21 times real-life fathers and sons played family on-screen
Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have watched their children grow up to become actors themselves. Real-life father-son duos sometimes team up to play on-screen families. Donald Sutherland and his son Kiefer played an estranged father and son in the film "Forsaken." It feels like nepo babies are everywhere — and sometimes, when both a parent and a child are actors, they work together. But playing a father-and-son duo on screen takes the relationship to a whole new level. Donald Sutherland, who died in June 2024, worked with his son Kiefer on the Western film "Forsaken." Kiefer played an outlaw trying to change his ways, while his father played a stern reverend. "Working with him is something I have wanted to do for 30 years," Kiefer told People in 2016. Donald, in turn, called Kiefer a "wonderful actor." Here are some of Hollywood's most famous fathers and sons who also played father and son on-screen in honor of Father's Day. Donald and Kiefer Sutherland starred in 2016's "Forsaken" as father and son. In "Forsaken," Kiefer Sutherland plays a retired criminal and quick-draw killer, John Henry Clayton, in the late 1800s. After abandoning his old ways, he returns home to try to repair his relationship with his estranged father, Reverend Samuel Clayton, played by Kiefer's real father, Donald. "As much as I planned as an actor that this is what I want to do with the character, I was not expecting how powerful it was going to be when I looked into my father's eyes," Kiefer told the Los Angeles Times in 2016. They appeared in other movies together before Donald's death, including 1996's "A Time to Kill," although they did not play father and son. Dominic West joined the cast of "The Crown" for season five as Prince Charles. West's real son, Senan West, played Prince William. Dominic replaced Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles in seasons five and six of Netflix's royal drama "The Crown," which concluded its run in 2023. Charles, of course, has two sons: Prince William and Prince Harry. And there was no more perfect person to play Prince William than Dominic's real-life son, Senan, then 14, who was in three episodes of season five, according to IMDb. The movie got disastrous reviews, and the elder Smith has discussed how "After Earth" strained his relationship with his son. "'After Earth' was an abysmal box office and critical failure," Smith wrote in his 2021 memoir, "Will." "And what was worse was that Jaden took the hit. Fans and the press were absolutely vicious; they said and printed things about Jaden that I refuse to repeat. Kirk Douglas, his son Michael, and his grandson Cameron all appeared in the 2003 film "It Runs in the Family" as three generations of the Gromberg clan. In "It Runs in the Family," each generation of Gromberg men is dealing with their own issues — Kirk's character, Mitchell, is struggling with health complications after a stroke; his son Michael's character, Alex, is trying to manage marital issues and career doubts; and his son Cameron's character, Asher, is feeling lost while away at college. To add even more Douglas genes to the film, Michael's mother and Kirk's ex-wife, Diana, also appear in the film as Mitchell's wife, Evelyn. Diana died in 2015, while Kirk died in 2021. But in "The Tiger's Tail," Brian plays the son of Brendan's character Liam, as Liam deals with his life heading into a downward spiral. Brendan also plays Brian's dad in a sitcom Brian co-created with his real-life brother Domhnall: "Frank of Ireland" in 2021. Both of Brendan's sons appear in "Frank of Ireland," though they do not play brothers — so, when Brendan shows up, he's only the father of Brian's character, Frank. In the film, Sheen's character, Thomas, grieves the death of his son, Daniel, played by Estevez, in flashbacks and at the beginning of the film by continuing Daniel's journey of walking the Camino de Santiago (or The Way) in Europe. "I had to keep reminding [my dad] that his character was not a friendly man, that he was suspicious of people, because that is not his nature," Estevez told The New York Times in 2011 when describing what it was like to work with his father. Martin has acted with another of his sons, Charlie, too. In 1987's "Wall Street," Charlie played Bud Fox, while his dad played Carl Fox. In "Barney's Version," based on the 1997 novel of the same name, Paul Giamatti plays the main character, Barney. Dustin plays Barney's eccentric father, while Jake plays the older version of Barney's son. They acted together again in the 2022 film "Sam & Kate." In "Rocky V," Sylvester Stallone cast his real-life son Sage to play Rocky's son, Rocky Jr. Sylvester cast his son, Sage, who died in 2012, to play the son of his iconic boxing creation, Rocky Balboa, in the fifth film of the series. The days of stealth wealth and quiet luxury are well and truly over. Instead, the wealthiest kids on the block are proudly boasting about what their billionaire parents did to get rich. The latest TikTok videos all follow the same formula: A person shares a statement, the next slide is a misconception often leveled at them, and follow-up slides reveal the more impressive truth. Or rather, the 'holy airball' moment—a basketball term for when someone takes a shot and misses the basket. Take Reese Witherspoon's daughter, Ava. The 25-year-old just posted about the movie that made her mum famous. 