Approx 72 per cent voting in Gujarat gram panchayats elections
Despite rains in some parts of the state, long queues were seen at many of the 10,479 polling stations set up for the exercise.
Ahmedabad, Jun 22 (PTI) A voter turnout of around 72 per cent was recorded on Sunday in elections to 3,894 gram panchayats in Gujarat, with voters braving rains in several areas to cast votes in the first such exercise after the 27 per cent OBC quota was announced for local bodies in 2023. Polling remained peaceful barring a few incidents of violence in some districts, officials said.
'Estimated 72 per cent voting was recorded in the panchayats elections,' the State Election Commission stated in a release on Sunday night.
According to SEC, 81 lakh voters were eligible to exercise their franchise.
Gram panchayat elections are usually not contested on party lines.
Candidates do not fight on party tickets, though they may be affiliated with political parties.
'Voting was largely peaceful barring a few incidents of violence,' an SEC press release said.
Group clashes were reported in Dahod and Kutch districts while complaints regarding mistakes in voter rolls and missing ballot papers were received from some villages in other districts, briefly affecting the voting process.
In the Panchmahal district, the son of a candidate in the fray for the sarpanch's post was attacked by rival groups in Dhanitra village. The injured was taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a village in Banaskantha district, a 95-year-old woman arrived to exercise her franchise with her grandson amid heavy rains. Kamiben Suthar (103) also exercised her franchise in a village in Banaskantha district.
Kheda MLA Arjunsinh Chauhan and former Tharad MLA Gujlabsinh Rajput were among the early voters. Minister Mukesh Patel also exercised his franchise in a village in Surat district.
'Panchayat is an important pillar of democracy, so the right candidate should win the elections. I would appeal to people to record 100 per cent voting,' Chauhan said.
The SEC had identified 3,939 polling stations as sensitive and 336 as highly sensitive.
Out of 8,326 gram panchayats, for which elections were declared on May 25, general and mid-term polls are being held for 3,541, and bypolls for 353 panchayats.
As many as 1,023 gram panchayats have been declared uncontested and vacant with no candidate filing nomination, the SEC said.
The SEC said gram panchayat polls in six talukas under the Kadi and Visavadar assembly seats were cancelled due to by-elections held there on Thursday.
This is the first time that elections are being held on a big scale in Gujarat after the state government in August 2023 announced a 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in panchayats, municipalities and civic corporations on recommendations of the Zaveri Commission's report.
Earlier, OBC reservation in local bodies was capped at 10 per cent.
After the Supreme Court ruled that the OBC reservation should be proportionate to their population, the state government, in July 2022, set up the KS Jhaveri Commission to gather and analyse data on the nature and implications of backwardness in local bodies.
The existing quota for Scheduled Castes (14 per cent) and Scheduled Tribes (7 per cent) in local bodies remained unchanged, and there has been no breach of the 50 per cent reservation ceiling. PTI KA PD ARU BNM NSK

BJD demands apology as BJP MLA's remarks trigger political storm in Odisha, FIRs filed
Khatua, a lawmaker from Nilgiri assembly constituency in Balasore district, in a statement to certain television channels allegedly made 'derogatory' remarks on Samantasinghar's character. BJD's senior general secretary and spokesperson Lekhashree Samantasinghar has also drawn the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by tagging a letter in her X post. Bhubaneswar, Jul 3 (PTI) Ruling BJP MLA Santosh Khatua on Thursday courted controversy after allegedly making 'derogatory' remarks against a prominent woman BJD leader, prompting a strong backlash and a demand for an apology from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the saffron party. Meanwhile, at least three FIRs were filed at Nilgiri police station on Thursday evening by separate persons — including two women — accusing Khatua of making derogatory and objectionable remarks against the woman. 'Dear Modi Ji @narendramodi, Please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians. This is true blood BJP neta giving true salute to women,' Samantasinghar wrote. 'I know you have very competent and intelligent Odia officers in @PMOIndia and Party. Please ask them to translate for you. After listening to it, we will see if you still have the motivation to talk about 'naari ka samman' or 'Operation Sindoor'.' 