Former politician and aide to ex-Ukrainian president shot dead in Madrid
A man who served as an aide to a former Ukrainian president has been shot and killed in Madrid, local authorities have said.
An unidentified gunman - or gunmen - shot former politician Andriy Portnov outside the gates of the American School of Madrid in the Pozuelo area of the Spanish capital on Wednesday morning, according to a source close to the investigation.
Police received a report at 7.15am local time and rushed to Calle America, where Mr Portnov is believed to have been taking his children to school, radio station Cadena SER said.
Emergency service vehicles and a police cordon were pictured at the scene.
He served as a senior aide to Ukraine's former president Viktor Yanukovich before he was ousted in 2014.
The pro-Russian leader was driven out by Ukraine's 2014 Orange Revolution - and has been living in exile in Russia ever since.
Since Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, crimes have been committed against several high-profile Russians and Ukrainians in Spain, which has large ex-pat populations from both countries.
In November and December 2022, six letter bombs were sent to targets across the country, to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid, as well as its US counterpart.
A 76-year-old retired Spanish civil servant was jailed over the offences after his social media searches suggested he was sympathetic towards Russia's invasion.

In April that year, a Russian businessman linked to the country's Novatek gas company was found dead with his wife and daughter, having all sustained stab wounds.
In February last year, a Russian pilot who defected to the Ukrainian side was found dead with gunshot wounds in the car park of his apartment near Alicante.

Adams on Cuomo independent bid chatter: ‘I don't focus on what other candidates are doing'
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Friday brushed off talks of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo launching an independent bid, saying he's only focused on 'what I am doing.' 'I don't focus on what other candidates are doing. I focus on what I am doing,' Adams said during an appearance on CNN's 'The Lead' with Jake Tapper. 'I came from behind when I ran in 2021, I was head of 13-point deficit from the leading opponent in the race,' he told Tapper. 'And as you see, we were successful. I know I did campaign, I know how to speak to voters.' The mayor added, 'I'm a working class mayor. I'm a blue collar mayor, and I would resonate in the residents of this city. They see I'm one of them.' His comments come days after New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani seemed to edge out Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary — though results in the city's ranked-choice voting system are not final. Cuomo conceded to Mamdani, 33, after Tuesday's ballots were counted. Adams launched his own independent bid following the election. When asked if he's considered following in the mayor's footsteps, Cuomo told CBS News on Wednesday that he is 'assessing that landscape.' Mamdani also dismissed the chatter, saying he's 'not at all' concerned about that possibility. Asked about the self-proclaimed democratic socialist's perceived victory and what it means for the general election, Adams slammed the state lawmaker — who has lobbied for Palestine to become its own U.S.-recognized state — for being a 'pro-Hamas' candidate. 'I'm not competing against him only for what he's done and praising Hamas,' he told Tapper, a after highlighting the ways he believes Mamdani has backed the U.S.-designated terrorist organization amid its war with Israel. 'I'm competing against him because this is not a socialist city, and that much of what he's promising to people, which I think is really deplorable, people that are struggling like my family did of living without the means that we needed.' Adams earlier in the week also accused his opponent of being disingenuous. 'He's a snake oil salesman,' Adams told 'Fox & Friends' on Wednesday. 'He would say and do anything to get elected.' Tapper questioned the incumbent mayor on reports that he made a deal with the Trump administration to ramp up immigration enforcement in the Big Apple, following the Justice Department's decision to drop federal corruption charges against him. 'I never met the president prior to him running for office, never met in my life. He talked about the unfairness of the charges while he was on the campaign trail. And the first time we met, he also articulated the unfairness and the Justice Department used the same system that determines if someone should be indicted,' Adams said. 'They use that system to determine that I should not have been indicted, and the charges were dropped with prejudice,' he added. The mayor has denied the allegations in the past, even after several DOJ officials resigned following the Trump administration's move to drop the corruption charges.

