Double-decker bus crashes into bridge in Manchester

A bus that crashed into a bridge in Greater Manchester has left 15 people in hospital. A major incident was declared by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) shortly after emergency services attended the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles at 3pm on Monday. The major incident status was stood down at 4.22pm, the ambulance service said. One witness told Manchester Evening News: 'I could just hear screaming coming from the top of the bus.' A spokesman for the ambulance service said: 'At 15.06 North West Ambulance Service received a call in relation to a bus collision on Barton Lane, Eccles, and declared a major incident shortly afterwards. 'The trust dispatched a number of resources, including 10 emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, our Hazard Area Response Team and colleagues from North West Air Ambulance. The first resource arrived on time at 15.10. 'NWAS treated 15 patients, who were all taken to Salford Royal or Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals.' A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said they were also responding to the collision and urged people to avoid the area because of road closures currently in place. Transport for Greater Manchester said the double-decker bus was a 100 service in operation at the time of the crash, adding that they had received reports of a double-decker bus crashing into a bridge. 'Our absolute priority right now is supporting the emergency response and the people who were on board,' a spokesman said.

Double decker bus crashes into bridge in Manchester

Emergency services declared a major incident after a double decker bus had its roof ripped off after crashing into a bridge in Manchester. Greater Manchester Police said they were responding to a collision between a bus and a bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles around 3pm on Monday. 'Emergency services are currently on scene as part of the ongoing work. Please avoid the area as road closures are currently in place.' At least 15 people were injured, North West Ambulance Service, who received a call around 3pm, declared a major incident shortly afterwards and treated people at the scene. Footage circulated on social media appears to show a yellow double decker bus hitting a bridge with a 3.5m height limit signposted on it. Some 10 emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, the Hazard Area Response Team (HART) and colleagues from North West Air Ambulance attended the scene. Patients were taken to Salford Royal and Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals. The ambulance service stood down the major incident status around 4.22pm, but continue to remain on scene. Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed the bus was a 100 service and was in operation at the time of the incident. Vernon Everitt, Transport commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: 'First and foremost, our thoughts are with everyone on board the bus. Our absolute focus has been on supporting emergency services in their response, with some people treated at the scene and some taken to hospital. "An immediate and urgent investigation into the circumstances is underway and we are working closely with the investigation team at Greater Manchester Police and the bus operator, Stagecoach. 'This is clearly a distressing situation for everyone involved and we'd like to thank emergency services for their swift response.' Road closures have been put in place and the area remains busy. An investigation is underway at the scene and the damaged bus has been removed from the scene. The transport operator warned some local congestion might take place as diversions were put in place into the evening. 'In order to support people making journeys in the area, bus tickets are being accepted on the Eccles and Trafford Park Metrolink lines while road diversions are in place,' the operator said.

One child killed in UK school bus crash

LONDON, July 17 (Reuters) - British police said on Thursday one child was killed and at least two others seriously injured after a collision involving a bus carrying school children in Somerset, southwest England. Avon and Somerset Police said the bus was carrying 60-70 people and was heading to Minehead Middle School at the time of the crash. A number of people were seriously injured, including two children who were taken to hospital by air ambulance, Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington told reporters. Police declared the collision a major incident, meaning an event with serious consequences requiring special arrangements from emergency services. Fire crews had earlier rescued people trapped in the bus in what was a "complex and technically difficult incident", Chief Fire Officer for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Gavin Ellis, said. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the incident was "heartbreaking." "There are no adequate words to acknowledge the death of a child. All my thoughts are with their parents, family and friends, and all those affected," he wrote on X.