'I told him my mum's a lawyer, and he said, 'Oh what firm does she work at?'' she wrote. Then she cut to a behind-the-scenes photo of her and her Oscar-winning mum on the set of Legally Blonde, where Witherspoon plays a lawyer and wrote 'Holy-fricking air ball'. But there's a catch: Many TikTok accounts are capitalizing off their welll-known last names, but some aren't legitimately linked to the famous brands. The supposed 'heirs' of the Buc-ee's convenience store, Marriott and Folgers have come out of the woodwork. TikTok accounts for both Greyson Abercrombie and Gracie Abercrombie have separately claimed their parents own Abercrombie. However, whether or not they're related to the brand's brainchild, the founder, David Abercrombie, sold the company in 1907. An Abigail McDonald, similarly jokingly claimed her family owns McDonald's. Gen Zers bragging about their parents' wealth may be better off forging their own path to one day brag about. That's because despite expecting to come into an $84 trillion wealth transfer in the coming decades, actually, a rising number of ultra-wealthy retirees are opting to take their wealth to the grave. It's not that the generation has just forgotten about their young loved ones. Research from financial services company Northwestern Mutual shows that 60% do have a will in place—but their children and grandchildren are more likely to find funeral instructions in it than cash or the deed to their family home. In fact, over half of the boomers are explicitly planning not to leave an inheritance behind. And just one-fifth of baby boomers expect to leave anything behind. It comes as a growing cohort of people are trying to die with zero—essentially, enjoy all their wealth while they are alive and die with $0 in their bank account. Sting famously told his six kids he plans to spend his millions instead of leaving it to them. Celebrity chef Gordan Ramsay has echoed that he's 'definitely' not leaving his fortune to his six children; the most they will get out of him is a 25% deposit towards a flat—which is similar to many middle class Gen Z and millennial home owners today. Likewise, Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, said the billions she inherited from her husband won't be passed on to the three children they shared. The 47-year-old entrepreneur and socialite spoke lovingly about Eric, 11, while making an appearance at The Chelsea Flower show with Simon's Britain's Got Talent co-star Bruno Tonioli. Part of the next generation of nepo babies, Bruno insisted that Eric is 'not spoiled at all' and is 'very well brought up' despite his famous parents. Bruno also lifted the lid on Simon, 65, and Lauren's life in the Cotswolds where he said Eric loves to get involved in family yoga sessions when Bruno comes to stay with them. The interview marks the continuation to Eric being more in the spotlight after his life being kept very private for much of his early life. Now Lauren has revealed that Bruno is very much known as 'Uncle Bruno' to Eric who 'loves him'. Bruno added of Eric while speaking to Closer magazine: 'He's not spoiled at all actually. Eric is a very, very, very well brought up kid. I mean he's not spoiled at all.' On Eric now coming to some of the BGT shows as he moves more into the public eye Lauren said in the interview: 'It's a family show. And the nice thing is, like the other judges, like Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon, all of their kids and Eric they've grown up together. 'So it's a really nice family kind of vibe there. It's lovely!' Earlier this month Simon gave a rare insight into his family album as he shared pictures of his lookalike son Eric during sun-soaked dog walk. The music mogul shared rare snaps of his 11-year-old son with his 2.7million followers as they posed with their German Shepherd dog. The father and son duo rocked similar outfits for the outing, both donning dark T-shirts with Simon opting for a pair of black tracksuit bottoms while Eric donned black shorts and Nike trainers. Simon and Eric were also seen crouching down petting their adorable pet pooch and the TV star was seen holding a ball in his hand. He wrote: '1. Love, 2. Even more love, 3. It was a long walk'. And in December last year, Simon showed his competitive side as he enjoyed a swimming race with his son Eric. He spoke of his incredible relationships with his mum Julie and dad Eric and the devastation he felt at their passing - before being 'saved' when his partner Lauren told him she was expecting a baby. They welcomed their son Eric in 2014 - which Simon said 'changed everything' after his mental state reached the 'lowest level possible'. He said as he broke down: 'Before him I had reached the point where nothing mattered. It all hit me so hard. Being on TV I felt like a clown because I was dying inside. I put on loads of weight. 'If I was going to be hit by a bus the next day - I wasn't worried about anything like that. The whole time was dark. It was the lowest level. I can relate when people say that being alive doesn't matter anymore. 'I thought "what have I got to live for?" I didn't want to take my own life but I thought "if something terrible happens to me it wouldn't bother me". I do still suffer with depression sometimes.' He spoke about descending into a deep depression in the midst of his grief and realised that 'material things meant nothing'. Simon also became a workaholic to deal with his pain, explaining: 'After losing them all the material things I had meant nothing. 'I was on a downward spiral. I was desperately unhappy so I thought I would just become a vampire and I would work till 7am. 'I got addicted to that lifestyle. I had to find something to fill the loss and I became a workaholic. I was very successful but so unhappy. ' On finding out Lauren was pregnant he added: 'I got the call from Lauren and she said "are you sitting down?" That's how you know it's something big! 'And it changed everything. It made me happy again, it was perfect.'
