Amy Poehler Admits to Offensive ‘SNL' Sketches: ‘I Misappropriated … I Appropriated'
Amy Poehler has admitted that some of the sketches on 'Saturday Night Live' were offensive and 'appropriated.' The actor and comedian hosted her former costar Will Forte on her 'Good Hang' podcast this week, and the conversation turned to their mutual former work environment. Forte brought up 'SNL' first, and told Poehler that when he reflects on the show, it is clear that many sketches are 'all about getting a laugh' no matter what. Poehler quickly agreed. 'The part about getting older and being in comedy is you have to figure out: Everything has an expiration date,' she said, before noting that the 'In Memoriam' segment hosted by Tom Hanks during the show's February 2025 50th Anniversary special offered several examples. In one sketch from 2004, Ben Affleck yells at Fred Armisen's character, who appears to be disabled, and Poehler's character tells the actor, 'Oh my god, Ben Affleck just yelled at that mentally challenged guy!' '[It] which was like, 'Here's all the ways we got things wrong. And they showed way inappropriate casting for people. We all played people that we should not have played,' she said of the segment. 'I misappropriated. I appropriated. I didn't know. I did know.' 'It's very real, and the best thing you can do is make repairs, learn from your mistakes, do better – it's all you can do,' Poehler continued. Watch the conversation between Poehler and Forte in the video above. The post Amy Poehler Admits to Offensive 'SNL' Sketches: 'I Misappropriated … I Appropriated' | Video appeared first on TheWrap.

Russia's Summer Offensive in Ukraine Gains Ground With New Tactics
Russia's summer offensive in eastern Ukraine, launched in May, is showing battlefield gains across multiple fronts, probing and attacking with small, fast-moving units as fighting escalates daily. With its advance, Russia has shifted the war's rhythm. In May, Russian forces seized roughly 173 square miles, more than double April's gains, according to DeepState, a Ukrainian group that maps the conflict using combat footage. Most gains came south of Kostyantynivka, in the Donetsk region, and near the Russian border in the northern Sumy region. In a new development this spring, both sides have turned to motorcycles and civilian cars to quickly cross open terrain. Ukraine, which relies heavily on drones to hold its positions, is using civilian vehicles to resupply its defensive lines, while Russia uses them in assaults. 'It's a kind of renaissance of the cavalry, but with internal combustion engines,' said Col. Viktor Kevliuk, a Ukrainian Army reservist and an analyst at Ukraine's Center for Defense Strategies, a think tank. Here are the areas where the front is moving. Sumy In recent months, Russian troops have captured at least a dozen villages in the Sumy region. The advance is tiny, but in frequent steps, with small assault groups, often just two or three Russian soldiers, who probe Ukrainian positions in waves. 'Where the last surviving infantry is holding out, the next assault group arrives to build on any success,' Colonel Kevliuk said. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Long Island school nurse reassigned for wearing coat with three controversial letters during 'Superhero Day'
A New York nurse has been reassigned after allegedly dressing up as an ICE agent during a Superhero-themed fancy dress day at a largely Hispanic school. The employee, who has not been officially named, sparked fury among parents at Northwest Elementary School in Long Island by wearing a hat and jacket emblazoned with the controversial letters on Wednesday. Amityville Union Free School District said her outfit was 'perceived by some members of the school community as offensive or inappropriate in the educational setting'. 'The District takes all concerns related to the school environment seriously, particularly when they may impact students, staff, or families,' officials said. 'Upon learning of the situation, the staff member was immediately reassigned to a non-school setting pending a full review.' The district said it is investigating the 'personnel matter', and will not be providing any further details about the incident. Sixty percent of students enrolled at Northwest Elementary School for the 2023/2024 school year are Hispanic, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Amityville residents and parents erupted in fury online, with several people calling the ICE costume 'disgusting', while others called for the nurse to be fired. 'I hope karma is swift and she loses her job,' one person said. 'This is so disgraceful on so many levels. I feel so broken.' Another woman said she was 'appalled' by the outfit. 'Her abhorrent behavior needs to be dealt with immediately,' she said of the nurse. 'Wow. Truly disgusting,' another woman wrote. 'Call the Amityville Superintendent's office and email the Board of Education to demand consequences for this school nurse - a disgrace to her profession.' It comes as tensions surrounding Donald Trump's sweeping immigration raids have reached a boiling point, with widespread unrest erupting across the country. Protests broke out in Los Angeles on Friday, in response to ICE agents allegedly detaining two truckloads of people at a manufacturing site in the California city. The demonstrations escalated into violence, looting and arson over the weekend, with several protesters also waving Mexican and Palestinian flags. Trump responded by mobilizing 4,000 National Guard members to quell the riots, along with 700 US Marines. LA Mayor Karen Bass also said a curfew had been put in place from 8pm until 6am in an effort to quell the unrest. 'If you drive through downtown LA, the graffiti is everywhere and has caused significant damages,' Bass said, adding that 29 businesses were looted on Monday night alone. Demonstrators have said that Trump's immigration raids are lacking due process, while breaking migrant families apart. The LA protests also inspired anti-ICE demonstrations in other cities including New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. Some rallies involved a few dozen people, while others attracted thousands.

Russia says it has launched offensive in Dnipropetrovsk, eastern Ukraine
Russia says its forces have launched an offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region of eastern Ukraine. The AFP news agency says Russia is pushing into the region for the first time in its three-year invasion. The Russian defense ministry said on Sunday that forces from a tank division had reached the western border of Donetsk and are continuing to develop an offensive in Dnipropetrovsk. Elsewhere in Ukraine's east, Russian forces hit Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv with missiles, drones and guided bombs on Saturday. Local police say at least five people were killed. Kharkiv's mayor condemned the attack, describing it as the most powerful so far. On Friday, Russia pounded Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine with missile and drone attacks, causing a number of casualties. The bombardment is believed to have been in retaliation for Ukraine's drone strikes on Russian airbases on June 1. Reuters news agency quoted US officials as saying that Washington believes Moscow's threatened retaliation against the drone strikes has not happened yet in earnest. The news agency also reported one source as saying the full Russian response was "expected within days." It quoted a US official as saying the retaliation was likely to include different kinds of air capabilities, including missiles and drones.
