Royal Sabah Turf Club cup races celebrate the festive spirit

Kota Kinabalu: Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) successfully organised the Harvest Festival Mile Cup and Sprint Cup at the Tambalang Racecourse in Tuaran on June 1. The event was celebrated in a lively atmosphere, full of sportsmanship and excitement.
Advertisement Among the distinguished guests were Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick and Datuk Wong Thien Fook. To mark the occasion, RSTC carried out a symbolic welcoming ceremony, featuring five horses ridden by Bajau riders, known as 'Oriental Cowboys'. This gesture was meant to honour the guests and showcase Sabah's rich cultural heritage. David's Sling secured victory in the 1,600-metre Harvest Festival Mile Cup, while Easylights was crowned champion of the 1,200-metre Sprint Cup. Ewon personally presented the trophies to the Mile Cup winners, adding a special touch to the event, while Wong presented prizes to the winners of the Sprint race. TAWAU: The reluctance of private landowners involved in the Jalan Utara development project to relinquish their land for development purposes has been identified as a key obstacle in expediting the completion of the project. Kukusan Assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal, said she was informed that some parties refused to release their land even though it was the government's responsibility to develop the area. 'However, this is currently being reviewed to speed up the development of Jalan Utara, which indeed has a significant impact on the residents of the Kukusan area,' she told the media on Thursday. According to her, the matter was raised during her meeting with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Ir Shahelmy Yahya, and Kalabakan Member of Parliament, Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi, at his office recently to discuss the development of Jalan Utara, which is crucial for the Kukusan area. During the meeting, she also raised concerns regarding heavy vehicle transportation along Jalan Kalabakan, particularly involving the palm oil industry. Rina noted that while there is no immediate need for a dedicated route, industry players should act more responsibly in their use of other public roads. In the meantime, Rina urged civil servants and all relevant parties to act with integrity and professionalism to ensure that government development initiatives are not hindered by internal weaknesses. 'The public is watching our work…therefore, I hope all parties will uphold integrity and competitiveness in delivering the best services,' she added. Malaysia-China Friendship Run to boost ties in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: A large-scale community running event combining sports and cultural diplomacy is set to strengthen ties between Sabah and China on July 27 with the newly appointed Chinese Consul-General pledging his full support for the initiative. The 2025 Malaysia-China Friendship Run was announced during a courtesy meeting between the Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah and His Excellency Zhu Xinglong, who recently took up his post as Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah President Dr Oh Ei Sun outlined how the event aims to enhance Malaysia-China relations through broad community participation, bringing together people from various sectors of society in a celebration of friendship and cooperation. The friendship run will go beyond athletics, featuring cultural exhibitions and performances that showcase the unique traditions of both Malaysian and Chinese cultures. The initiative represents a novel approach to diplomacy, using sports as a platform to foster mutual understanding and strengthen grassroots connections between the two nations. Oh expressed confidence that the event would help elevate cooperation between Sabah and China to new heights, particularly with the arrival of the new consul-general. The association, which has been promoting people-to-people exchanges since 2012, has previously organised cultural programs and facilitated business connections between Chinese enterprises and local small and medium enterprises in Sabah. PENAMPANG: The annual Kaamatan-Gawai celebration again brought indigenous Sabah and Sarawak businessmen closer in terms of collaboration, cultural exchange and a shared vision for economic progress. Since its inception in 2007, the Kaamatan-Gawai celebration had symbolised unity between the two states, honouring East Malaysia's rich indigenous heritage. KCCI, established in 1996, and DCCI, founded in 2003, first forged ties during the Bumiputera Economic Congress in Kuala Lumpur. That connection laid the foundation for economic cooperation that continues to grow today. In fact, when DCCI was formalising its constitution in 2002, it modelled its structure after KCCI's, a gesture of shared purpose and mutual respect.
