8 Delaware bakeshops serving great doughnuts, according to report
It doesn't need to be National Donut Day, National Brownie Day or National Macadamia Nut Cookie Day to crave an as-good-as-homemade-or-even-better treat. The website Family Destinations Guide highlights eight bakeshops with "outrageously delicious donuts'' in the First State. These Delaware spots are known for their crave-worthy treats, whether traditional temptations like old-school doughnuts and cupcakes, or trendy bites like you might salivate over on TikTok. Here are the places that made the radar of author William Phillips. Which ones have you tried? And what would you add? Super Doughnut: Krispy Kreme honors Delaware's most famous resident with Hungry for Heroes doughnuts Serpe & Sons Bakery, Elsmere 1411 Kirkwood Highway. 302-994-1868; Don't look for Dubai chocolate doughnuts here. "What makes Serpe's special is their unwavering commitment to quality over trendiness,'' writes Phillips. Generations have queued up at Serpe & Sons to stock up on their tried-and-true favorites, such as old-fashioned glazed or jelly doughnuts. It's not a well-kept secret, as the bakery known for Italian specialties has been named in Delaware Online's Readers Choice Awards. Sleeping Bird Doughnuts, Talleyville 4001 Concord Pike. "Sleeping Bird takes a 'quality over quantity' approach that pays off in every single bite,'' writes Phillips. When Sleeping Bird opened, we sent an eager Matthew Korfhage to see what all the fuss was about. "Those early crowds were all there to secure scratch-made doughnuts that some called the best in Delaware even before Sleeping Bird had a dedicated doughnut shop,'' he observed, indicating that the doughnuts were first sold by husband-and-wife owners Zach DeLong and Leigh Ann Tona at the their Wilmington coffee shop. As Phillips points out, here, the owners let "the donuts be the true stars of the show,'' adding that they aren't just doughnuts but "joy rings that make your day better.'' According to Korfhage, "Sleeping Bird's doughnuts ... are made with sweet and buttery brioche dough – a Rhode Island specialty but a unicorn-caliber rarity in these parts. 'The doughnuts are painstakingly scratch-made, rested and proofed for hours until the dough is just right, kneaded and rolled out into sheets and then stamped into doughnut shapes. The remaining dough, the holes and scraps, are then worked and rolled out yet again.'' Look for rapidly rotating, inventive flavors and a dedication to freshness. Now, more about that coffee shop ... Sleeping Bird Coffee, Wilmington 3111 Miller Road, Wilmington. This is the OG doughnut destination for Sleeping Bird. Phillips was struck by the building's aesthetics: "The Spanish-influenced architecture with its distinctive stucco walls and arched entryways adds character before you even step inside. The moment you enter, your senses are greeted by the heavenly combination of fresh coffee and sweet dough.'' In addition to your morning joe, you'll also find biscuits, brownies, scones and more. Hill Donut Co. & Pancake House, Brandywine Hundred 1845 Marsh Road.302 308-3182; This is the place to go to get over a hangover. I mean, pancakes, french toast and doughnuts under the same roof, served all day? The company also has a location in Mullica Hill in South Jersey, and offers brunch and catering. What did Phillips have to say? "Hill Donut Co has mastered the classics without any need for flashy gimmicks or trends. Their donuts represent everything great about traditional American donut-making.'' Brioche doughnuts range from traditional glazed to flavors like banana brulé or candied bacon. Mochinut Delaware, Newark 133 E. Main St, Newark.(302) 525-6217; This is a chain so if you fall in love, you can also find them elsewhere. These doughnuts are available in a wide assortment of flavors like mango, matcha, banana milk, churro and yogurt. There are 25 options in total, according to Mochinut's website. Mochinut doughnuts are known to be stretchy and chewy as they're made with rice flour. The mochi doughnut originated in Hawaii and is a mix of American doughnuts and Japanese mochi. "It's a perfect example of how food can bridge cultures and create something entirely new and wonderful,'' Phillips says. Sandy Pony Donuts & Acai Bowls, various locations Dewey Beach: 1905 Coastal Highway 5, Dewey Beach; (301) 325-8783 Bethany Beach: 115 Garfield Parkway Unit 2; Bethany Beach Bethany Beach Drive-Thru: 32919 Coastal Highway, Bethany Beach; visit (302) 829-1002. Phillips distinguished the Dewey Beach location: "What makes Sandy Pony special is their made-to-order approach that guarantees maximum freshness,'' writes Phillips. "Each donut is fried on the spot and then customized with your choice of toppings and glazes.'' More doughnut options: 'Redneck Nachos': Look at wild food for Delaware State Fair 2025, plus mac burritos Sink your teeth into one of 24 doughnuts such as the blueberry pie (blueberry