James Worthy is bullish on Lakers' acquisition of Jake LaRavia

A lot of people are talking about the Los Angeles Lakers getting center Deandre Ayton to agree to a two-year contract. While Ayton comes with some real concerns, he is a potent offensive threat and a strong rebounder, and his arrival should go a long way in plugging the gaping crater the Lakers have had at the 5 spot. But they also got forward Jake LaRavia to agree to a two-year, $12 million contract. This move has flown somewhat under the radar, but there are some in the NBA community who feel he may turn out to be a gem for the team. James Worthy, the Lakers Hall of Famer from their Showtime squads of the 1980s, seems bullish on LaRavia. He said during the "Lake Show" podcast that the 23-year-old will thrive offensively in L.A. 'I like him,' Worthy said. 'Coming to play for JJ Redick, who encourages you to take the three when you open. 'Playing with the biggest magnet in the game, Luka [Doncic], eight out of 10 plays he gets into the paint, there are four players that are collapsing around him, he's going to be able to find those guys if you can move to the level and get in eyesight.' Worthy also pointed out that L.A.'s two other main stars will help LaRavia get good shots. 'I think he'll find some shots. LeBron is another guy that breaks down the defence, Austin Reaves, he can break down the defense. 'So if you're a savvy guy that knows how to drop down to the level of the ball, and be in sight, you are going to benefit from that.' LaRavia hit 42.3% of his 3-point attempts this past season, and that is a skill the Lakers definitely need more of, especially since it looks like Redick wants them to be a high-volume 3-point shooting team. He can also attack the basket off the dribble a bit, and he may be an underrated defender, especially when it comes to getting steals and deflections. During the 2024-25 season, LaRavia averaged 12.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.7 steals per 36 minutes.

Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson among Memphis Grizzlies players on summer league roster

The Memphis Grizzlies announced their summer league roster on July 4, and it includes some familiar names. Jaylen Wells, Cam Spencer and GG Jackson are among the returning Grizzlies players included on the roster. Rookies Cedric Coward, Javon Small and Jahmai Mashack are also listed. Advertisement Mashack's availability is pending an NBA trade that hasn't been finalized. Small is expected to play, but Memphis may be without its first round pick. Coward is doubtful to play in summer league, a Grizzlies spokesperson told The Commercial Appeal. He continues to rehab a shoulder injury that limited him to six games last season at Washington State. After being acquired by the Grizzlies with No. 11 overall pick, Coward told media that he feels ready, but the decision would ultimately be up to his medical team. Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman said that Coward had on only done 1-on-0 drills, so the team would need to see him in 5-on-5 full contact workouts to fully clear him. Center Will Magnay is also questionable to play due to a wrist injury. The Grizzlies will begin summer league action in Salt Lake City on July 5 against the Oklahoma City Thunder (6 p.m., ESPNU). Magic Deal Blow to Bucks on Saturday With Latest Move

Magic Deal Blow to Bucks on Saturday With Latest Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NBA Free Agency is in full swing, and teams are making serious moves to reshape their futures. While some squads are stacking up talent and building momentum, others, like the Milwaukee Bucks, are facing more uncertainty than they'd hoped for. With minimal major signings and a few key changes, it is definitely a dream Bucks didn't expect in offseason. Advertisement The Bucks have already waived young forward Chris Livingston, signaling a shift in priorities. They did re-sign Kevin Porter Jr., who's expected to take over starting point guard duties, but fans remain skeptical. The roster shuffle continues, but Saturday brought another blow, this time from the Orlando Magic. Joe Prunty calls during a NBA GameKelley L Cox-Imagn Images According to NBA Insider Marc Stein, longtime Bucks assistant coach Joe Prunty is heading to Orlando to join Jamahl Mosley's growing staff. He'll be joined by the legendary God Shammgod in what's turning into one of the league's most exciting assistant lineups. 'Orlando is indeed adding Bucks assistant Joe Prunty as well as God Shammgod,' Stein reported. Advertisement Prunty has had two different stints with the Bucks, dating back to 2014. He even served as interim head coach in 2018, leading the team to a competitive seven-game playoff series. Well-regarded by fans and players alike, his departure leaves a leadership void on Doc Rivers' staff. But Milwaukee may already have a replacement in mind. Rajon Rondo, who spent last season as a guest coach, is reportedly a strong candidate to join the coaching staff full-time. Doc Rivers once called Rondo 'the smartest player he's ever coached,' and his presence could be crucial in developing the Bucks' young backcourt. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Magic are having a standout offseason, adding Desmond Bane, Tyus Jones, and two promising rookies Jase Richardson and Noah Penda while now boosting their sideline game with elite minds like Prunty.
