Rameswaram: Chief minister M K Stalin has sought immediate diplomatic intervention from external affairs minister S Jaishankar for the release of eight Rameswaram fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan navy in the early hours of Sunday.
The eight were among fishermen in more than 300 boats which ventured out to sea from Rameswaram on Saturday. They were allegedly fishing near Talaimannar when they were apprehended for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), and their mechanised boat was seized. In a letter to Jaishankar, Stalin said such arrests, especially during the early days of the resumed fishing season, cause serious disruption to the lives of coastal communities.
The CM called for proactive diplomatic efforts to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The arrested fishermen — S Sesu, 39, N Annamalai, 55, N Muneeswaran, 35, V Kalyanaraman, 48, U Selvam, 28, S Syed Ibrahim, 35, K Kanthavel, 67, and B Balamurugan, 24 —were taken to the Lankan naval base at Talaimannar and are expected to be handed over to the Sri Lankan fisheries department. The seized boat is owned by Pandityammal, wife of Sesu.

Fishermen association leader J R Jesu Raja said the fishermen did not deliberately cross into Sri Lankan waters. "This is the fourth time they have gone out since the ban ended. We want the Union govt to act decisively and not leave us to repeated protests," he said. Condemning the arrests, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss called for a structured bilateral fishing agreement, and criticised the Tamil Nadu govt for merely issuing letters to the Centre each time such incidents occur.

EAM S Jaishankar begins US visit today: What to expect from the Quad meeting?

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is embarking on a three-day visit to the United States on Monday, June 30. During the visit, Jaishankar will participate in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Quad grouping that will focus on new proposals to advance a common vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar will visit the United States from June 30 to July 2 at the invitation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on June 29 . The Quad foreign ministers' meeting on July 1 would build on the discussions held at an earlier meeting in Washington on January 21, it said. "They will exchange views on regional and global developments, particularly those concerning the Indo-Pacific, and review the progress made on various Quad initiatives in the run-up to the Quad leaders' summit, which will be hosted by India," the MEA said in a statement. It said the ministers are also expected to deliberate on new proposals aimed at advancing a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific. The Quad, comprising India, the US, Australia, and Japan, has emerged as a key group largely focused on peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Jaishankar will also inaugurate an exhibition, titled "The Human Cost of Terrorism", at the United Nations headquarters in New York on June 30. The exhibition will highlight the devastating toll of heinous terrorist acts around the world and the steps taken by the international community to combat terrorism, the MEA said. The Quad has emerged as a key group largely focused on peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The exhibition is seen as an effort to draw global support for India's campaign against cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. Key Takeaways Jaishankar's visit underscores India's proactive role in international diplomacy. The Quad meeting aims to strengthen ties among India, the US, Australia, and Japan concerning regional security. The exhibition at the UN seeks to garner global support against cross-border terrorism, particularly from Pakistan.

India lost jets in Operation Sindoor due to ‘political constraint': Defence attaché to Indonesia

The Indian Air Force lost fighter jets to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor on May 7 because the political leadership had directed that no military establishment across the border was to be attacked that day, The Times of India quoted India's defence attaché to Indonesia as having said earlier this month. A controversy erupted after a purported video of Captain Shiv Kumar's remarks from June 10 surfaced online on Sunday. Following this, the Indian Embassy in Jakarta stated that the Navy officer had only said that India's armed forces serve under ' civilian political leadership ', unlike some neighbouring countries. 'It was also explained that the objective of Operation Sindoor was to target terrorist infrastructure and the Indian response was non-escalatory,' it added. The Indian Embassy also said that Kumar's remarks were 'quoted out of context' and 'the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker'. The officer had made the comments while speaking at a seminar titled 'Analysis of the Pakistan-India Air Battle and Indonesia's Anticipatory Strategies from the Perspective of Air Power' at a university in Jakarta. Kumar's statement came more than a month after Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan's May 31 comments that were seen by some as an acknowledgement of the Indian Air Force's loss of aircraft during the operation. General Chauhan had told Bloomberg that what was important was 'not the jet being down, but why they were being down'. The Narendra Modi-led Union government has yet to officially state the number of fighter jets lost during Operation Sindoor. Kumar made the statement in response to Pakistan's claim of having downed six aircraft, including three Rafales. 'I may not agree…that India lost so many aircraft,' The Print quoted him as having said. 'But, I do agree that we did lose some aircraft and that happened only because of the constraint given by the political leadership to not attack the military establishments'. Kumar added that the tactics were changed after the loss and 'we went for their military installations'. After a video from the seminar surfaced online, the Congress accused the Union government of having 'misled' the country. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a social media pos,t asked why the prime minister was 'refusing' to preside over an all-party meeting to take the Opposition into confidence and why the demand for a special session of Parliament has been rejected. He added: 'First the Chief of Defence Staff makes important revelations in Singapore. Then a senior defence official follows up from Indonesia.' Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed in the shelling. India and Pakistan on May 10 reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following the four-day conflict. The Indian government has maintained that Operation Sindoor targeted only terror camps, intentionally avoiding military installations.