glaze, powdered sugar and graham crackers), Yabba Dabba Doo-Nut (Fruity Pebbles with glazed honey), cookies and cream (Oreo crumbles) and Strawberry Stallion (strawberry glazed with powdered sugar). Sandy Pony Donuts are handmade to order, and customers can also order ahead for pickup. A & R Bakery, Middletown 701 N. Broad St.; 302 285-0863; This Dutch Country Farmers Market find is a destination for Amish baked treats. "Their donuts follow traditional Amish baking methods, creating treats with depth of flavor that's increasingly rare,'' Phillips writes. You will find a wide variety of fruit and other flavors, as well as baked goods such as fritters, cakes and cream pies. Pasqualini's Bakery, Rehoboth Beach 37560 Atlantic Ave., Rehoboth Beach; (302) 227-2111, Yelp folks rave about the ice cream cakes and sticky buns at this beach town bakery. So, what about the doughnuts? Think traditional. "The classic varieties shine brightest here – each one executed with precision and care,'' Phillips writes. Ex-Kraft Heinz executive Adam Butler joins Second Nature Brands as CEO
Second Nature Brands, the US-based snacks and treats business that has bolstered its portfolio through M&A, has named Adam Butler as its new CEO. Former Kraft Heinz executive Butler, who will take on the role at the CapVest Partners-backed company in August, replaces Vic Mehren. He has been CEO at the Kar's Nuts trail mixes brand owner since 2019. Butler most recently headed up Insignia International, which previously traded as Flagship Food Group until a name change last year, and had also engaged in M&A through assets such as La Tortilla Factory and Young Guns. Butler said of his appointment: 'Second Nature Brands has a strong portfolio, a talented team, and a clear vision for the future. I look forward to building on the strong foundation Vic has laid and working with the great team to realise the company's ambitious growth plans." In a statement, Mehren was credited with taking Second Nature Brands from a $190m business to a 'snacking leader with a modern portfolio of brands, expanded operational scale, and a strengthened foundation for growth'. Backed by CapVest since 2022, current sales were put at around $500m. Second Nature Brands struck a hefty deal last year for the Voortman cookies brand bought from US food peer JMSmucker for $305m, along with a factory and 300-odd employees. Voortman cookies sales were put at $65m at the time. In other transactions, Michigan-headquartered Second Nature Brands acquired Sahale Snacks from Smucker the previous year for $24m, and in 2022, the company snapped up Brownie Brittle. 'We've built something truly special - an incredible team, a values-driven culture, and a business that's positioned to keep winning,' the departing Mehren said. 'I'm proud of what we've achieved together and confident that now is the right time to pass the baton. Adam is the right leader to take SNB into its next chapter, and I'm excited to support him through a smooth transition." Mehren will assist Butler in a transition process through the remainder of July. Butler spent more than 17 years at Kraft Heinz, including a period before the 2015 merger of Kraft Foods and HJ Heinz. He was president of Kraft Heinz's Canada business before leaving for Insignia, and also held the same role at the US snacks and drinks business. Ecclefechan tarts recipe
These are traditional tarts named after the town of Ecclefechan in the Borders. We like to serve them as a welcome treat in the rooms for guests staying with us overnight. Many say they are a great alternatives to mince pies, but we think they are delicious year round. Makes 8 For the shortcrust pastry • 250g plain flour• 65g pasta flour• 100g caster sugar• ½ tsp salt• 155g unsalted cold butter, cubed• 1 egg, plus 1 yolk For the filling • 120g melted butter• 200g light brown sugar• 2 eggs• 40ml yuzu juice• 75g sultanas• 75g raisins• 50g mixed peel• 120g glacé cherries, chopped• 60g flaked almonds• Zest of 2 oranges • Read more restaurant reviews and recipes from our food experts 1. Preheat the oven to 130C fan/gas 2. To make the pastry, pulse the dry ingredients and butter in a blender until you get a breadcrumb texture. Mix the egg yolk, egg and 25ml water in a separate bowl. Gradually add just enough of this wet mix to the dry mix while you pulse the blender for the dough to come together in a ball (you might not need to use all of the wet mix). 2. Roll out the dough to the thickness of a pound coin. Put it into 10cm tart cases. Line the pastry cases with nonstick baking paper and baking beans or rice. Bake until golden brown (about 15 min), then remove from the oven and turn it up to 160C/gas 4. 3. Meanwhile, make the filling by mixing the ingredients with a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Remove the paper and baking beans or rice from the the tart cases and divide the mixture between them. Be careful not to overfill them — they will bubble up in the oven otherwise. Bake for 17 min, or until the top of the tarts feels spongey to touch. 4. Carefully remove the tarts from the tins while warm, then allow to cool on a wire rack. Serve once Tsappis is the chef-owner of Killiecrankie House,

