Hot weather in Pittsburgh remains on Sunday as storm chances loom on Monday

Sunday morning begins with slightly above-normal temperatures across most of Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia, with temperatures that have struggled so far to drop below 70°F in the Pittsburgh metro area overnight. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos Today will be another hot one with southwest winds aiding our warmup with highs reaching the lower 90s. High temperatures on July 6, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Our region will be fixated within a flattening ridge of high pressure and Tropical Storm Chantal moving ashore to the Carolinas, which will amplify sinking air aloft, leaving us with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and overall dry conditions. Despite air temperatures reaching the low 90s today, dew points holding steady and relative humidity dropping as temperatures heat up should keep heat index values out of the danger zone, largely in the mid to upper 90s. Individuals should still stay well hydrated while being outdoors, and those sensitive to the heat should take frequent breaks or avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day. One more hot afternoon is expected Monday ahead of a trough moving in from the northwest by early evening. This trough will be forcing a decaying cold front in our direction, which will lead to scattered showers and storms developing along and ahead of the boundary. High temperatuers and rain chances in the region on Monday KDKA Weather Center Expect development to occur by 1-2 p.m. in our northwest Pennsylvania counties before activity progresses south and east through the mid-late afternoon and early evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, storms will be capable of producing microbursts with localized wind gusts up to 60mph, sub-severe or small hail, and very heavy rain. Moisture levels in the atmosphere are projected to be on the upper end to near daily record max levels by early evening, which will support a heavy rain threat with storms. Isolated 1-2" amounts are possible, which could cause flash flooding. By Monday night into Tuesday, this cold front should move into the Laurel Highlands/Ridges and begin to fall apart over this area by Tuesday morning. The remnant boundary will likely induce some showers and storms Tuesday afternoon and evening, especially from Pittsburgh and points southeast. Generally, dry conditions are likely from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon, but our next system will approach by Wednesday evening with a low chance of storms. Types of storm threats we could see on Monday afternoon and evening KDKA Weather Center More scattered storms are expected Wednesday night and Thursday as a slow-moving trough moves across our region. We will likely keep an unsettled pattern going into the end of the week with daily low afternoon storm chances through Saturday, but not all locations will see rain every day. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center Temperatures will largely remain above normal with highs in the mid to upper 80s and lows in the mid to upper 60s. 7-day forecast: July 6, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Pittsburgh in for a dry and comfortable 4th of July and a hot weekend

High pressure has settled into our region this morning and will linger through the day, delivering fair weather for the holiday. There are some clouds in our southwest zones this morning, but these will move out after sunrise, with mostly sunny skies this afternoon. High temperatures on July 4, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Temperatures will rise out of the 50s and 60s this morning to the mid-80s this afternoon. Fair weather is expected for those viewing fireworks later this evening, with temperatures falling toward the low 70s by midnight along with light winds. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos By Saturday, as high pressure moves east and winds shift to the southwest, we expect a warmer air mass to move in from the southwest. Our region will be fixated within a ridge of high pressure and a potential tropical system moving ashore to the Carolinas Saturday into Sunday, which will amplify sinking air aloft, leaving us with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and overall dry conditions. High temperatures on July 5, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 80s to near 90, with the most likely days to see 90°F+ highs on Sunday and Monday. Dew points will be elevated during the early morning hours, but drop in the afternoon thanks to drier air mixing aloft, which should help prevent heat indices from reaching hazardous levels. Individuals should still stay well hydrated while being outdoors, and those sensitive to the heat should take frequent breaks or avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day. High temperatures and heat index over the weekend and into next week KDKA Weather Center One more hot afternoon is expected Monday ahead of a decaying band of showers and storms moving in from the northwest by early evening. Gusty outflow winds and locally heavy rain will be possible with any storm, but widespread severe weather is not expected. The system that brings the rain chance Monday evening should dissipate just south of our area Tuesday and Wednesday, with potentially a remnant storm chance during peak heating both days. Another system with higher levels of moisture and better rain chances may approach by the end of next week. 7-day forecast: July 4, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Pittsburgh could see isolated thunderstorms before a dry and comfortable 4th of July

