support for polls, and Apple Cash integration directly in conversations. A week after Apple introduced iOS 26 during the WWDC keynote, the company is now seeding iOS 18.6 beta 1 to developers. At this moment, it's unclear what's new with this update. However, this is likely one of the lightest iOS 18 updates; after all, the iOS 26 beta is already available, and Apple aims to release this big update later this fall. Historically, iOS x.6 versions don't bring many improvements, but sometimes new features are released. With iOS 17.6, Apple introduced the following functions: Today's Top Deals Best deals: Tech, laptops, TVs, and more sales Best Ring Video Doorbell deals Memorial Day security camera deals: Reolink's unbeatable sale has prices from $29.98 Apple News+ got Live Activity support for Home Screen and Lock Screen, so users could follow games and other factual stories It also brought a new Messages app setting that lets users filter unknown senders if they're international senders. That said, Apple could prepare a few new tweaks with iOS 18.6 during this beta cycle. With the previous software update, Apple added these changes: The update fixes the Contact Photos issue by offering Mail users a new menu that lets them toggle the feature with a simple tick. That should have always been the case. Apple added a new Pride wallpaper to celebrate the 'strength and beauty of LGBTQ+ communities around the world.' Parents now receive a notification when the Screen Time passcode is used on a child's device. Buy with iPhone is available when purchasing content within the Apple TV app on a 3rd party device. Fixes an issue where the Apple Vision Pro app may display a black screen. Support for carrier-provided satellite feature is available on all iPhone 13 models. With iOS 18.5 already being a light-on-features update, it's only natural that iOS 18.6 will follow that during the beta cycle. Looking in retrospect, iOS 18 did more cosmetic changes than breakthrough improvements, as Apple Intelligence didn't have the expected impact.
