US: Over 100 dead in Texas floods as rescue ops continue amid improving weather

Texas: More than 100 people have lost their lives due to catastrophic flooding across central Texas in the US, with state authorities continuing rescue operations as drier weather is forecast for the coming days, as reported by CNN on Tuesday. As per CNN, among the most heavily impacted areas is Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls summer camp located along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, with 27 confirmed deaths of campers and counsellors in the floods, while 10 campers and one counsellor remain unaccounted for. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha reported that a total of 75 people have died in the county--48 adults and 27 children. Many of the child victims were attending Camp Mystic at the time of the disaster. Search efforts are ongoing, with 24 individuals still missing across the state, CNN reported. In Travis County, which includes the capital city of Austin, seven fatalities have been reported and ten others are missing, CNN reported, citing local officials. In Williamson County, Sheriff Matthew Lindemann confirmed that two people have died in the area and stated that one of the victims was recovered on Sunday (local time). Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated today that over 20 state agencies are actively involved in the emergency response, working around the clock to locate survivors and assess the full extent of the damage. Meanwhile, officials from the National Weather Service expect that the severe weather pattern will ease by Monday night (local time), bringing a significant reduction in rainfall. While some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday afternoon, they are not expected to pose a major flood threat, CNN reported. The drier conditions are forecast to continue through the end of the week, offering some relief to flood-stricken regions.

Former FEMA Administrator, Deanne Criswell, weighs in on the Texas flash floods that killed at least 90 people over the weekend, and shares her insight on how the continued rainfall will make rescue operations more difficult. Criswell also voices her thoughts on President Trump's claim that FEMA isn't good and the challenges FEMA and states face during extreme weather events. Russian Drone and Missile Strikes on Kyiv Kill at Least 14

Russia pummeled Kyiv with drones and missiles overnight on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and badly damaging several residential buildings, according to the local authorities, in one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in months. Air raid sirens blared for nearly 10 hours in Kyiv, as residents endured an all too familiar soundtrack: the buzz of attack drones flying over neighborhoods, the staccato of heavy machine guns trying to shoot them down and the thud of air-defense missiles trying to intercept Russian missiles. As dawn broke, thick plumes of black smoke rose over the capital, and the acrid smell of burning hung heavy in the air. Damage was reported at more than a dozen sites across Kyiv, with several residential buildings in flames or gutted. More than 40 people were injured, officials said. 'Today, Kyiv endured another difficult night,' Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, wrote on social media. 'Another attack, more wounded, destroyed homes, human suffering and anxiety. Search and rescue operations under the rubble are ongoing.' Videos and images shared by residents and lawmakers after the attack showed a section of a multistory residential building collapsed, leaving a gaping hole in the apartment block. The local authorities warned that some victims might still be trapped under the rubble. It was unclear where exactly the 14 fatalities occurred across the capital. But Mayor Vitali Klitschko also said a 62-year-old U.S. citizen was found dead in the Solomianskyi district, near the city center, though it was not immediately clear if his death was linked to the attack. Tuesday's attack was the latest in a series of Russian air assaults that have intensified in recent weeks. Russia now regularly launches hundreds of drones at night in an effort to overwhelm Ukraine's air defenses, before firing missiles that are more difficult to intercept. The attack further dimmed already fragile hopes for a cease-fire. It came as world leaders gathered at the Group of 7 summit in Canada, where the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, was set to push for tougher sanctions on Russia and increased aid for his battered country. Mr. Zelensky had also been expected to meet President Trump on the sidelines of the meeting, but the American leader left the summit late on Monday and returned to Washington.

Body of missing 10-year-old girl found as Mthatha floods death toll rises to 88

The Mthatha floods death toll has risen to 88. The body of a 10-year-old girl who went missing in Libode was found on Sunday morning. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government will be hosting a provincial day of mourning on Thursday, in honour of those who lost their lives. The body of a 10-year-old girl who went missing in Libode, Eastern Cape has been found, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 88 as a result of the Mthatha floods. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government on Sunday morning said of the 88 bodies where post-mortems have been completed, 83 have been positively identified by families and five are yet to be identified. 'About 56 bodies have been released to families at the end of the day on Saturday. The provincial government remains in close contact with affected families to provide necessities and psychosocial support,' the Eastern Cape government said in a statement. As rescue operations continue, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called on residents to report persons who went missing around Tuesday, 10 June 2025, in the areas that were affected by the severe weather conditions, to law enforcement. Mabuyane expressed deep concern for those still unaccounted for, saying the information from the public will assist in focusing efforts effectively and bringing closure to anxious families. READ | Flood-hit Mthatha residents picking up the pieces and searching for loved ones Last week, a bitterly cold winter storm tore through the largely rural and underdeveloped Eastern Cape, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The hardest hit was Mthatha, where relentless downpours caused a river to burst its banks, swallowing roads, submerging homes and claiming scores of lives. To honour those who lost their lives, the province has announced it would hold a provincial day of mourning on Thursday, 19 June, in Decoligny Village, Mthatha. 'This solemn occasion is dedicated to honouring the memory of all the individuals who tragically lost their lives during these floods,' Mabuyane said. The premier determined that all non-essential programmes and events that were scheduled for this day in the province be postponed. 'The provincial government recognises the profound pain and loss suffered by the affected families and communities, and it remains committed to standing with them in this difficult time,' Mabuyane added. The event is open to the public, including faith-based organisations, religious leaders, and congregations across the province.