Russian drone strike on Odesa kills married couple, injures 17 people, Ukraine says
KYIV, Ukraine -- Russian drones struck the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa overnight, killing two people and injuring at least 17, Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday. A drone slammed into a residential tower block in the city, causing damage to three floors and trapping residents, emergency services said. The two killed in the attack were a married couple, according to regional Gov. Oleh Kiper, who added that three children were among the injured. There was no immediate comment from Moscow. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, over 40 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight and on Saturday morning over western Russia and Kremlin-occupied Crimea. Long-range drone strikes have been a hallmark of the war, now in its fourth year. The race by both sides to develop increasingly sophisticated and deadlier drones has turned the war into a testing ground for new weaponry. Ukrainian drones have pulled off some stunning feats. At the start of June, nearly a third of Moscow's strategic bomber fleet was destroyed or damaged in a covert Ukrainian operation using cheaply made drones sneaked into Russian territory. Smaller, short-range drones are used by both sides on the battlefield and in areas close to the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line. The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine said in a report published Thursday that short-range drone attacks killed at least 395 civilians and injured 2,635 between the start of the war in February 2022 and April 2025. Almost 90% of the attacks were by the Russian armed forces, it reported. More than 13,300 civilians have died and over 34,700 have been injured in the war, the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said a June 11 report.

Fact Check: Unpacking claims video shows over 500 construction workers detained by ICE in Texas
Claim: A video shared on social media claimed that over 500 construction workers being detained by ICE agents at Texas job sites in late June 2025. Rating: In late June 2025, a 10-second video circulated online purportedly showing a mass detention of construction workers by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents gained traction on social media. For example, on June 25, 2025, one Instagram post (archived), which accumulated over 449,000 views as of this writing, stated: "BREAKING: Over 500+ construction workers — mostly Hispanic — have been detained by federal agents in Texas while simply showing up to work. Workers are reportedly being rounded up at job sites and taken to holding camps. This all happened in just the last 48 hours." (occupydemocrats/Instagram) Snopes readers contacted us about the claim, with one reader emailing to ask whether the "video of construction workers detained by ICE" was "accurate or not." The video accompanying the post showed a large number of workers gathered in what appeared to be a temporary tent structure at a construction site. A caption embedded in the video asked: "so, if all these construction workers are detained by ICE, who's doing the construction?" The same video had been circulating on other social media platforms including TikTok (archived) and Threads (archived). However, Snopes' investigation found that while the video appeared to be authentic footage of a construction site gathering, it was miscaptioned and did not show an ICE detention operation in late June 2025. Snopes has not yet been able to confirm who filmed the footage, but there was no evidence the clip was the product of artificial intelligence (AI) software or other digital manipulation. The same video had been circulating on Instagram prior to the June 25 claim. For example, one Instagram account posted (archived) the identical footage on June 8, 2025, with a Spanish-language caption that translated to "Here are the workers detained by ICE." (usalatinnews/Instagram) That earlier post received over 531,000 views, predating the recent posts by more than two weeks and indicating that the video was not tied to any verified enforcement action within the past 48 hours, as recently claimed. Snopes found no publicly available evidence supporting the claim that a mass ICE raid involving more than 500 workers took place in Texas during the time period described in the post. While ICE has carried out workplace enforcement actions at construction sites in recent months, the largest confirmed (archived) operation occurred in Tallahassee, Florida, where "100+" workers were arrested on May 29, 2025, according to the agency. In Texas, the largest publicly documented (archived) construction-site raid involved 25 arrests at job sites in South Padre Island and Brownsville on June 4. We reached out to ICE to ask whether its agents had conducted any operation involving the detention of 500 or more construction workers in Texas during late June 2025. An ICE spokesperson responded directly to Snopes via email: "The video is not related to any activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement." Based on visual clues in the video—such as safety signage, worker attire, and the industrial scale of the operation—the footage may have been recorded at the Port Arthur LNG construction site in Texas. This liquefied natural gas export terminal, being built by Bechtel Construction Service for Sempra Infrastructure, regularly holds large safety meetings and worker gatherings that could account for the scene shown. Photos shared on Facebook by both Bechtel (archived) and Sempra (archived) show similar large tented structures used for events and meetings at the Port Arthur LNG site as well as the exact same safety signage, supporting the likelihood that the video was filmed there. Snopes reached out to Sempra Infrastructure and Bechtel to confirm whether the video was filmed at the Port Arthur LNG site and whether any immigration enforcement actions took place at or near the site during the relevant period.
