5 of family killed, burnt in Bihar over ‘witchcraft' suspicion
The incident occurred in Tetgama village, under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station in Rajiganj, on Sunday night. While three persons have been arrested, police said many from the village may be involved.
'It is an Oraon community village, with most of the villagers belonging to the tribal group. We received information that five members of a family were assaulted and killed. Whether they were burnt alive or set on fire after death is under investigation,' said Pankaj Kumar Sharma, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar Purnea.
Sharma said a 16-year-old boy from the family, who was away at a relative's house during the attack, first informed police. 'He has alleged the involvement of the entire village and identified four main accused, of whom three have been arrested,' he said.
He said a special team has been formed to nab the remaining suspects. 'Four names are mentioned in the FIR, three have been arrested, but indications are emerging that the entire village may have been involved. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused and we are also investigating to check for any further involvements,' Sharma said.
The SDPO said that preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may have been triggered by a dispute over 'jhaad-phook' (traditional healing practices). 'Prima facie, it appears that the incident was triggered by a dispute over traditional healing practices or alleged witchcraft. The family of Babu Lal Oraon, who practised such rituals, is believed to have been targeted after a child from Ramdev Oraon's family died three days ago and another fell ill. It appears that this may have led to the attack,' Sharma said.
He said the exact circumstances of the deaths are still being determined.
Following the incident, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X to target the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government. 'In Purnia, five members of the same family were burned alive and killed. Due to the DK Tax, lawlessness in Bihar is at its peak, the DGP/Chief Secretary are helpless, and law and order has collapsed,' he said in a post.
'Day before yesterday in Siwan, three people were killed in a massacre. In recent days, three were killed in Buxar. In Bhojpur, three people were massacred. Criminals are on alert mode and the chief minister is unconscious! DK is enjoying it. Because DK is the real boss,' he said, without explaining the reference to 'DK'.
Independent Lok Sabha MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, said in a post on X: 'I am ashamed. The world has reached Mars and our people are indulging in massacres on the suspicion of witchcraft!'
Condemning the incident, Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar said, 'I must say that people, especially poor, Dalits and socially marginalised are not safe in the state. This is called jungle-raj.

Law and order collapsed in Bihar, feel sorry to back govt: Chirag Paswan
Paswan, who heads the LJP (Ram Vilas) -- a constituent of the BJP-led NDA, was talking to reporters in Patna before leaving for Gayaji, where he is scheduled to address a rally Press Trust of India Patna Union minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday said he felt "sorry to support" the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, charging it with failure to control the law and order situation in the state. Paswan, who heads the LJP (Ram Vilas) -- a constituent of the BJP-led NDA, was talking to reporters in Patna before leaving for Gayaji, where he is scheduled to address a rally. "I have heard claims that the recent spurt in violent crimes is linked to the upcoming assembly polls, and there are attempts to defame this government. Still, it is the responsibility of the administration to keep the law and order situation under control. I feel sorry to support a government which is failing on this count," said the Hajipur MP. "The situation in the state has become scary. The administrative failure is being blamed on both rank incompetence and connivance with criminals," he added. Paswan claimed that almost every day, incidents of murder, kidnapping, dacoity and rape are being reported from the state "Authorities concerned have miserably failed to check the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Law and order have collapsed. The situation is almost out of control. It needs to be checked immediately," he said. Paswan's comments are expected to give ammunition to the RJD-led opposition, which is attacking the Nitish Kumar government over the spate of crimes that have rocked the state over the last few months. Elections would be due in the state later this year. 'Ashamed to support Bihar govt': Chirag Paswan flays NDA ally Nitish Kumar over rising crime; 'can't keep Biharis safe'
Chirag Paswan and Nitish Kumar (R) NEW DELHI: "I feel ashamed that I am supporting a government where crime has become uncontrolled," said LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Saturday, stirring political waters with a pointed attack on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar -- even as his party remains part of the BJP-led NDA. With elections in Bihar looming later this year, Chirag's blunt criticism has caused ripples within the ruling alliance. Addressing reporters, Chirag expressed anguish over the deteriorating law and order in Bihar. "The way crime is happening in Bihar, the administration has totally bowed down in front of the criminals. It is correct that this incident required condemnation, but why such incidents are happening? There is a series of crimes. If it continues like this, the situation would be frightening, rather, it has become so..." He continued, "If it is said that it is happening because of the election, I can also aver it might possibly be so, it might be a conspiracy to defame the government, but even then, it is the responsibility of the administration to control it. Either the administration is in collusion with it, or the administration has become completely useless, and now it is beyond their power to keep Bihar and Biharis safe." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like All Eyes Were On Kate—Even Prince William Was Left Breathless Crowdy Fan Undo "I request the Bihar government to take action on this matter in a timely manner. I feel ashamed that I am supporting such a government, under which crime has gotten out of control," Chirag added. Chirag's remarks come in the backdrop of a series of high-profile crimes in Bihar in the past month -- including the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra inside Patna's Paras Hospital, industrialist Gopal Khemka being shot outside his home, and killings of sand trader Ramakant Yadav and grocery trader Vikram Jha in separate incidents. Meanwhile, another constituent of the NDA, HAM leader and Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, expressed concern over internal tensions within the alliance. He said, "We are in NDA. We have to help NDA. We wish him all the best. He should strengthen the NDA. If he does not adopt the 2020 policy, it will be a very good thing. Because today NDA has become necessary for the society and the country. Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar are doing all kinds of development. If someone opposes NDA, then I think he does not have good feelings towards the people of the state and the country and if work is being done to strengthen it, then we will appreciate it..." The opposition Congress, a partner in the RJD-led alliance, shared the video of Chirag's criticism, indirectly targeting Nitish Kumar and highlighting cracks within the NDA camp. Still, brushing aside speculation of any rift, Chirag clarified that his party would not repeat the 2020 move of going solo. "Our party considers all NDA candidates as their own, and we are ready to put in our entire effort to ensure their victory on all 243 seats in the state," he said. As Bihar moves closer to elections, the battle lines are clearly drawn. The NDA -- with BJP, JD(U), and LJP (RV) -- is preparing to face a united opposition led by RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, with backing from Congress and Left parties across all seats.
