Guardians break silence on Emmanuel Clase suspension

Yahoo4 days ago
How do the Cleveland Guardians rebound from the Emmanuel Clase suspension?
The Guardians' all-world closer was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave by Major League Baseball, and he will remain sidelined through at least August.
Here is what manager Stephen Vogt had to say, via Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal:
'It stinks, it hurts,' Vogt said. 'It's not something we saw coming, not something that we anticipated. It's OK to be upset, it's OK to be hurting, but we're in this together, and it's just a reminder that this game is fragile, this game is special. And it was just a reminder of, we have to do this together and we're going to get through it, but it's going to be hard.'
Vogt also talked about how the Guardians will lean toward matchup-specific pitching decisions rather than trying to replace Clase with one guy. However, if there is a role worth elevating, it is setup man Cade Smith.
Smith has put together another stellar campaign, going 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA, a 2.11 FIP, 65 strikeouts to 17 walks, and 3 saves over 47 outings and 45 innings. The natural progression without Clase leaves Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Jakob Janis, Erik Sabrowski, and Tim Herrin with even greater responsibility.
The Clase situation also clarifies Cleveland's deadline approach.
Before, it was at least worth looking at soft buys to see if this middling club can sneak into the postseason. But, at 52-54 (with the Detroit Tigers just about out of reach), stuck in the Wild Card cluster, selling feels like the better option.
Maybe some team feels like taking a flier on Clase is still viable, especially if he is eligible for the postseason. But, with so much hanging in the balance, that overly risky move will probably dissuade the market.

History delayed by rain! The MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol suspended for Braves and Reds

Associated Press BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — It was a red flag for Major League Baseball at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night. The Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds was suspended in the first inning because of rain, soaking a record-breaking crowd for the first regular-season game in Tennessee. The plan is to resume the game on Sunday afternoon. The first delay at the historic bullring of a racetrack came after the ceremonial first pitch featuring a pair of Hall of Famers in Johnny Bench and Chipper Jones, joined by NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. The second with one out in the bottom of the first led to the game being pushed back a day, much like a red flag in motorsports. Fans who stuck out the first delay started heading toward the exits before the game was delayed until Sunday. It was an unwelcome detour for the long-planned event mixing baseball and NASCAR. ___ AP MLB: and AP auto racing: recommended Item 1 of 3

