PAS warns of disciplinary action over insensitive remarks

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said lieutenant-general Johnny Lim's promotion is a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PAS says it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any of its members who engage in insensitive behaviour that undermines national unity and fosters disharmony. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said a controversial Facebook post by a division chief regarding newly promoted lieutenant-general Johnny Lim was completely against the party's stance. Lim's promotion made him the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to attain the three-star rank, and Takiyuddin stressed that the appointment was a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians. 'Diversity and differences in background should never be used as a reason or justification to treat any member of society unfairly,' he said in a statement tonight. 'Nor should they be used as grounds to deny progress, opportunities, achievements, abilities, or the legitimate aspirations of any individual or group. 'Racism or racial attitudes in any form or colour have no place in PAS and are incompatible with the nation's broader cultural values and national aspirations.' Yesterday, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad speculated in a Facebook post about Malaysia having its first Chinese prime minister in the next 30 to 40 years. The post included a screenshot of a news report on Lim's promotion to lieutenant-general, with a caption stating that the image was merely for decorative purposes. Zaharudin has since said the image of Lim had no connection to the 'satirical message' in his posting, which drew a public backlash. The post has since been deleted. Takiyuddin said the post was in complete contradiction to official policies, resolutions and vision of PAS, as outlined in its constitution, resolutions of its annual general meetings, party meetings or official statements. He said PAS remains committed to upholding the principles and realities of Malaysia's ethnic and religious diversity, which is a 'unique and valuable' feature of Malaysian society that must be 'nurtured carefully'. Takiyuddin said PAS clearly demonstrated this when it agreed to amend the party's constitution to allow non-Muslims to become members of the Islamic party. 'The talent, achievements, progress and success of any Malaysian in any field should be a cause for collective celebration, not the opposite. 'PAS extends its congratulations to lieutenant-general Lim,' he said.

Anwar urges Malaysians to embrace diversity as strength in face of global uncertainties at Sarawak's Gawai Dayak celebration

KUCHING, June 23 — Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event. Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the Asean chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders. He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. 'So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States,' he said. Meanwhile, Anwar also announced that he will meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto this Friday to discuss a proposal for Sarawak to be positioned as a hub for the Asean Power Grid (APG). He said Sarawak, with its strengths in hydroelectric, gas and hydrogen energy, has the potential to spearhead the APG, not only by linking to Sabah and Indonesia's Kalimantan, but also extending to the southern Philippines. — Bernama

Oil pipeline: Legault will not make efforts to attract a private developer

Premier François Legault during question period on May 20, 2025. (The Canadian Press/Jacques Boissinot) Quebec Premier François Legault has no plans to make any special efforts to attract a private developer who might propose a pipeline project. The question of building a pipeline in the name of national unity was on everyone's lips on Monday morning as the premiers' meeting got underway in Saskatchewan. The provincial and territorial premiers are spending the day in Saskatoon at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who wants to discuss projects of 'national interest.' All governments, with the exception of Quebec and British Columbia, have agreed in principle to an oil pipeline to enable oil exports to Asia and Europe. Several scenarios are on the table; Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has indicated that she would prioritize a route connecting British Columbia to Hudson Bay. This route, which does not pass through Quebec, may disappoint some: New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt has reaffirmed that her province is keen to provide a port for oil exports. Unity not an option, it's a national requirement, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that national unity is no longer an option, but rather a key requirement to ensure the continuity of the country's development. He said unity is the foundation of a country's development and is a catalyst for Malaysia's progress. 'Malaysia will only remain strong if we stand together united.'Stability and national unity are the basic conditions for all progress. In a world that is rapidly changing and full of challenges, unity is not an option, it is a necessity,' he said this in his congratulatory speech at the investiture ceremony to present federal awards, stars and medals in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara today. — Bernama