Thursday morning begins on a seasonably mild note across all of Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia. Skies are mostly clear to partly cloudy, with more clouds and even a few isolated showers around our I-80 counties. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos These clouds and showers are part of a weak but fast-moving upper-level disturbance and cold front that will move across our region later today. High temperatures and rain chances on Thursday, July 3 KDKA Weather Center The strongest lift and jet stream winds with this system will likely pass northeast of Pittsburgh into Central Pennsylvania, but this will still be close enough to give us a chance for some isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Sufficient instability and some wind shear will support a risk of hail and strong downburst winds with one or two cells that are really able to pulse up. Timing for potential severe weather KDKA Weather Center Storm coverage will diminish as the front passes by this evening, and with a loss of daytime heating. Low temperatures on Thursday, July 3, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Overnight into Friday, skies will clear out and temperatures will be seasonable for the Fourth. No weather issues are expected for those who are doing outdoor activities or watching fireworks. High temperatures on the Fourth of July KDKA Weather Center By Saturday, as high pressure moves east and winds shift to the southwest, we expect a warmer and more humid air mass to move in. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 80s to near 90, with the most likely days to see 90+ highs on Sunday and Monday as well. The heat dome that builds in this weekend will not be as strong or long-lived compared to the one last week, so this stretch of 90s will be brief and eventually capped off with a chance of storms late Monday afternoon into Tuesday. As always, any summer storms will be capable of producing downburst winds and small hail. Our pattern will remain slightly unsettled with daily low storm chances into the middle of next week. 7-day forecast: July 3, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Pittsburgh will have mostly dry weather through Memorial Day

It should be another pleasant, if not unseasonably cool, day today with highs hitting the mid-60s and lows down in the low 40s. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos The daily average for today is 74° for the high and 53° for the low. This type of weather isn't that rare at this time of the year, but it certainly isn't common. The past week is in the top 20 (barely) when it comes to looking at the record book and the coolest starts. The most exciting weather event today may be some very patchy fog. Besides that, we should see plenty of sunshine in the morning hours with clouds rolling in for the afternoon hours. We will be on the northern edge of a mid-level disturbance that will push the clouds into our area. To our northeast, a weak cool front will try to move through as what we call a 'backdoor' cold front. Conditions on Sunday, May 25, 2025 in the Pittsburgh area KDKA Weather Center It just means the front arrives moving from the northeast to the southwest. The boundary is expected to stall out along the snow belt off Armstrong and Indiana County, along Westmoreland County. If you see any rain today, that would be the area most likely to see any. Right now, the rain chance looks low. The most likely time to see an isolated shower is between 2 p.m. through 9 p.m. Again, most, if not everyone, will be dry. The rain chances for Memorial Day look even lower than today's chance for rain. You'll be dry and it'll be warmer too. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center Highs on Memorial Day should hit the low 70s. Morning lows will be similar to this morning, with a number of communities dipping into the 30s. Memorial Day will see plenty of sunshine. Conditions on Memorial Day 2025 KDKA Weather Center Our next rain chance comes on Tuesday as a mid-level low sweeps into our area. Right now, it looks like we should just expect showers with little to no storm development on the leading edge. The highest chance to see storms over the next week will come on Friday with a fast-moving system that sticks around on Saturday, bringing more rain. At least it will be warmer with temperatures in the 50s for morning lows. Highs will just be near 70 degrees, though, over the next weekend. 7-day forecast: May 25, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

The dry and comfortable weather in Pittsburgh continues through the weekend before rain returns

Cool conditions have settled into the Upper Ohio Valley this weekend as high pressure settles in behind a frontal passage. While temperatures are cool and winds are light enough in spots to support patchy frost, that should quickly become a distant memory as a light westerly, warm and dry wind is expected for Saturday afternoon and evening with ample sunshine. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos This should allow afternoon temperatures to max out in the low to mid-70s. Overnight into Sunday morning, a weak frontal boundary will approach from the northwest. This will really act more like a wind shift boundary and ultimately reinforce the dry, comfortable weather for Sunday. After morning lows in the mid to upper 40s, highs should reach the mid to upper 70s for most spots in the afternoon and evening. The impact of potential wildfire smoke across Ohio and Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center We will be watching for a band of wildfire smoke to move across Western PA between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday. This smoke shouldn't lead to major air quality concerns, but it is attributed to the first wildfires of the season that have erupted in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. By Monday, our whole weather pattern will begin to shift as attention turns to an approaching upper low that is currently over the Gulf Coast states. That system will move north, leading to an increase in clouds Monday afternoon and evening, followed by showers Monday night and Tuesday. High temperatures expected on Sunday, May 11, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Since the atmosphere will be very saturated on Tuesday, we expect quite a bit of cloud cover and slow temperature decrease with height, which should limit the instability for thunderstorms. On Wednesday afternoon and evening, we may see a few more storms as temperatures aloft cool a bit along with the intrusion of some drier air. However, severe weather is not a concern. On the backside of this system, conditions look rather pristine for some areas of dense fog on Thursday morning due to saturated low levels and very light winds. This should give way to partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions on Thursday as a short-lived ridge settles in. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center Our next weather system of interest will move in by next Friday, into Saturday. A surge of very warm, moist, and potentially unstable air will overspread our region. This, coupled with some stronger winds aloft, could set up the potential for some severe storms. We are still a week out, so some minor adjustments are possible, but there is a fairly strong signal in the model guidance already that we will be moving into a more active pattern. 7-day forecast: May 10, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!
