AI is changing our world. At what point will it change our reality?

We aren't hapless figures in a false simulation, despite efforts to make that our new reality. A Pakistani crowd set fire to a Hindu temple. Chinese researchers experimented with a bat in a wet lab. An election worker donning a gay pride pin shredded election ballots. Palestinians are gratefully accepting U.S. aid in Gaza. All these events were caught on video, yet none is real. These videos are a result of a Time magazine analysis of Google's new Veo 3 artificial intelligence video model, a powerful new AI tool making 8-second videos that are uncomfortably realistic. AI videos have existed for years now, but this is on an entirely new plane, one that proves we've climbed out of the uncanny valley and summited a higher, scarier peak. While these videos are still clockable as AI, the technology will only get better, making it even more difficult to determine what's real and what's fake. In an age where misinformation already runs rampant, the line separating fact from fiction has become a blur. Advancements in AI will only erase it further by proliferating false realities until we find ourselves in a post-truth society. Post-truth refers to a situation where facts are no longer important in contemporary political and public debate. The concept is not so much used to suggest that the truth does not exist, but that facts have become secondary to our political point of view, according to ScienceDirect. By the time our social media feeds are littered with AI videos of political candidates saying things they never said and fake news moments pushing agendas to sway public opinion, it will be far too late. By then, the truth, the facts and reality itself will become secondary, a problem we're already seeing in education. Opinion: As a college professor, I see how AI is stripping away the humanity in education A generation of critical nonthinkers A New York article recently dug into AI's place in education and how many students are relying on AI to do all of their schoolwork. Capitalism has turned higher education into a means to an end, the latter being a high-paying job (hopefully). Students have no desire to pursue knowledge; they're fine with letting AI work and think for them. A generation averse to critical thought is primed to fall for AI trickery. It's scary to think that higher education, a place once conducive to the development of critical thought, problem-solving skills and creativity, is being infiltrated by a singular mechanism that undoes its very foundation. And what's to say of these students when they exit the four-year microcosm that is college after cheating their way through? Will pre-med students turn to ChatGPT to diagnose patients? Will future lawyers use AI to summarize cases and form arguments? Opinion: Is it me or ChatGPT? As AI grows smarter, I have a down-to-earth worry ‒ my job. AI not only invades political and educational spaces, but it chips away at our humanity in our most isolated, insular and vulnerable moments. AI therapy gaslights ChatGPT and other dedicated AI therapy chatbots have become a low-cost, accessible option for those seeking mental health assistance as our culture wrestles with loneliness and isolation. But computerized AI is not meant to offer meaningful support for the minutiae of human emotion. Behavior that rests on AI's unfounded ability to grasp our humanity leads to outcomes that range from futile to detrimental. A 14-year-old boy died by suicide after becoming emotionally dependent on an AI chatbot. ChatGPT convinced a man with past mental health diagnoses that he had fallen in love with an AI entity named Juliet. When confronted with the truth, he became violent, resulting in his being killed by police. His father used ChatGPT to write his obituary. Cases like these seem to be more common, paired with less deadly but equally unnerving impacts of AI use, like falling down rabbit holes of spiritual mania and unfounded clairvoyance. They fall prey to confirmation bias and the spiritual psychosis that follows. The false reality spewed by AI becomes their all-encompassing truth. The way AI is discussed makes it seem like this is a necessary outcome, that there is nothing anyone can do to stop people from falling down AI's deadly rabbit hole of misinformation. Technological determinism posits that advancements in technology, including advancements in AI, are an inevitable process independent of human or societal interference. But who exactly benefits from leaving such a dangerous tool of misinformation unchecked? What is gained from blurring the line between fact and fiction? I thought I had an allergy to alcohol when I saw my cheeks flush bright red after a drink, but it turns out there's a unique term to describe my ailment and a GP-approved way to avoid it. When I had my first-ever alcoholic drink, I started to turn red. I never understood the reason behind it, and kept drinking until someone asked me: 'Why are you so red?'. Then I learnt the meaning behind the so-called 'Asian flush', and now I wonder if there's a way to stop it. The ' Asian flush ', also known as the 'Asian glow' is a condition in which a person develops flushes on their neck, shoulders, ears, and in some cases, their entire body after consuming alcoholic beverages. It got so bad that at one point, I even thought I was allergic to booze. ‌ This so-called alcoholic flush comes from an inherited deficiency in the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), as explained by Science Direct. The build-up of acetaldehyde leads the blood vessels to dilate, which is where the 'Asian flush' comes from. ‌ As reported by Alcohol Change UK, not only does one's face become red, but it is also accompanied by nausea, headaches, itching, vomiting and a fast heart rate. It was also found that those intolerant to alcohol have a higher risk of affecting their overall health, including cancer and other diseases. My symptoms have triggered my