I tested Fab lolly dupes from Aldi, Asda and Iceland – the winner is cheapest and tastes identical to the big brand
PARENTS up and down the country will be stocking up their freezers with treats guaranteed to keep their kids happy on a hot summers' day. The Fab's a winner in many households but as the cost of living rises, a box of six will now set you back around £2.50. 5 Their popularity has prompted a few supermarkets to create their own dupes. But do they taste as good as the childhood favourite? Lynsey Hope finds out. Nestle Fab Strawberry Ice Lollies £2.50 for 6 41.6p each Per lolly: 75 calories, 2.5g fat, 10g sugar A real bit of nostalgia here - these lollies were just as good as I remember from childhood. I did wonder if the chocolate coating had been reduced - I certainly remember them having more chocolate and sprinkles. But the pink and white sections tasted fresher and fruitier than some of the dupes. I particularly liked the strawberry flavour and at just 75 calories per lolly, they're not too indulgent to give the kids as a treat. Taste: 5/5 Value: 3/5 Total score: 8/10 Iceland Sprinkle Lollies £1.45 for 6 24.1p each Per lolly: 51 calories, 1g fat, 9.4g sugar 5 Smaller than the real deal, but taste wise the Iceland ones were a pretty good copy of the original Fab. The strawberry and vanilla flavoured parts tasted almost identical. There was a decent amount of chocolate and sprinkles on top. The kids loved them. They are also lower in calories, fat and sugar than the branded Fabs so a healthier option for children too. You'd be mad not to buy these instead. Taste: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Total score: 10/10 Aldi Gianna's Ice Blitz £1.45 for 6 24.1p each Per lolly: 51 calories, 1g fat, 9.4g sugar 5 Identical in size and price to Iceland's lollies, you'd have a hard job telling them apart. But taste wise they were a little less fruity than both the Fab and the other dupes, especially the strawberry part of the lolly. They are shorter, but thicker than the branded lolly. However, Aldi's lollies were lower in calories, fat and sugar and the best bit - they are 17.5p cheaper per lolly than the Fabs. Taste: 3/5 Value: 4/5 Total score: 7/10 Asda Strawberry Sprinkle Lollies £1.90 for 6 31.6p each Per lolly: 65 calories, less than 0.5g fat, 14g sugar Asda's budget-friendly lollies had a fresh strawberry taste and lashings of chocolate and sprinkles on top. They are still a little smaller than the Fab with a sweeter taste, but they went down a treat with my children. Whilst they are not as cheap as Iceland and Aldi's lollies, at 31.6p a lolly, they still offer a good saving on the branded options. In fact, they are 10p cheaper per lolly and 60p cheaper per box. I'd buy these again. Taste: 4/5 Value: 5/5 Total score: 9/10 How to save money on your supermarket shop THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop. You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they've been reduced. If the food is fresh, you'll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time. Making a list should also save you money, as you'll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket. Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too. This means ditching "finest" or "luxury" products and instead going for "own" or value" type of lines. Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they're misshapen or imperfect. For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50. If you're on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too. Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

CRUNCHY YOGHURT BITES: This recipe from Tesco real food is a great one to do with kids. You'll need an empty ice-cube tray, then sprinkle cereal to cover the base. You can use granola, crunchy cornflakes or anything in your cupboard. Next, spoon in Greek-style yoghurt to cover the cereal and top each cube with a few pieces of chopped fruit. Try raspberries, blueberries or mango. Freeze for one or two hours until solid before enjoying. CHOCOLATE BARK: If you love the combination of peanut butter and chocolate, this recipe from Sainsbury's is for you, and costs just 54p a serving. Melt 370g of chocolate in a bowl over a pan of water, then pour over a tray lined with baking paper. Soften 125g of peanut butter for 30 seconds or so in the microwave, then spoon it over the melted chocolate. You can use a fork or toothpick to create a swirling patter between the two. If you fancy a bit of texture, sprinkle a handful of salted popcorn over the mixture, before popping in the fridge for an hour to set. FROZEN DATE: This tasty Tesco Real Food recipe is better for you than most sweet treats — and it is just 12p a serving depending on the cost of the dates.
