TN BJP to protest on July 1 demanding action against DMK MP Raja's 'uncivil' remarks
The BJP state president reminded reporters that A. Raja had spent time in Delhi's Tihar Jail as a prime accused in the 2G spectrum allotment case, which the Comptroller and Auditor General once estimated to have caused a presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer.
Although Raja was acquitted by a trial court in 2017, appeals filed by federal agencies remain pending before the Delhi High Court.
"Someone who has faced such serious charges should show greater humility, not hurl insults at constitutional authorities," the BJP leader said.
Nagendran accused the ruling DMK of "turning a blind eye" to repeated instances of intemperate speech by its senior functionaries.
"If the ruling party thinks it can speak without accountability, it is mistaken. Vitriol erodes democratic values and breeds public resentment," he warned, urging Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to rein in party colleagues.
Under the schedule announced, seven parallel demonstrations will be held - one in each of the police districts carved out of the Chennai metropolitan area.
Senior state office-bearers, district presidents and heads of the party's frontal organisations will lead the rallies, which are expected to draw "several thousand" workers, supporters and members of the public.
Petitions demanding legal proceedings against A. Raja will be submitted to local authorities at every venue.
The BJP has already lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner, seeking registration of a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Nainar Nagendran hinted at an "escalated agitation calendar" if no action follows.
"Should the DMK persist with this anarchic style, the BJP will be forced to mount sustained protests," he said.
DMK leaders were not immediately available for comment at the time of filing this report.

He also raised questions about the functioning of liquor shops during Jagan Reddy's rule, asking, 'Why were there no digital payments in liquor shops back then? Where did all the cash collected go? Is it not true that the funds were diverted through shell companies?' Minister Satya Prasad emphasised that their government was not only fulfilling promises made in the manifesto but was also implementing additional welfare measures. He announced that from August 15, the government will roll out the free bus travel scheme for women. He further promised that unemployment allowances for jobless youth will be distributed soon.

Industries Minister visits Kovur sugar factory
Nellore: Industries and Commerce Minister T G Bharath along with Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy visited the Kovur Co-operative Sugar Factory Limited (KCSFL) located at Pothireddy Palem village in Kovur mandal on Tuesday. On this occasion, the Minister sought to know the reasons related to closure of KCSFL and why the Sugarcane Farmers Associations (SFA) was not handed over land to the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC). Mentioning the circumstances that led to the closure of KCFCL, Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy said that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu agreed to pay the Rs 28 crore arrears to the workers in order to facilitate reopening of KCSFL. The MLA appealed to the Minister to initiate steps to see that the APIIC gets the possession of 124 acres of land related to KCSFL, so that more industrial units could be set up. It may be recalled that the KCSFL was established under Nellore Co-operative Sector (NCS) at Pothireddypalem village of Kovur mandal in 1979. It functioned well for three decades providing direct and indirect employment to around 10,000 people. It has also contributed to the economic growth of sugarcane farmers belonging to 15 mandals of Kovur, Kavali and Nellore Rural constituencies. The factory has remained closed for past 13 years due to severe financial crisis. After the coalition government came to power last year, MLA Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy raised the issue on the floor of the Assembly several times. Following her plea, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu at a recent meeting assured to pay Rs 28 crore to the workers.

Rs 17.4 lakh gutka seized from tempo in Navi Mumbai; 1 held
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Thane, Jul 23 (PTI) Police have confiscated the banned gutka valued at Rs 17.4 lakh from a tempo and arrested one person in this connection in Navi Mumbai, an official said on Wednesday. The tempo was intercepted on Mumbai-Pune road on Monday evening. Upon checking, the police recovered gutka of various brands from the vehicle, the official from Kamote police station said. A 23-year-old man, resident of Kandivli in neighbouring Mumbai, was arrested in this connection on Tuesday, he said. A case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
