Barcelona release statement following Marc-Andre ter Stegen surgery
Barcelona have confirmed that captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone surgery for a recurring back problem. There is plenty of intrigue surrounding his diagnosis, given the length of his injury could have a major impact on Barcelona's ability to register new players in the coming month. The German goalkeeper announced the decision last week, explaining that he would be out for three months, one month short of the required four-month period for Barcelona to activate La Liga's injury rule. That would allow them to use 80% of the amount of ter Stegen's salary limit cost towards other players on a temporary basis, with new additions Roony Bardghji, Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia currently unregistered. Marc-Andre ter Stegen of FC Barcelona warms up during the Spanish league, La Liga EA Sports, football match played between Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona at La Ceramica stadium on September 22, 2024, in Valencia, Spain. AFP7 22/09/2024 ONLY FOR USE IN SPAIN No timeline given on recovery for ter Stegen It means their ability to do so may hinge on the medical report written up by surgeon Amelie Leglise, who operated on ter Stegen on Tuesday. That much was confirmed by Barcelona, but they did not give a recovery period. Barcelona to submit medical report to La Liga It had been suggested last week by another doctor that ter Stegen's announcement will have little impact on La Liga's ruling. The Blaugrana now have 30 days to submit a report to La Liga, as per MD. Four members of the medical commission for La Liga will then give the green light to the league on the report they receive, provided they perceive no issues. Barcelona were reportedly very unhappy with ter Stegen's announcement, seeing it as deliberate sabotage of their plans, and questions have been raised over his captaincy for next season.

FC Barcelona likely to make decision on Marc-Andre ter Stegen's captaincy after Joan Gamper Trophy
The ongoing saga surrounding Marc-Andre ter Stegen's captaincy at FC Barcelona has captured the attention of fans. As the club prepares for the 2025-26 La Liga season, tensions between the German goalkeeper and the Barcelona hierarchy have escalated, putting his role as captain under intense scrutiny. The crucial decision is set to be made after the Joan Gamper Trophy. The rift between Marc-Andre ter Stegen and FC Barcelona stemmed from a series of events that have challenged the goalkeeper's standing within the club. The 33-year-old, who has been an important part of Barcelona's defense since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, announced he would undergo back surgery, sidelining him for an estimated three months. This timeline, however, has caused friction, as La Liga regulations require a minimum four-month absence to classify an injury as long-term, allowing the club to use 80% of ter Stegen's salary to register new signing Joan Garcia. The club's medical staff countered, estimating a recovery period of four to five months, highlighting a discrepancy that has fueled internal discord. Marc-Andre ter Stegen's public statement about his injury and recovery timeline has been perceived by some within the club as prioritizing personal interests over the team's needs. This sentiment has led to growing calls to strip him of the captaincy. Barcelona's captaincy is traditionally decided through a squad vote following the Joan Gamper Trophy, a pre-season match that marks the symbolic start of the season. However, speculation is that head coach Hansi Flick may face pressure from club officials to intervene and remove the armband from ter Stegen directly, bypassing the usual democratic process. Several factors contribute to this debate. Firstly, ter Stegen's absence at the start of the season due to his surgery means he will likely miss the Joan Gamper Trophy, where the captain traditionally addresses the fans. Second captain Ronald Araujo is expected to take on this role, potentially signaling a shift in leadership dynamics. Moreover, with Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny ahead of him in the pecking order, ter Stegen faces the prospect of being the third-choice goalkeeper, a position deemed incompatible with the captaincy by some board members. Since joining Barcelona, ter Stegen has won 19 trophies, including six La Liga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League. Named captain in August 2024 following Sergi Roberto's departure, his leadership was tested last season when a severe knee injury sidelined him from September to May. Despite retaining the armband during his recovery, his return was marred by public frustration with the club and a refusal to accept a reduced role, creating tension with Flick.

Barca's Ter Stegen to be out for about three months due to back surgery
dpa Madrid Barcelona's Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to be sidelined for months, after he confirmed on Thursday that he will have to undergo another back surgery. 'Today is a personally difficult day for me,' the 33-year-old wrote onX, announcing that he expects to be out for about three months. 'Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear,'ter Stegen said. 'Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain,' he wrote. 'After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.' Ter Stegen had been training away from the team last week due to back problems. This was originally believed to be a reaction to having been told that he would be only third choice behind newly signed Joan García and Wojciech Szcz?sny. Ter Stegen has been linked with a transfer as he will also need playing time to retain his status as Germany's number one in the run-up to next year's World Cup. A number of clubs ranging from Manchester City and Chelsea to AC and Inter Milan as well as Monaco are said to be interested in ter Stegen. Back surgery and the following rehabilitation could however complicate a summer transfer. Ter Stegen already had back surgery in December 2023 and missed three months. He was also sidelined for many months last season with a severe knee injury.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen to undergo back surgery and miss three months of action
FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will be out of competition for at least three months as he is about to undergo surgery to repair a back injury. Due to back pain, ter Stegen has been unable to train with Barça, which returned to the training field last week. On Thursday, the 33-year-old wrote a heartfelt statement on his Instagram story regarding his injury. After noting his love for the club and its fans, ter Stegen said, "Today is a difficult day for me, on a personal level. "Physically and athletically, I'm in great shape, but unfortunately, I'm not exempt from pain. After intense conversations with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the fastest and safest way to fully recover is back surgery," ter Stegen wrote. "After the last back surgery, I returned to the playing fields after 66 days, almost two months, but this time, doctors believe it will take about three months, as a precaution and not to take risks. "On an emotional level, it hurts me a lot not to be able to help the team during this time, but fortunately, the rehabilitation is bearable and the road back is plotted," he added. "I will keep you updated on my recovery and I want to, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all, dear friends, for always being by my side. Don't worry, I'll be back!" Ter Stegen's upcoming absence comes after he appeared in just 28 games in La Liga due to a knee injury. Despite being limited, ter Stegen clocked in 15 clean sheets in domestic competition. His injuries prompted Barca to sign Wojciech Szczesny out of retirement. Nonetheless, Barcelona won La Liga with a 28-4-6 (W-D-L) record and also lifted the Copa Del Rey while falling in the Champions League semifinal to Inter. With ter Stegen set to miss a significant number of games, the team is covered with Szczesny and Joan Garcia, who is joining the club from Catalan rivals Espanyol on a €25 million deal. Ter Stegen joined Barça in 2014 for €12 million and has been the team's primary No.1 since 2016. In his time with the club, the German has made 422 appearances and won 17 trophies. Barca will return to action on July 31 in a friendly match against FC Seoul in the South Korean capital.
