CM Stalin inaugurates Semmozhi expo on Karuna's birth anniversary
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday inaugurated the Tamil Semmozhi exhibition as part of the Semmozhi Naal celebrations. The birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, June 3, is being celebrated as Semmozhi Naal.
The exhibition, which is on at Kalaivanar Arangam, showcases a rare collection of photographs of Karunanidhi, old editions of classical Tamil works, palm-leaf manuscripts giving details about the evolution of Tamil language, literature and civilisation through artefacts showing the antiquity of Tamil civilisation.
An official release said the exhibition has been extended till June 9 so that the public and students from schools and colleges could view it free of cost. The exhibition features include the history of classical Tamil, scripts from the Indus valley and Tamil Nadu symbols, Sangam-era inscriptions, pottery with Tamil inscriptions, details of Thirvalangadu copper plates, hero stone inscription from Keezh Mukkuttoor, Kalaiganr Karuvoolam with digital interactive features, a list of nationalised works of Karunanidhi, etc.
As part of the Semmozhi Naal celebrations, the government will also be organising literary competitions, including oratorical contests, contests on writing poetry, quiz programmes, moral storytelling events, etc.

"Safest state for women": TMC's Kunal Ghosh amid protests over gang rape row
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 30 (ANI): Amid mounting protests over recent gang rape cases in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh on Sunday hit back at Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's remarks against the TMC government, asserting that the state remains one of the 'safest places for women' in the country. Responding to Pradhan's demand to 'free' West Bengal from TMC rule, Ghosh accused the Union Minister of ignoring atrocities against women in BJP-ruled states. This is the safest state for women,' the TMC leader said. The remarks came hours after Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleged that West Bengal under TMC rule was facing a governance crisis similar to the Emergency imposed in 1975. Drawing a parallel, Pradhan said the TMC was carrying forward the legacy of the Congress-era Emergency by eroding constitutional values. '50 years ago, an Emergency was declared to dismantle, tear apart, and disregard the country's Constitution... It is disheartening that the party carrying forward that Congress culture is the Trinamool Congress. It has not yet overcome that mindset,' Pradhan said during a press conference. He slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led government for presiding over a 'dangerous mindset' that, he claimed, is undermining the educational and social foundations of the state. 'Bengal has been a laboratory for women's progress for many years... Whether it is RG Kar Medical College or a law college, it reflects their mindset, even though the head of the ruling party is a woman. What kind of statements are coming from their leaders? This is a very dangerous mindset in a republic,' Pradhan said. The BJP Lok Sabha MP's remarks come amidst ongoing protests and political turmoil in West Bengal following the gang rape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25, as well as the earlier rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024, which had fuelled public outrage and drawn sharp criticism of the TMC's handling of law and order in the state. The Union Minister emphasised the state government's responsibility for campus security, a point of contention as the TMC and opposition parties clash over accountability. 'Security (of educational campuses) is the responsibility of the state government... Bengal used to be the centre of education. Now it needs to be freed from TMC,' he asserted. Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee in the latest row said, 'Yes, incidents do happen. Not all men are like this, but some have a perverted mindset. CM writes to MEA after SL navy arrests 8 TN fishers
Rameswaram: Chief minister M K Stalin has sought immediate diplomatic intervention from external affairs minister S Jaishankar for the release of eight Rameswaram fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan navy in the early hours of Sunday. The eight were among fishermen in more than 300 boats which ventured out to sea from Rameswaram on Saturday. They were allegedly fishing near Talaimannar when they were apprehended for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), and their mechanised boat was seized. In a letter to Jaishankar, Stalin said such arrests, especially during the early days of the resumed fishing season, cause serious disruption to the lives of coastal communities. The CM called for proactive diplomatic efforts to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The arrested fishermen — S Sesu, 39, N Annamalai, 55, N Muneeswaran, 35, V Kalyanaraman, 48, U Selvam, 28, S Syed Ibrahim, 35, K Kanthavel, 67, and B Balamurugan, 24 —were taken to the Lankan naval base at Talaimannar and are expected to be handed over to the Sri Lankan fisheries department. DMK govt installed 11 memorials, 63 statues in four years
Chennai: The DMK govt has installed 63 statues and 11 memorials over the last four years, which is more than double the number of statues erected during the 10 year rule of the previous AIADMK govt. While the DMK govt has installed more than five dozen statues across the state so far, work was underway to construct statues for 28 more leaders and 12 additional memorials, furthering the Dravidian model govt's efforts to preserve and honour the contributions of icons who shaped Tamil identity and history, according to the statement. The statement noted that former chief minister M Karunanidhi was the pioneer in honouring stalwarts. Among the notable structures installed by Karunanidhi was the statue of Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar in 2000 and the govt celebrated 25the anniversary of the statues, recently. Chief minister M K Stalin is continuing the legacy of Karunanidhi by constructing statues for leaders, Tamil scholars and even for leaders from foreign countries who have contributed for the development of Tamil society. Among the statues unveiled by the current govt include Dr B R Ambedkar at the Ambedkar Memorial in Chennai, Col John Pennycuick in England, freedom fighter Anjalai Ammal in Cuddalore and Sir John Marshall, British archaeologist in Egmore. In addition, the house where poet Bharathiyar lived in Varanasi has been converted into a memorial, the statement said.
