Real Madrid ‘name their price' for Rodrygo with Arsenal interested in transfer for Brazil star, 24
REAL MADRID have reportedly named their price to allow Rodrygo to leave the club this summer. Rodrygo, 24, has been linked with an exit from the Bernabeu during the summer transfer window, with Arsenal one of the clubs rumoured to be keen on a deal. 1 The Brazilian winger struggled for game time towards the back end of the season at Madrid, playing just 17 minutes across Madrid's last six La Liga matches of the campaign. While he has also left on the bench for the entirety of Los Blancos 3-1 Club World Cup win over Mexican side Pachuca at the weekend. New boss Xabi Alonso put those absences down to taking "some time that was good for him". Swirling rumours suggest that the 33-time Brazil cap could be looking for a way out, with Madrid open to letting him go for the right price. And Spanish outlet Cadena SER have claimed that the Champions League giants will ask for around £77million to sanction a sale. It's thought that Madrid would want to reinvest that cash in a new midfielder, having already brought in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen in the early stages of the window. The Athletic report that Arsenal are convinced they can offer Rodrygo an attractive sporting project that would allow him to play in his preferred position of left wing more regularly. While they also claim the Gunners are prepared to wait and see if he is definitely open to leaving Real Madrid, but won't wait too long with other targets for that position on the radar at the Emirates Stadium. 'He has a lot of good ideas' – Dean Huijsen expresses delight at working with Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid
Real Madrid have started a new era this summer, with Xabi Alonso now installed as the club's newest head coach. And another addition to the first team has been Dean Huijsen, who arrived earlier this month from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. Huijsen, who impressed on his Real Madrid debut in the 1-1 draw against Al Hilal, has already established himself as a regular starter. And upon speaking to the club's official media channels (via Cadena SER), he spoke of his happiness at having made the move earlier this summer. Advertisement 'For me it's a dream. I think it's a dream for every child to play for Real Madrid. It's the best club in the world and I'm very proud and very happy to be here.' Dean Huijsen delighted to be working with Xabi Alonso Huijsen spoke on his early impressions on life at Real Madrid, and he also expressed his happiness at working under Alonso. 'There is a very good group here and the truth is that the dressing room is very united. We are very happy to have Xabi Alonso here as well. I think he has a lot of good ideas and we are going to have good years together.' Image via Getty Images / Goal Huijsen looks to be an excellent signing for Real Madrid, and it would be no surprise to see him be an undisputed starter throughout the 2025-26 season despite only being 20 years of age. He will be competing with Raul Asencio, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and David Alaba for two positions, or three if Alonso opts to bring back the system he used during his Bayer Leverkusen tenure. There is a lot of excitement within Real Madrid for this Alonso era, but it won't be until the start of the 2025-26 season that he can give a proper impression of how he wants his side to play. The Club World Cup will only be a small taster.

Spain plans to extend smoking ban to bar and restaurant terraces
Spain is moving forward with plans to extend smoking bans to public spaces, including restaurant terraces and outdoor areas in bars, the southern European country's health minister announced on Thursday. More than a year after Spain's left-wing government coalition passed its anti-smoking plan, Spain's Health Minister Monica García announced that "a concrete draft of the bill" had been completed in an interview with Cadena SER radio. García added that the prospective ban would also apply to electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco devices, and not just traditional tobacco. García said she hoped that the ban — which must still be reviewed by the government's council of ministers, as well as the Spanish parliament's lower house — would place Spain "at the forefront of the fight against smoking". School playgrounds, university campuses, company vehicles, as well as outdoor festive events and public transport shelters, are among the other places where the ban would be imposed. As part of its anti-smoking plan, the Spanish government has also been working on a range of measures, including boosting resources available to individuals who wish to quit smoking, as well as introducing a tax hike on tobacco and similar products. Spain has joined other European countries which have considered introducing similar laws following a recommendation by the European Commission to extend smoking bans to further public areas and include electronic cigarettes. In September 2024, French authorities announced they were working on a proposal to ban smoking at outdoor restaurant and café terraces. Italy has mulled a similar law since 2023, but no progress has been made on a nationwide rule, bar a ban in Milan and a proposed temporary testing period in Rome's 1st municipality, which encompasses most of its historic centre. Outside of the EU, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in August 2024 that the government was looking into more rigid rules on outdoor smoking at pubs and restaurants, in a bid to lower preventable deaths linked to tobacco use. Opponents of the legislation argue that it would be too excessive and negatively impact small businesses, which could lose customers if the ban were extended to outdoor areas.

Ukrainian ex-politician shot dead outside Madrid's American school
An unidentified gunman or gunmen shot and killed former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov on Wednesday morning outside the gates of the American School in Madrid's affluent neighborhood of Pozuelo, a source close to the investigation said. Police received the call about the shooting at 9:15 am (0715 GMT) local time, the Madrid police told Reuters, without identifying the victim. Radio station Cadena SER said the man was taking his children to the school when he was shot. Portnov was a senior aide to Ukraine's former President Viktor Yanukovich who was ousted in 2014.

Former politician and aide to ex-Ukrainian president shot dead in Madrid
A man who served as an aide to a former Ukrainian president has been shot and killed in Madrid, local authorities have said. An unidentified gunman - or gunmen - shot former politician Andriy Portnov outside the gates of the American School of Madrid in the Pozuelo area of the Spanish capital on Wednesday morning, according to a source close to the investigation. Police received a report at 7.15am local time and rushed to Calle America, where Mr Portnov is believed to have been taking his children to school, radio station Cadena SER said. Emergency service vehicles and a police cordon were pictured at the scene. He served as a senior aide to Ukraine's former president Viktor Yanukovich before he was ousted in 2014. The pro-Russian leader was driven out by Ukraine's 2014 Orange Revolution - and has been living in exile in Russia ever since. Since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, crimes have been committed against several high-profile Russians and Ukrainians in Spain, which has large ex-pat populations from both countries. In November and December 2022, six letter bombs were sent to targets across the country, to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid, as well as its US counterpart. A 76-year-old retired Spanish civil servant was jailed over the offences after his social media searches suggested he was sympathetic towards Russia's invasion. In February last year, a Russian pilot who defected to the Ukrainian side was found dead with gunshot wounds in the car park of his apartment near Alicante.
