Ter Stegen missed seven months after suffering a knee injury last year, which forced him to have surgery before making his return in May. He previously underwent back surgery in 2023, which sidelined him for over two months. "This time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks," said Ter Stegen, who has been at Barcelona since 2014, winning six LaLiga titles and a Champions League with the club. "Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear." Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen to miss up to three months due to back surgery

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to be out for three months after announcing he will undergo back surgery. The Athletic previously reported that Barcelona were keen to sell the Germany international this summer to make space for other signings, given they are operating above their La Liga-imposed salary limit. Ter Stegen has always been determined to stay at Barca. Advertisement However, the 33-year-old has now confirmed he will be unavailable for the foreseeable future due to the procedure. La Liga's rules state that when a player is injured for more than four months, the club can use 80 per cent of their salary space to register a new player on their books — which happened last season when summer signing Dani Olmo was initially registered following a long-term injury to Andreas Christensen. But Ter Stegen's estimated timeframe out injured falls under the required amount for another player to be registered in his place. A statement posted by the German to social media read: 'Dear cules, I carry the colors and the jersey of FC Barcelona with great pride, whether on the field or off it, in moments of success as well as in difficult times. Today is a tough day for me on a personal level. 'Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately, I am not free from pain. After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the fastest and safest way to fully recover is through back surgery. 'After my last back operation, I returned to the field after 66 days, almost 2 months; this time, the doctors believe that about three months will be necessary as a precaution to avoid any risks. 'On an emotional level, it hurts me a lot not to be able to support the team during this time, but fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable, and the path to return is clear. I will keep you updated on my recovery, and I want to sincerely thank all of you, dear culés, for always being by my side. Don't worry, I'll be back!' The goalkeeper missed the majority of the 2024/25 campaign due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in September, which led to Barcelona signing Wojciech Szczesny the following month. Advertisement Ter Stegen returned to partial training at the end of March and made his first appearance since the injury in May. However, following the signing of Joan Garcia from Espanyol, in addition to Szczesny signing a new two-year deal with the club in July, Ter Stegen was first on the list of the club's desired exits before the end of the transfer window The goalkeeper still has three years left on his Barcelona contract and is due to receive a substantial amount over that time after agreeing to defer wages during the Covid-19 pandemic. With Ter Stegen's absence, Barcelona only have one goalkeeper registered in La Liga and eligible to play, Inaki Pena. Pena, 26, is expected to leave the club before the end of the transfer window, while the Spanish club still have to register Garcia and Szczesny. Ter Stegen, who joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, has made 422 appearances in his 11 seasons at the Spanish club.

Barcelona cancels pre-season trip to Japan at short notice

Madrid, July 24 (UNI) FC Barcelona's pre-season plans are in ruins after the club was forced to cancel its visit to Japan at short notice due to a contractual problem with the tour organizers. The Barca squad was due to fly to Japan on Thursday morning ahead of a game against Vissel Kobe on Sunday, before travelling to South Korea to face Seoul FC and Daegu FC. However, the Japanese leg of the tour has now been cancelled and the South Korean part is in the balance. "FC Barcelona announces that it has been forced to suspend its participation in the match scheduled for next Sunday in Japan due to a serious breach of contract by the promoter. However, the Club will consider readjusting the South Korean portion of the summer certain conditions are met by the promoter," explained the club in a statement. The cancellation of at least part of the tour is a blow to Barcelona's economy, with the cash-strapped club due to receive an important injection of around 15 million euros for playing the games, but it is also a sporting blow as Hansi Flick's side will have to look for new rivals at short notice as Flick looks to prepare for the new La Liga season. Barca's only other pre-season game that is currently scheduled is against Como on August 10, before the new La Liga campaign starts in Mallorca on August 16. UNI XINHUA RKM

Barcelona's pre-season friendlies in South Korea to go ahead as per plans

Following the unexpected cancellation of their pre-season friendly in Japan, FC Barcelona's tour of South Korea will go ahead as originally planned. According to SPORT, the matches in Seoul and Daegu will be played without issue, and the team will travel to South Korea in the coming days. The update came after the outlet contacted the Korean-based event company Allive, which has been subcontracted by D-Drive, the firm Barça had officially announced as the organiser of their 2025 Asian tour. Allive reassured the publication that all preparations are in order, and there are no foreseeable issues preventing Hansi Flick's squad from facing the two scheduled South Korean clubs. Korean leg will go as planned Despite the chaotic start to the tour, sparked by a 'serious breach of contract' that led to the cancellation of the match against Vissel Kobe, Barcelona are determined to move forward. (Photo by) In South Korea, local organisers and fans are already preparing for the arrival of the team, while the players continue their training routine at the Ciutat Esportiva. Unless complications arise that are beyond Allive's control, both fixtures in Seoul and Daegu will be held as planned. This brings some much-needed stability to what has otherwise been a rocky start to the club's pre-season. Barcelona remain deeply frustrated by how the Japan leg of the tour collapsed, especially considering that Vissel Kobe had made the friendly official weeks in advance. There is ongoing internal discussion within the club, and some voices are even considering legal action to make it clear that the blame for the cancellation does not lie with Barça. For now, however, the focus shifts to South Korea, where Barça will aim to gain match fitness and continue their pre-season preparations under Hansi Flick without further disruption.
