'I Know What You Did Last Summer' stars talk cameos, ending and possible sequel
Spoiler alert! We're discussing the surprise cameos and end-credits scene of the new "I Know What You Did Last Summer." If you haven't seen the film and don't want to be spoiled, stop reading now. Welcome back, Helen Shivers and Karla Wilson. The new "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (in theaters now) is full of big swings and huge surprises, including major cameos from two fan-favorite characters: Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as Helen from the original film, and Brandy returns as Karla from the 1998 sequel. Gellar's appearance comes first, during a creepy dream sequence. While in police custody, Madelyn Cline's Danica Richards has a vision of Helen, who was memorably killed by the Fisherman in the 1997 movie, as a manifestation of her guilt. In the dream, Helen holds a hook and tells Danica that the death of her fiancé Wyatt (Joshua Orpin), the killer's first victim, was her fault. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox "There was no way that Sarah was going to get out of doing this," director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson quips, and stresses that she and Gellar were telling the truth when they previously declared that Helen is really dead. "None of us lied! Nobody lied!" But for Robinson, bringing Gellar back made sense, given the spiritual link between Helen and Danica. "Danica is kind of the Helen Shivers of this film. So it was very exciting for me and for Sarah to be able to bring those two characters together in this kind of David Lynchian dream sequence, where Sarah could chew scenery and be her most iconic Helen Shivers self," Robinson says. Cline "screamed internally" in excitement when she learned she'd share a scene with Gellar, who was "hilarious" and "kind." She also remembers the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum being "so involved" during shooting. "She was there with her kids, and it was a really special experience because you can tell she also deeply cares," Cline adds. "She wanted to be there just as much as we did." The cameo is another big surprise that Freddie Prinze Jr. has been keeping under wraps, the other being his character Ray's heel turn. He says he and Gellar, whom he married in 2002 after they met on the original "I Know What You Did Last Summer," have known she would appear in the film since before the script was completed. "The even cooler secret than Ray being the killer was knowing that the fans were going to get something (with Helen)," he says. What happens in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' end-credits scene? The second surprise cameo comes during an end-credits scene, in which Karla (Brandy), Julie James' (Jennifer Love Hewitt) roommate in 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," watches a news report about the events of the film in shock. Julie then stops by to reveal that she has received a new threatening note along with a photo of Julie and Karla that has Karla's face crossed out. Julie says she needs help, and Karla says she's in, setting up a sequel that would seemingly involve the two of them teaming up. Hewitt says it was "so special" getting to work with Brandy again for the first time in nearly 30 years. "She and I just kept looking at each other going, 'Is that you? Oh, my God, what are we doing here?' " "Karla, for Julie, is probably the most special person in her life, because she's the one person who is still here (and) knows everything that she's been through, but is also her ride or die," Hewitt adds. "She's not scared of anything. She's probably the one character that matches Julie's gumption." Robinson says she didn't want to bring Karla back just for the sake of a cameo, but she thought it was appropriate that the Fisherman's return would lead the characters to reunite. Julie "has moved through and past her trauma in a way where she doesn't really want to be reminded of it," the director explains. "She is solitary, is a loner, doesn't want to bring anyone into her mess, and that is the life and the world that she's created for herself. So for me, something needed to bring Julie back to Karla, and I really liked that the events of this film push those two friends back together." Will there be an 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel? Despite the end-credits scene directly leading into a sequel, another "I Know What You Did Last Summer" movie hasn't been confirmed. Whether a sequel happens will depend on how well the new film performs. But Robinson says she has a "clear" idea of what that next movie would be and is ready to make it happen, should she be given the opportunity. "Hopefully, that is something that people want," she says. Hewitt, too, confirms she'd like another go as Julie James. "I'm definitely down for it," she says. "That would be so fun, everything working out as it should."