insecurities and limited my drinking habits and I know I'm not alone. Dr Farah Ahmed, a NHS GP told the Mirror: "[Asian flush] affects an estimated 30-50% of East Asians globally, and with people of East and Southeast Asian heritage making up about 1.5% of the population in England and Wales (2021 Census), it's likely that tens of thousands in the UK are affected." Is there a cure for 'Asian flush'? To keep it plain and simple, no, there isn't a cure for 'Asian flush'. The only solution to avoid the flush from ruining your night is to stop drinking at all, experts have warned. However, there are remedies, which involve taking medication, such as Zantac, Pepcid and Tagamet, although they can impose some health risks. Dr Farah Ahmed added: "Some young people use over-the-counter medications like Pepcid (famotidine) to reduce facial redness, but this only masks the visible symptoms and does not prevent the harmful internal effects, including an increased risk of alcohol-related cancers such as oesophageal cancer." The sudden death of television actress and model Shefali Jariwala, popularly known as the ' Kaanta Laga girl," at the age of 42 due to cardiac arrest has once again stirred public concern over the rising incidence of heart-related ailments in India. While such cases involving young celebrities make headlines, data and doctors reveal a deeper and far more widespread crisis: a growing epidemic of cardiovascular disease affecting Indians – not only rich but also poor in far-flung areas. Heart ailments no more a rich man's disease According to the latest data under the central government's flagship Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) scheme, the maximum number of claims are for an angioplasty procedure that involves putting stents in the arteries of the heart to remove blockages, which could prove fatal. The scheme serves as health insurance for the bottom 40 per cent population of India – who are extremely poor and vulnerable, busting the myth that heart ailment is a rich man's disease. The data shows that a whopping Rs 1051 crore has been spent by way of claims under the scheme so far on the procedure named 'PTCA inclusive of diagnostic angiogram'. This is the procedure to perform angioplasty after an angiography is conducted that shows blockages in one's heart. As many as 1.05 lakh patients across the country have undergone this procedure under Ayushman Bharat scheme, implying a spend of Rs 1.05 lakh per patient. In comparison, chronic haemodialysis, though more common with over 15 lakh cases, has led to a lower cumulative spend of Rs 560 crore. The figures clearly indicate that cardiac procedures, though fewer in number, demand significantly higher financial resources — underlining the scale and severity of India's growing heart problem. In fact, several published studies highlight urban versus rural shift of heart ailments. Urban CHD (coronary heart disease) prevalence climbed from roughly 1 per cent in 1960 to 9–10 per cent in 2016 and rural prevalence went from less than 1 per cent to 4–6 per cent, according to a study titled 'Trends in Coronary Heart Disease Epidemiology in India" published in medical journal ScienceDirect. A 9-fold increase in urban CHD over four decades and around 2-fold in rural areas highlights rapid lifestyle transition. 'Five-fold increase in heart procedures" Cardiologists across India are reporting a dramatic surge in cardiac emergencies, especially among young adults. Dr Asit Khanna, Principal Consultant and Director, Cath Lab and Cardiology, Yashoda Super Speciality Hospitals, Kaushambi, told News18, 'The heart-related procedures at my facility have increased 5-fold in 7 years. It was 50 cases in 2018 (when I joined Yashoda), now it's 250 cases per month." Dr Prashant Pawar, Consultant Cardiology at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, also noted a worrying trend. 'Cardiovascular diseases have increased over the past 5 years. On average between 2016-2020, I used to see around 30 to 40 heart attack cases in a month. Over the past 3-4 years I see around 60-70 heart attacks cases in a month. Out of these heart attacks, 30-40 per cent patients are below 40 years and have blood clots (they have more thrombus)," he said. The picture emerging from these accounts is alarming: more young Indians are suffering from heart attacks, and when they do, their condition is often more severe. Supporting this clinical experience is market data from research firm Pharmarack, which confirms that cardiac drugs are now the top-selling segment in India's pharmaceutical market. The segment has grown at a steady 5-year CAGR of 10 per cent, and antihypertensive medications now make up half of all cardiac-related drug sales. What's more concerning is that categories associated with more serious cardiac complications and hospitalisations are growing in double digits. 'Drug sales patterns indicate a disturbing shift in age trends, with cardiac problems increasingly affecting people in the 30–40-year age group, compared to the 50–60-year age bracket in earlier decades," said Sheetal Sapale, vice president, commercial, Pharmarack. The data shows that the sales of heart failure therapies stood at Rs 717 crore in May 2021, which jumped to Rs 1322 crore in May 2025 — almost doubling in four years. India's 'Silent Epidemic' of NCDs The Apollo Hospitals' Health of the Nation 2024 report labels the spike in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), especially cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as a 'silent epidemic." According to the report, CVD cases in India jumped from 380 lakh in 2005 to 641 lakh in 2015 — and the number continues to rise. Apollo's annual report 2023-2024 shows that in 2019, lifestyle-linked risks such as unhealthy diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity contributed to 27 per cent of India's total disease burden, compared to 21% in 2010. These risks are directly linked to conditions like ischemic heart disease and stroke.
