Explained: Why Marc-Andre ter Stegen tensions could stop Barcelona signing top attacking target
La Blaugrana want to move on from German keeper Ter Stegen digging in his heels Lookman represented by the same agency Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Barcelona's attempts to sign a new attacker have hit multiple roadblocks this summer. Nico Williams' decision to stay in Bilbao, rumours linking Luis Diaz to Bayern and the ongoing haggling over Marcus Rashford's future have provided little hope for La Blaugrana. Lookman has latterly emerged as a possible option for the Spanish giants, as it is believed Atalanta will accept an offer of less than €50 million (£43m/$58m) for the 27-year-old. However, the Nigerian star is represented by the same agency as ter Stegen, potentially scuppering negotiations. THE BIGGER PICTURE The fractious fallout between ter Stegen and his club of more than 11 years has rumbled on through the summer. The initial fallout came after the signing of Joan Garcia, who is the presumptive favourite to start in Hansi Flick's team going forward. In fact, recent reports suggest the German international may be third choice behind Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny. The Polish international has signed a new deal that will see him remain at the Camp Nou until 2027. DID YOU KNOW? Ter Stegen is believed to be furious about being forced out of the club, and while rumours of a transfer to Monaco were floated, it the shot stopper rejected those advances. It has been suggested that ter Stegen will leave the club if the remainder of his deal is paid in full. He is under contract until 2028. WHAT NEXT FOR TER STEGEN? It is highly unlikely the club will give into those demands, given their perilous financial situation over the past four seasons. The 33-year-old is seemingly prepared to stay at the Camp Nou and fight for his spot.

Hansi Flick tells Barcelona star he will no longer be a starter amid transfer talk
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has indeed done his bit to help the club try and move on captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer. The Catalan giants have signed Joan Garcia to be their new number one this summer, and are hoping the exit of ter Stegen could free up some space in their salary limit. The 33-year-old has three years remaining on his Barcelona contract, and is one of the best-paid members of the club. He has publicly declared has no intention of leaving Barcelona, and intends to compete for the number one spot with Garcia. AFP7 22/09/2024 ONLY FOR USE IN SPAIN Advertisement The Catalan daily say that Flick held an honest conversation with ter Stegen, explaining that the decision to sign and use Garcia was a strategic one, and that he had faith in the 24-year-old to be Barcelona's number one. He also made it clear that Wojciech Szczesny would remain as number two, and thus ter Stegen would be third-choice. Ter Stegen likely to fight for position The Barcelona manager even went on to say that ter Stegen feels it is the right thing to do, then he should stay and fight for his position. Even so, he was keen to let ter Stegen know with time to make alternative plans, should he desire. Barcelona will not seek out an exit plan for him, but are willing to come to an agreement to terminate his deal and make him a free agent, paying off one of his three remaining years on his deal. Nevertheless, ter Stegen's intention is to remain and fight for his place, and his belief is that if the call is made based on sporting merit, then he will end up as number one. He is also frustrated with the club after stories about his character emerged, feeling they were a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation. Advertisement Difficult decade for ter Stegen Since the pandemic, and the turn of the decade, ter Stegen has had a difficult time of it at Barcelona. Although he was back to his best as Xavi Hernandez secured the La Liga title in 2023, he has also suffered three operations in the last five years. Outside of the 2022-23 season, his performances have also been questioned.

Barcelona star's Serie A links shut down
Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen is not in active discussions with Serie A outfit Inter Milan. That's according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who has on Saturday provided his insight into the situation. Advertisement Links between goalkeeper Ter Stegen and Inter Milan had emerged in the Spanish media over the last 24 hours. This came after chatter was forthcoming that, amid a search for a long-term replacement for the aging Yann Sommer, the San Siro brass had set their sights firmly on Barca's out-of-favour shot-stopper. As alluded to above, though, if the latest word doing the rounds on Saturday evening is anything to go by, then negotiations over any such transfer, as things stand, are not taking place. As per a report from journalist Fabrizio Romano: 'Inter and Barcelona are not in contact for Marc André ter Stegen, same between goalkeeper's camp and Inter. Zero contacts, approaches or talks so far for the German GK to join Inter this summer despite recent reports.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Inter Milan lodge enquiry for Barcelona captain, could table offer soon
There are already developments surrounding a possible departure of Marc-Andre ter Stegen from FC Barcelona. The German goalkeeper, who is expected to lose his starting position following the signing of Joan Garcia, currently prefers to stay at the Catalan outfit. Advertisement However, Barça are eager to offload their captain, and several clubs have started to show serious interest in him. Inter Milan eye ter Stegen Indeed, according to SPORT, Inter Milan, who are planning a change in goal, have enquired about Marc-Andre ter Stegen's situation and may formalise an offer in the coming days. Inter have opened the door for Yann Sommer to leave. The 36-year-old has one year remaining on his contract and has received a significant offer from Galatasaray. The Italian club is willing to sell, looking to save on wages and find a replacement in the transfer market. Ter Stegen is on their shortlist, as they await a final decision from the German goalkeeper. Advertisement So far, Ter Stegen has not spoken to the club about his future. He is expected to return to Barcelona next week for the start of pre-season. The goalkeeper is very upset with the club due to recent decisions and, above all, leaks that he believes were deliberate and have damaged his public image. Destination Italy? (Photo by) He intends to stay and is not open to negotiation at this stage, but remaining at the club seems unlikely given that he would be the third-choice goalkeeper. In recent weeks, clubs such as Galatasaray and AS Monaco have approached him to discuss his future, but the German has not responded. Advertisement The case of Inter Milan may be different, as it is a top-level project, competing in the Champions League and capable of winning trophies. Barcelona open to granting a letter of freedom Barcelona would like Ter Stegen to leave and is open to granting him a letter of freedom, allowing the club to avoid paying the remaining three years of his contract. A free transfer could make it easier to find him a new destination, although few top-level clubs are currently in the market for a goalkeeper. Inter are one of the exceptions. At this point, Inter have only made initial contact with Barcelona and are aware that the player could leave without a transfer fee. The next move will depend entirely on Ter Stegen himself. Barcelona plan to meet with him starting next Sunday to try to reach a mutual agreement for his departure.