After a rain delay, MLB makes history with Speedway Classic

Francona approves of all the hard work. 'When you get outside of the field, it's actually pretty cool,' Francona said. 'The way the stands kind of all face in, the ones they're using, it looks pretty cool.' A record crowd for a Major League Baseball game had to be patient, sitting out a rain delay of 2 hours, 17 minutes that started just after the ceremonial first pitch from a pair of Hall of Famers in Chipper Jones and Johnny Bench with help from NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Michael Waltrip, who raced plenty at Bristol, restarted the festivities by quoting his brother Darrell: 'Boogity, boogity, boogity. Let's play baseball boys!' Advertisement Atlanta went down in order in the top of the first inning. But there was another rain delay after Austin Hays hit an RBI single for Cincinnati in the bottom half. The delay before the start of the game led to the Braves switching starting pitchers. Spencer Strider, who grew up in nearby Knoxville, got a bigger ovation than Reds starter Chase Burns, who is from Hendersonville and played at the University of Tennessee. The Reds stuck with Burns despite the delay. Advertisement Strider warmed up, but the Braves chose not to risk his third start in this situation coming off a second elbow surgery. 'I can tell you how excited he was, and I know how he's crushed,' Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said of Strider during the Fox broadcast. On a day fans were encouraged to start showing up at noon, stands that were packed pregame were spotty when the game finally started. The MLB Speedway Classic was first announced nearly a year ago as part of Commissioner Rob Manfred's push to take MLB to places where baseball isn't played every day live. MLB played a game at the 'Field of Dreams' movie site in Iowa in both 2021 and 2022. Alabama, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, too. Now it's time for Tennessee, which has teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLS but no MLB team even as a group chases an expansion franchise for Nashville. This game mixes the rich racing history of both Bristol, which hosts a pair of NASCAR races each year, and Tennessee. Organizers threw a party both inside before the gates opened and inside once fans were allowed inside. Fans had a party zone featuring a 110-foot Ferris wheel, race cars painted in MLB team colors with food trucks, live music, pitching tunnels and batting cages, a chance for photos with the Commissioner's Trophy, and Clydesdales outside the historic racetrack. Inside, star Tim McGraw performed and was joined by Pitbull. Players stood in the back of pickup trucks with their numbers emblazoned on the side and rode around the half-mile bullring racetrack. Some used their phones to document the moment. For introductions, the Braves and Reds walked between a pair of cars decked out in Atlanta and Cincinnati colors. Advertisement Then, the tarp came out as rain that had been falling around Bristol much of Saturday turned heavy and delayed the start. Anthopoulos said the players loved the pregame experience. 'Honestly, my first thought I can't believe they did all this for one game,' Braves first baseman Matt Olson said of his first visit to Bristol. 'To be able to set all this up, get a playing surface ready, set the stands up in order to have the proper viewing, it's pretty incredible.' The Reds, chasing an NL wild-card berth, split the first two games in this series with Atlanta. The rubber match will be a part of history as the first Major League Baseball game played in the state of Tennessee. Pitcher Andrew Abbott showed up Saturday afternoon at Bristol wearing a cut-off version of a NASCAR race suit. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, Abbott said he wanted something to wear in for a special game. 'I grew up around NASCAR,' Abbott said. 'Just went on eBay and found a couple options, and luckily that was the one that arrived in time. I had a couple of backups. I know who Rusty Wallace is too, so I actually do know the backstory behind it.' More than 85,000 people might not create the noise the usual race cars do, but Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said there's a big bag of ear plugs available in the Braves' clubhouse. 'I don't know if I've ever been around this many people,' Snitker said. Advertisement MLB didn't try to sell every ticket inside the speedway that drew 156,990 for the Battle of Bristol college football game in 2016. The track with a racing capacity of 146,000 could host 90,000 or more even with sections blocked off. Officials announced Monday more than 85,000 tickets had been sold — topping the previous paid attendance of 84,587 set Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees. A batter will have to clear 400 feet to hit anything out of center field, 375 in the alleys and 330 down each base line. Pulling a ball down the line raises the prospect of a ball bouncing off the racetrack beyond the outfield wall. Olson wouldn't mind that being a first for him. 'We want to win the game, but it'd be cool to hit one where you've never hit one,' Olson said.

Naylor has RBI double in 8th inning, Guardians beat Twins 5-4 for 4th straight win

Bo Naylor had an RBI double in the eighth inning, José Ramírez and Daniel Schneeman homered and the Cleveland Guardians extended their winning streak to four with a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Schneeman had three hits, including a drive into the right-field stands to lead off the third inning. Ramírez tied it at 4 with a two-run homer down the right-field line in the fifth. Matt Wallner had a two-run homer in the fourth inning as Minnesota dropped its fourth straight. Cleveland's bullpen retired 13 of the 14 hitters it faced, striking out 10. Nic Enright (2-0) got the win. Hunter Gaddis gave up a lead off double to Edouard Julien in the ninth, then struck out the next three for his first big-league save. Ramírez led off the eighth with a base hit to right field, advanced to second on Carlos Santana's single and scored the go-ahead run on Naylor's double to right off Pierson Ohl (0-2). Cleveland right fielder C.J. Kayfus drove in a run on his first MLB at-bat. Kayfus grounded out to shortstop Brooks Lee, but it was enough to bring in Naylor with the game's first run. Ramírez went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Not only is the All-Star third baseman 7 for 16 in his last four games, he is batting .500 (8 for 16) with four home runs and 10 RBIs on his last four promotional giveaway games. Guardians fans received Ramírez jerseys on Saturday. Minnesota RHP José Ureña (0-0, 5.40 ERA) was set to start opposite LHP Joey Cantillo (2-1, 4.14 ERA) on Sunday in the series finale.
