MediaTek to grow India investments, expand share in flagship smartphone chipset market: Executive

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese fabless chipmaker MediaTek said it will grow its investments in India, and work with smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expand its market share in the booming premium segment this year. 'We want to improve our flagship market worldwide, including India. People in India are becoming rich, so they can buy a better phone. We see this (premium segment) as very important. So, we will enlarge our investment in India and work with our key OEM partners to bring their products together with our flagship chipsets,' Thomas CH, senior director (product marketing), MediaTek, told ETTelecom in an interview. 'That is our top priority this year. We will see the premium market growing in India,' he added. The company, however, did not divulge further details. Citing a study from Counterpoint Research, the executive said MediaTek has been leading India's smartphone chipset market for 20 quarters. In the most recent January-March 2025 quarter, MediaTek led with a 45% share, followed by its US-headquartered rival Qualcomm with a 32% share. Meanwhile, Indian consumers' demand for high-end products, including electronics and smartphones, is unabated. In the January-March quarter of this year, the ultra-premium smartphone segment, categorised at ₹45,000 and above, grew by 15% year-on-year (by volume) while the average selling price (ASP) has seen an increase of 11% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) post-COVID, Counterpoint said. The top executive said that the global smartphone market has stabilised (by volumes), and is growing at 1-3% every year, but the revenue is expected to increase due to the sales of expensive devices. So MediaTek will keep investing in flagship chipsets, mainstream chipsets, and the whole portfolio. This is because OEMs are looking for wide range of SoC support. We look forward to the smartphone market getting bigger because, from the product point of view, everyone will have a better smartphone in the future said. The Rick Tsai-led chipset vendor is further working with homegrown handset makers, such as Lava, for 5G smartphones priced as low as ₹8,000, and budget-friendly 4G models. 'We are also helping to accelerate the adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in India. Last year, HFCL unveiled its 5G FWA Indoor CPE powered by the MediaTek T750, which delivers 5G speeds right out of the box. We power key household connectivity devices from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio,' Anku Jain, managing director (MD) of MediaTek India , told ETTelecom during the interview. MediaTek is also bullish on India's growing automobile industry, particularly the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where it provides solutions for Kinetic Green Flex and Kinetic Green E-Luna X1. Last year, Jio Things and MediaTek collaborated on a 4G Smart Android Digital Cluster and Smart Module for two-wheeler EVs. MediaTek also works with Indian automakers designing four-wheel vehicles, with some vehicles using MediaTek's infotainment solutions, including Tata Punch EV and Skoda Slavia. The Hsinchu-headquartered company is focusing on enhancing its chipsets' photography, gaming, and efficiency. Thomas said MediaTek has 'invested a lot' in accelerated processing unit (APU), and its in-house neural processing unit (NPU), to help large language models (LLMs) run locally on-device.

Indias per user data use to hit 62 GB/month by 2030, from 32 GB now: Report

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): Data traffic per smartphone user in India is projected to grow to 62 GB per month by 2030 from current levels of 32 GB per month which is still the highest in the world, according to Ericsson Mobility report The report stated that this significant growth will require a need for robust 5G infrastructure in the country. The report further adds that as of 2024, 4G remains the dominant subscription type with 53 per cent of the subscribers. It is forecast to decline to 230 million subscriptions by 2030, as users continue migrating to 5G. The sharp increase is driven by growing 5G internet penetration, affordable smartphones, and a rising appetite for video and digital services across urban and rural markets. Underpinned by strong population coverage, increasing data consumption, and accelerating Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments, 5G penetration will continue with robust growth. By December 2024, 5G subscriptions in the country reached 290 million, representing 24 per cent of total mobile subscriptions. This figure is projected to climb to around 980 million by 2030, accounting for 75 per cent of all mobile subscriptions. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said, "At Ericsson, we are proud to support the country's digitalisation based on the strong 4G and 5G infrastructure that we have set up in the country together with our partners, the communication service providers, that is enabling connectivity and driving inclusive growth in the country." On the global front, the 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.3 billion by 2030, and will make up two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions. It is projected that Western Europe will have the highest 5G subscription penetration in 2030 at 93 per cent, followed closely by North America at 91 per cent and the Global Capability Centres (GCC) at 90 per cent. The report adds that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly becoming a significant selling point for smartphones. Efforts are being made to expand AI beyond the high-end segment to enable the services for a broader market. With the growth of AI applications and model complexity, tasks will be computed both on the device and in the network. This will put uplink capabilities and latency more into the focus of both application service providers and communication service providers, thereby adding to 5G subscriptions, it said. India has made large-scale mid-band deployments and reached around 95 per cent of its population covered by 5G network by 2024 end. According to the government data, since its launch in October 2022, 5G services have been rolled out in all states/UTs across the country and presently it is available in 99.6 per cent of the districts in the country.

