Police believe store robberies in Anaheim and Santa Monica are related
A smash-and-grab robbery at an upscale clothing store in Santa Monica could be connected to an attempted jewelry store heist in Anaheim, according to investigators. The Santa Monica Police Department believes the crew may be involved in more robberies in Southern California. Investigators said the clothing store robbery happened at The RealReal location near the 200 block of 26th Street on July 18. More than a dozen suspects smashed through the first store's front glass door before breaking into multiple display cases and stealing "high-end merchandise," according to Santa Monica PD. Witness Ramondo Taylor recorded a video of the thieves carrying bags of clothing and other goods into four getaway vehicles. Santa Monica police said the license plates had been removed from the suspects' SUVs and cars. "I knew they were up to no good," Taylor said. "I'm going wow, this is like a movie." Detectives believe the suspects carried out a similar smash-and-grab robbery a day before the Santa Monica robbery. On July 17, a group of thieves smashed into the Al-Amira Jewelry store in Anaheim while the owner was inside. The owner scared off the suspects by firing a single shot shortly after the break-in. In both cases, no one was hurt.

‘A deliberate and coordinated crime:' Police arrest smash-and-grab robbery suspects following brief pursuit in Hamilton
A Hamilton Police vehicle is shown in Hamilton, Ont., Friday, May 2, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nick Iwanyshyn Five people, four of whom are youths, were arrested following a smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry story in a Hamilton mall on Wednesday night. Police say that four masked suspects entered Peoples Jewellers inside Eastgate Square mall just before 8 p.m. and used hammers to shatter display cases and seize merchandise. Investigators say that the robbery only lasted for about 20 seconds, at which point mall security responded and made their presence known, prompting the suspects to flee. From there, one of the security guards followed the suspects from a safe distance and made note of the grey Honda Civic they were seen entering. That information was passed on to responding officers, who were soon able to locate the vehicle travelling at a 'dangerous speed' through heavy traffic on Queenston Road, police say. Moments later, the vehicle struck a curb and came to an abrupt stop on the Red Hill Valley Parkway off-ramp with two flat tires. The suspects fled on foot but police say that all of them were apprehended by officers in the surrounding areas. The arrests were all made within 20 minutes of the initial robbery report, police say. 'This robbery was a deliberate and coordinated crime carried out by individuals from outside the city, reflecting a concerning trend of similar 'smash-and-grab' incidents across the GTHA,' police said in a news release. 'Thanks to timely community reporting, the attentiveness of mall security, and a swift, coordinated police response, all suspects were located and arrested within 20 minutes, and the stolen property was successfully recovered.' Police say that the suspects taken into custody include a 18-year-old male from Mississauga, two 17-year-old males from Brampton and a 13-year-old and 16-year-old from Toronto. Police say that the vehicle the suspects were travelling in was subsequently determined to be stolen from Toronto. Officers located bear spray, black plastic bags, jewelry and a hammer in the vehicle. The suspects are each charged with robbery, possession of stolen property and disguise with intent. 'Due to the seriousness of the offence and the organized nature of the crime, bail was opposed,' police said in the news release.

WARMINGTON: Jewelry store bandits strike again – and again
Witnesses described it sounding like gunshots going off one after another. Boom, boom, boom, bang, bang, bang. And then the sound of glass shattering. 'There were no shots fired,' Peel Regional Police clarified in a statement posted on X. 'Callers heard the hammers hitting glass.' Not at one jewelry store in the Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga but two. It was 6:30 p.m. on a busy Thursday night in the popular mall when three young masked men stormed the second-floor and hit the Fine Gold jewelry store first, taking out hammers, smashing display cases and grabbing merchandise. And then, a short distance away, they repeated the violence at Peoples Jewellers. The crooks took off with an unknown amount of jewelry. Police responded quickly to the wild scene and tried to calm down shocked merchants and shoppers alike. 'Multiple masked suspects fled in a vehicle.' Police said, adding there were 'no injuries.' At least no external injuries. On the inside, these retail workers were shaken up. 'I don't understand why when young people commit an armed robbery like this are given special treatment by the court when they are caught,' one of the victimized managers said. 'Why are their names not printed and why don't they do jail time?' Fair questions. It's so ironic this incident occurred; at the very same time I filed my column on the Jan. 19 smash-and-grab robbery at the Charm jewelry store – located just steps away from the two shops targeted Thursday evening. Police had just announced the arrests of two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old in that case – two of whom were also charged with breaches of the release conditions from previous alleged crimes committed. It is believed that those three accused were still in custody but the joke inside the mall was – as Premier Doug Ford alluded to when some youth tried to steal his Cadillac Escalade – they were probably already out. 'They know the game,' said another manager of one of the stores hit. 'They know if they are even caught, they are out the same day.' Meanwhile, I went back over to the mall Friday to check on things and found both stores were closed for the day as they cleaned up the mess left behind. The police investigation is still underway, so there will be more to say on this later. WARMINGTON: Accused teenage jewelry store bandits can trick court but not the cops WARMINGTON: As America heads for a 'Golden Age,' Canada's windows and dreams are broken Trio accused of two Mississauga jewelry store heists in two days 5 suspects wanted after lastest smash-and-grab jewelry store robbery in Oshawa For now, these bandits got away. But the teenage boys accused of the Jan. 19 heist also allegedly got away – until cops caught up with them. It will no doubt only be a matter of time before this trio of crooks is caught as well. Even if it wasn't the same people as before, with the timing of it being on the same day as police announced the other arrests, could it be that a message was being sent? Either way, a lot of people are asking, when are Ontario courts going to send a message to these thugs? When are they going to start naming young offenders who are violent and give them real jail time? Until the justice system changes its approach, it will remain open season on Ontario businesses, people, cars and homes. jwarmington@