Jennifer Love Hewitt reveals she has ‘not talked' to Sarah Michelle Gellar since she was 18
Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar haven't talked in many summers. The actress, 46, revealed that she has not kept in touch with her 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' co-star, 48, since starring in the 1997 slasher together. 'I honestly don't even know what that was or how that all came to be,' Hewitt said about speculation of a possible feud between her and Gellar. 'I just think people don't want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?' 11 The cast of 'I Know What You Did last Summer' poses at the film's premiere in 1997. Fred Prouser 'I haven't seen Sarah,' she explained. 'Literally, we've not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That's why it's so funny to me. People were like, 'Say something back.' And I'm like, 'What am I going to say? I've not seen her.' On my side, we're good. I have no idea where this is coming from.' Hewitt portrayed Julie James in the 1997 movie and the 2025 version. In the original 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' Gellar played Helen Shivers, the beauty queen who was murdered. 11 Jennifer Love Hewitt attends the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Hollywood Premiere on October 8, 1997. Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images Ryan Phillippe starred as Barry William Cox, who was also killed the first time around, while Gellar's husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., reprised his role as Ray Bronson in the sequel. Gellar also addressed rumors of bad blood after she and Hewitt didn't pose together for pictures on the red carpet of the sequel's premiere Monday night. 'For everyone asking — I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt, who is fantastic in the movie. I was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately, JLH didn't come to the after-party,' the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star commented on Instagram Wednesday. 11 Sarah Michelle Gellar at the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Hollywood Premiere on October 8, 1997 WireImage 'If you have ever been to one of these, it's crazy,' continued Gellar. 'I sadly didn't get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn't change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately, some things happen only in real life and not online.' While on the carpet, Gellar posed for pictures with her husband of 23 years and her former 'Buffy' co-star, Seth Green. The 'Ringer' alum also snapped pictures with the film's director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, and the slasher's new star, Madelyn Cline. 11 Freddie Prinze Jr. at the 1997 premiere. Still can't believe …… years later (no need to date myself) I got to walk the red carpet at another premiere of @ikwydlsmovie,' Gellar captioned her original Instagram post. 'Still starring the most handsome man I know @realfreddieprinze, but this time directed by my best friend @jennkaytin and written by Jenn and @samlansky I love this movie sooooo much and this cast!! Hewitt had previously addressed the online chatter in December. 'I just heard that there's this whole thing where they think that Sarah and I were fighting or something. There's all these things out there,' she said on Tommy DiDario's 'I've Never Said This Before' podcast. 11 Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Jennifer Love Hewitt in the OG slasher. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection 'I've really enjoyed going and trying to read the stuff now and be like, 'What are people saying about when we did the movie before, now, all of that stuff?'' Hewitt continued. 'Somebody the other day was like, 'Yeah, I think Julie made sure that she was killed because girl actresses don't like to work with girl actresses.' I was like, 'What are you talking about?'' 'I was 18,' the 'Party of Five' alum said. 'They were not taking script notes from me guys. Like what are you talking about?' That same month, Gellar was asked if Hewitt would return for the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel. 11 Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. at the 2025 premiere. Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/MEGA 'I have nothing to do with that,' she responded before walking away from the interviewer. Gellar later clarified the situation on her Instagram Stories. 'Aspiring actors please note: This 'deer in the headlights' reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month,' she wrote beneath a photo from the film's set. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' holds a special spot in Gellar's heart, as she met Prinze Jr., 49, while filming the slasher, but the two didn't start dating until 2000. 11 Sarah Michelle Gellar poses at the premiere of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' At Monday's premiere, the 'Scooby-Doo' actor spoke about Gellar still being a part of the new film in some capacity. 11 Seth Green and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/MEGA 'We've all seen it, yeah. We're really proud of the movie. She saw it before I did,' Prinze told People. 'I wasn't able to go to the first screening, so all I had was a bunch of questions, like, 'Did I suck? How was it?'' 'She's like, 'No, you did great. The movie's great. Everybody's going to love it,'' he said of his partner's reaction. 'So hopefully they do.' 11 The LA premiere of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.' Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency / BACKGRID Prinze Jr. also addressed her character's iconic death in the franchise. 'People love that character so much, and I genuinely mean this: I think it's one of the best death scenes in the history of horror films. Because it showcased hope more effectively than any of its peers, more effectively than any horror film I can remember. And I've seen almost all of them,' he said. 'So yeah, man, to get to be here with her again is awesome, because she's always going to be a part of that.' Joining Prinze Jr., Hewitt and Cline, 27, in the sequel are Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon. 11 Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Jennifer Love Hewitt. ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Prinze Jr. said the new group 'earned the baton.' 'I didn't have to pass anything,' he admitted to 'Good Morning America' on the carpet. 'They're so much better than I was at their age. It's not even funny. I love this cast so much, I respect their work so much, and it was a pleasure to get to work with them.'