New Delhi: The Data traffic per smartphone user in India is projected to grow to 62 GB per month by 2030, up from the current level of 32 GB per month, which is still the highest in the world, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. The report states that this significant growth will necessitate robust 5G infrastructure in the country. It further adds that, as of 2024, 4G remains the dominant subscription type, accounting for 53% of subscribers. However, it is forecast to decline to 230 million subscriptions by 2030 as users continue migrating to 5G. The sharp increase in data traffic is driven by growing 5G internet penetration, affordable smartphones, and a rising appetite for video and digital services across both urban and rural markets. Underpinned by strong population coverage, increasing data consumption, and accelerating Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) deployments, 5G penetration is expected to continue growing robustly. This figure is projected to climb to around 980 million by 2030, accounting for 75% of all mobile subscriptions. Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India, said, "At Ericsson, we are proud to support the country's digitalisation, based on the strong 4G and 5G infrastructure that we have set up in partnership with communication service providers. This is enabling connectivity and driving inclusive growth in the country." On the global front, 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.3 billion by 2030 and will make up two-thirds of all mobile subscriptions. Western Europe is projected to have the highest 5G subscription penetration in 2030 at 93%, followed closely by North America at 91% and the Global Capability Centres (GCC) at 90%. The report also notes that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly becoming a significant selling point for smartphones. EMR June 2025: 5G and FWA accelerating Gulf region's digital ambitions

5G subscriptions to top 2.9 billion globally by the end of 2025 and 5G networks forecast to handle 80 percent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2030. In the Gulf, 5G is expected to constitute 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions, totaling 86 million in 2030. Adoption of FWA is propelled by the demand for high-speed broadband alternatives and national ambitions for smart cities. Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) continues to grow in appeal to communications service providers (CSPs) around the world, with the ability to offer speed-based tariff plans – enhanced by 5G capabilities – proving particularly attractive, the June 2025 Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) Mobility Report shows. FWA is projected to account for more than 35 percent of new fixed broadband connections, with an expected increase to 350 million by the end of 2030. 5G FWA plays a crucial role in expanding broadband access, especially in areas where traditional wired infrastructure may be less feasible. On 5G subscriptions, the June 2025 Ericsson Mobility Report forecasts subscriptions to top 2.9 billion globally by the end of 2025 – about one third of all mobile subscriptions. The 5G subscription forecast for the end of 2030 remains at 6.3 billion. 5G networks handled 35 percent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2024, with forecasters expecting the figure to top 80 percent by the end of 2030. Service providers in the Gulf region are transitioning from traditional telcos to digital service providers, enabled by extensive 5G deployment and the adoption of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing and edge solutions. Network slicing, supported by programmable networks and open APIs, is expected to be a cornerstone in delivering customized and performance-sensitive services. From 2024 to 2030, mobile subscriptions in GCC countries are expected to grow at an annual rate of 3 percent, reaching 95 million. By the end of the decade, 5G subscriptions are expected to comprise 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions, totaling 86 million. FWA adoption is driven by demand for high-speed alternatives to fixed broadband and national initiatives aimed at reaching underserved areas and supporting smart city ambitions. Through commentary, insights and customer/partner case stories, the June 2025 EMR highlights the ability of 5G Standalone (5G SA) and 5G Advanced to create monetization opportunities for CSPs globally based on value delivery rather than data volume. The report highlights how CSPs are pursuing new commercial opportunities by offering differentiated connectivity services to consumers, enterprises and public authorities. Use cases include broadcast/video production, point of sale systems, events/arenas, gaming, fixed wireless access, virtual private networks, and enterprise productivity. Deeper dive articles include: Study on how GenAI will impact future mobile network traffic.
