Detroit street takeover of 200 people leaves car on fire, multiple arrests
The Brief Hundreds took over a Detroit intersection, setting a car on fire and harassing bus drivers; three arrests were made. Police faced challenges responding due to the Mobile Field Force shift ending; the crowd was organized via social media. Resident Stephen Erter cleaned up after the chaos, hoping future incidents wouldn't result in fatalities. DETROIT (FOX 2) - For the second time in two weeks, hundreds of rowdy people paralyzed a Detroit neighborhood, taking over an intersection, setting a car on fire, lighting fireworks, and harassing bus drivers. What they're saying A street takeover occurred on Detroit's west side for an hour and a half. Detroit police say about two hundred people packed the intersection of 7 Mile and Meyers. Stephen Erter lives a couple of houses down from where it happened after 3 a.m. Sunday morning. "They were shooting fireworks at cars, they were threatening to shoot people," he said. "Alcohol and guns don't mix. A group of people were jumping on top of the white Challenger that was set on fire, and then a group of people started to jump on the bus, and then they started throwing fireworks at the bus, M80s at the bus." Three people were arrested when Detroit police eventually assembled and responded. DPD's Mobile Field Force was put in place last summer after another illegal gathering on the city's east side where 21 people were shot, but their shift ended at 3 a.m. "Because we did not have the large mobile field force on site anymore, we had to pull police cars from multiple precincts. You can't send one scout car into a crowd of 200 people and not put the officers at risk," Mayor Mike Duggan said. "It's becoming clear to the chief and me that these folks are figuring out the mobile field force is going home at 3 o'clock and have adjusted their strategy." Dig deeper Sources say these street takeovers draw crowds from the city and suburbs, and they organize on social media for social media. "You're not going to get any likes in the parking lot, but if they shut down 7 Mile, they will," Erter said. Erter cleaned up liquor bottles off the block. He says next time, he doesn't want them to be bodies.

Video posted to The Citizen App showed several drivers performing burnouts, donuts and other stunts at the intersection, holding up traffic for others. Several businesses at a nearby strip mall sustained damage like broken windows. At least one business was burglarized, according to police. No arrests were made as of Monday morning. It's not clear if any suspects were identified.

Florida Troopers Brutally Stop Fleeing Street Takeover Cars
Read the full story on The Auto Wire Watching Florida Highway Patrol troopers stop fleeing street takeover dorks in brutal fashion is admittedly entertaining. After all, the takeover or sideshow crowd is annoying and dangerous, plus they give car enthusiasts a bad footage from FHP shows them teaming up with local police in Orange County to bust up a takeover that's in progress. As soon as the kids doing smokey donuts and recording the antics realize police are coming to get them, they scatter. You see the line of cars going the opposite direction as dozens and dozens of carloads of kids try getting away. Normally, police are able to bust a car or two, but these troopers take off the gloves and help take down more than that. Our camera car crosses over at a median break and goes wrong way with the fleeing suspects. His colleagues follow and while a few more squeeze past, they're able to blockade the road, trapping quite a few people who were fleeing. But two drivers decide to ram the FHP cruisers. They weren't able to escape and were arrested. Instead of just facing charges related to the takeover and fleeing law enforcement, they're also getting aggravated assault charges. These kids need to learn and apparently the won't listen unless they have to learn the hard way. In Florida as well as many other states, street takeover events have become a real problem law enforcement has to address. Last year, a new law in Florida has allowed police and prosecutors to crack down on the illegal gatherings more than ever before. What this means is the people you see get busted in this video are facing some serious consequences, not just a slap on the wrist. That might have factored into their being so desperate to get away, although we've seen that type of behavior in California where takeover participants often get a slap on the wrist, if that. Multiple businesses burglarized during street takeovers in Bellflower and Lakewood
Several businesses in the Bellflower and Lakewood areas were burglarized on Saturday near the locations of two different street takeovers, deputies said. The first sideshow was reported a little before 2 a.m. near Artesia Boulevard and Woodruff Avenue in Bellflower, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. At the same time, an AM/PM in the 1200 block of Artesia was burglarized, deputies said. Surveillance footage from the convenience store shows the moments that some of the participants in the nearby takeover begin to run through the front doors, jumping over the cashier's counter and ransacking shelves. At one point, one of the suspects can be seen throwing something at the employee inside as he tries to fend them off from entering the store. The group then moved to a beauty store nearby, shattering the windows at the business' entry. A short time later, at around 2:15 a.m. in Lakewood, deputies said there was a second street takeover in the 2700 block of Del Amo Boulevard. Investigators did not have information on any burglarized businesses near the second takeover, but CBS News Los Angeles obtained video from inside a phone store showing a group of suspects ripping display phones off their hooks. "I just want the people that did this to be caught," said the store's owner, who says that there were about 15 people inside of the store during the burglary. No arrests have yet been made, according to LASD, who said it's unclear if the separate incidents are connected to the same group of suspects.

Street Takeover BMW Gets Jacked Fleeing From State Trooper
Read the full story on The Auto Wire Watching a Georgia trooper take down a fleeing BMW that was allegedly participating in a street takeover is quite satisfying. If you've ever had to deal with the takeover crowd in person, you'd understand takeovers continue to be a problem in Georgia, which is why when Georgia troopers came across one in progress, they chased down various suspects, busting them for participating in the parking lot stunts. While there are plenty of cars fleeing the scene, this trooper in the dashcam footage zeroes in on the BMW 3 Series and locks onto it. We think the missing rear bumper cover might have something to do with it. After all, when fools do their little stunts in takeovers, they inevitably crash into each other or inanimate objects, and sometimes into the people watching, which can damage the car. That might involve the bumper cover getting torn off. So there's a good chance the Bimmer driver wasn't there just watching the takeover but in fact was actively participating, doing donuts, drifting, and in general being a reckless idiot. That's why we believe the trooper locked onto the little German car. Once he does, he pursues the BMW relentlessly and the driver quickly seems to realize he's been singled out. Instead of heading for the main road where he was originally running along with plenty of others from the takeover, he peels off from the pack. The suspect driver speed through the parking lot, trying to use the supposedly superior handling of the Teutonic ride to ditch the trooper. Only, it doesn't work, which we chalk up in part to training trumping just equipment. Performing a beautiful PIT maneuver, the trooper spins the Bimmer into a curb and we think it might have hit a tree, because the airbags deployed. The collision disables the car, allowing the trooper to take the people inside into custody, ending their fun little night.