Startling revelation in American Idol exec's murder: Robin Kaye, husband dead for 4 days, cops didn't enter house
. In a startling revelation in the mysterious murder case of American Idol executive Robin Kaye, and her husband, Thomas Deluca, it has now been found that they lay dead for at least four days inside their Los Angeles home after suffering multiple gunshots when they probably stopped a burglar. The burglary was reported and police came to the house but never went inside the property. Authorities received a burglary complaint on July 10, but never actually went inside the property, as there were no noticeable signs of forced entry. The suspect, identified as Raymond Boodarian, 22, might have been inside the house when the police officers initially visited the property. 'A confrontation ensued, which resulted in the suspect taking their lives,' the LAPD said, explaining the scenario that might have unfolded before the shooting, while it remains unclear when exactly the couple died or whether they were still alive when authorities first visited the home that day. Officers carried out a welfare check at the property on Monday, which is when they discovered the bodies. Kaye was found in the pantry, and Deluca was in the bathroom, both with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities discovered a trail of blood leading to the front of the property and entered the home through a shattered glass sliding door at the back, as the front door was locked. Boodarian was arrested without incident on July 15. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Have Arthritis Avoid This Food jointrehabcenter Learn More Undo He was formally charged with two counts of murder as well as one count of residential burglary involving a person on July 17. The murder charges carry special circumstance allegations, including multiple murders and committing murder during a burglary, along with firearm allegations. Boodarian was previously accused of threatening his family. 'I know at one time he tried stabbing his mom, I believe, or got violent with a knife,' a neighbour of Booadarian was quoted as saying by Fox News. 'I just know he was troubled. I know he was on medication, on and off medication… he needed help,' the neighbour added. Kaye previously expressed concerns about rising burglaries in the neighborhood and sought additional security measures, as per Kris Herzog, a former police officer. Kaye worked on around 300 episodes of 'American Idol' between 2009 to 2023. Her other works also include The Singing Bee, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as multiple Miss Universe Specials.

See Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Stun in Rare Red Carpet Moment
and Freddie Prinze Jr. stepped out for a rare public date night. The longtime couple are known for projects like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and She's All That, but folks may have forgotten they first met on the set of the 1997 cult film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Even though the duo (who married in 2002 and share daughter Charlotte and son Rocky) don't often display their love for the public, they had to make an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere for the 2025 movie reboot of the same name on July 14. Dressing in color-coordinated looks for the event, Sarah and Freddie (who is reprising his role as Ray Bronson in the 2025 I Know What You Did Last Summer film) had fans screaming when they turned up for the carpet. As they posed for the cameras, they looked just as in love as when they first got together years ago. And if that's not enough, Sarah even got in on a joint Instagram post comparing the couple attending both movie premieres, just 28 years apart. "History repeating itself!" the caption read. "Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. at the I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER premiere in 1997 and again in 2025." When fans caught Sarah and Freddie's rare public display of affection online, they all bombarded them over how much they still love the two years later. "They seem like the real deal. They both look even better than they did back then," one person wrote in the comments. "... And they are still going strong ❤️," another declared. "Favorite couple EVER 🥰🙌❤️," a different follower replied. Even though Sarah isn't making a reappearance as Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer, Freddie was ecstatic to be able to step into Ray's shoes once again. "You have no idea what's changed, what's the same," he told People in July 2025. "You're excited to show what you think you're better at, you know what I mean? You hope they notice it. It was all those things." We love this for them! You Might Also Like 67 Best Gifts for Women That'll Make Her Smile The Best Pillows for Every Type of Sleeper Solve the daily Crossword