'Your promise for women will sound hollow if you fail to take action against such misogynistic elected representatives,' Samantasinghar stated. The controversy started from a press conference by Samantasinghar on Wednesday, where she accused Khatua of involvement in the killing of a tusker and theft of its tusks in Balasore's Nilgiri area on June 15. She also called the BJP MLA a 'thief' and a 'dacoit.' In what appeared to be a retaliatory statement made to certain television channels, Khatua allegedly made remarks on Samantasinghar's character, which were widely condemned. Attempts to contact the Nilgiri legislator failed as his phone remained switched off after the interview. Khatua's remarks, which went viral in social media, sparked a statewide outrage over the language used by a lawmaker. However, PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of the viral video. Leader of the opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik strongly denounced the BJP MLA's remark and called upon people to oppose such kind of words against a woman. 'Otherwise, as a state, we will fail before our daughters and mothers,' he said. In a post on X, Patnaik said: 'Attempting to assassinate a woman's character in public as a political response is a reflection of a sick mentality and is aimed at suppressing women's voices. It suggests that all women should remain silent. The most distressing aspect is the profound silence of BJP leaders.' He added, 'Not a single leader has come forward to condemn such reprehensible remarks or hold the MLA accountable. This behaviour and the silence of all concerned clearly reveal the stance of the ruling party in public.' At a press conference on Thursday, Pramila Mallik, the Opposition chief whip in the Odisha Assembly and BJD senior vice-president, condemned Khatua's comments and accused the BJP of obstructing women's participation in politics. 'BJP MLA Khatua has used extremely hateful, ugly, insulting and low-quality language towards Dr. Lekhashree Samantasinghar. If such language is used against a woman, it is never acceptable in a civilised society,' Mallik said. 'There are also women leaders and elected women representatives in the BJP. Has the BJP, which claims to be a party with a difference, trained its MLAs to speak this way about women?' she asked. Mallik further asserted that the remarks were not just personal but an affront to all women, and demanded a public apology. 'Khatua's remarks are not directed at one woman alone—they are an insult to the entire women fraternity. Therefore, CM Mohan Charan Majhi and the BJP must apologise to the women of Odisha,' she added. Responding to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal defended Khatua, claiming that he is being falsely implicated in the elephant poaching case. 'Nilgiri MLA is being falsely dragged into the elephant killing case. The BJD has done a PhD in making false allegations,' Biswal said in a statement. He added that four people have already been arrested in connection with the elephant deaths at Kuldiha Sanctuary, and those apprehended were habitual offenders. 'Even during the BJD's tenure, elephants were killed. This is nothing but a conspiracy to malign the image of BJP legislators,' he alleged. Tribal outfits to resume agitation over Nagaland job reservation policy on July 9
The CoRRP has maintained that the policy, which has been in place since 1977, no longer reflects the current socio-economic and educational scenario of various communities in the northeastern state. The push for review of Nagaland's job reservation policy intensified after the five major tribal bodies – Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma and Sumi – under the banner of the '5-Tribe CoRRP', submitted a joint memorandum to the state government. Kohima, Jun 3 (PTI) The Committee on Review Reservation Policy (CoRRP) – representing five major Naga tribes – on Thursday announced resumption of the second phase of agitation over its demand for review of the state's job reservation policy. During a meeting convened by Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton on June 3, the state government had assured the tribal bodies that a commission would be constituted to look into the matter by June 17. However, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had said the commission's task is 'very detailed' and cannot deliver immediate results. He also stated that any reforms – be it in administration, reservations, or delimitations – should be carried out only after the national census, which is expected to begin in 2027. Unhappy with the state government's response, CoRRP announced that a sit-in protest will be held at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima on July 9. This marks the second phase of their protest, which had been suspended since June 3. CoRRP member-secretary G K Zhimomi told PTI: 'It will be a one-day protest for now. We'll observe the government's response and take further steps accordingly.' PTI NBS RBT This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
