Players' union urges FIFA to scrap early kick-offs at ‘extremely high risk' World Cup venues

New York Times9 hours ago

Football's global players union has urged FIFA to abandon plans for midday and afternoon kick-offs to avoid the heat in three 'extremely high risk' venues at next summer's World Cup.
A report by FIFPRO, which represents more than 70,000 professional players worldwide, identified Kansas City and Miami, along with Monterrey in Mexico, as cities that carried 'extremely high risk' of heat-stress injury if World Cup matches are played in the afternoon.

Atlanta, Dallas and Houston were also identified in that category due to high temperatures and humidity, but FIFPRO expects retractable roofs and climate-control technology to be used there to reduce the risk to players and spectators.
Another five World Cup host cities were cited as 'very high risk' (Boston, Philadelphia and Guadalajara) or 'high risk' (Los Angeles and New York/New Jersey). Only San Francisco and Vancouver were classed as 'low risk'.
Weather conditions have disrupted this summer's Club World Cup in the U.S., with FIFPRO saying that the matches between Chelsea and Esperance de Tunis, and Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid, should not have been allowed to kick off in such extreme heat in Los Angeles at midday local time.
FIFPRO has made representations to FIFA about kick-off times, but the union's leadership fears 'commercial interests' — driven by a pressure to satisfy a huge global TV audience, particularly in Europe and Asia — will hold sway in some cases.
Professor Dr Vincent Gouttebarge, FIFPRO's medical director, told reporters on a Zoom call on Monday: 'From our research, a couple of cities and some matches on the ongoing Club World Cup can be labelled as having a higher risk for heat-related illness, or, in the worst case, extreme high risk for heat related illness.
'There are certain areas in a country that will be more at risk. So think about match destinations such as Orlando or Miami, for example, where you can see over a period of years that there's a higher risk attached to these venues and destinations.
'The question is, if we look at match scheduling and match planning ahead of the tournament, if we actually need midday kick-off times in these locations or in these high-risk areas — if we should probably move towards late kick-off times as a preferences for these venues.'

FIFPRO general secretary Alex Phillips said some of its recommendations for the Club World Cup had been taken on board by FIFA, but others — including around kick-off times — had been rejected.
FIFA is due to settle on its match schedule for the World Cup after the draw for the finals is made in December. There will be further conversations with FIFPRO over the months ahead, but the union says its powers are limited.
'I think based on this experience (of the Club World Cup), it (FIFA) is likely to be more flexible, but we have absolutely no power to force them to,' Philips said.
'We can only use informal pressure and good argumentation. We don't really have any coercive right.
'FIFA have actually modified how they've been dealing with heat during the (Club World Cup) matches, based on the FIFPRO outfit. Obviously it would have been if that had happened in advance, but it's better than they have adapted and they've put in place various different mitigation measures. There's additional water around the pitch, towels and so on.'
Dr Gouttebarge said one proposal being trialled is the extension of the half-time break — from 15 to 20 minutes — to help players hydrate and cool down. He also proposed shorter but more frequent in-game cooling breaks, suggesting that the three-minute break used at the Club World Cup (generally at 30 and 75 minutes) are less beneficial.

Activists: FIFA should protect World Cup attendees from immigration enforcement

A coalition of community organizations convened on FIFA's doorstep in Coral Gables on Monday afternoon to urge the soccer world's governing body to protect attendees at World Cup events from 'overzealous immigration enforcement.' About a dozen activists gathered on the sidewalk outside the gold-toned metal spirals that embellish the main entrance of FIFA's new legal and compliance division office, holding signs reading 'FIFA, eyes on the ball, ICE off the field!' and 'FIFA, the world is watching!' Speakers said recent actions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials had provoked increasing concern over the safety of local residents attending the Club World Cup games this summer at Hard Rock Stadium. The stadium will also host seven World Cup matches next year. 'We've long been concerned about ICE at sporting events under this administration, but our concerns have been heightened by irresponsible statements from ICE and CBP,' said Thomas Kennedy, an immigrant rights advocate with the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Kennedy highlighted a June 10 post by Customs and Border Protection on social media site X that said the federal law enforcement agency would be 'suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games.' The post was later deleted but not before arousing the concern of immigration rights groups in South Florida. The same day, NBC Miami reported that ICE had advised, in a statement regarding enforcement at Club World Cup games, that 'all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status.' When asked to clarify, ICE told the Miami Herald: 'As is customary for an event of this magnitude with national security implications, ICE will be working alongside our Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice partners to help ensure the safety and security of the event.' The following night, on June 11, a celebration of the upcoming World Cup hosted by Spanish-language television network Telemundo aboard a boat in Biscayne Bay was abruptly canceled following a surprise inspection by the Coast Guard, alongside at least one border patrol agent. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who was aboard the boat at the time, said in a statement that the inspection was 'deeply troubling' and 'should not have happened.' Coast Guard spokesperson Chief Petty Officer Nicole Groll told the Herald that the inspection 'was not a targeted immigration thing.' On Monday, Kennedy told the crowd outside FIFA's offices that his group had confirmed that federal immigration agents had been present at recent Club World Cup games. But Kennedy said his organization had not witnessed immigration agents at the games indiscriminately detaining attendees or demanding they provide proof of residency. 'FIFA has an opportunity to use the power of the game and culture to help us meet this moment,' said Laura Muñoz, the civic engagement director for the Florida Student Power Network. 'Soccer has the power to bring us together, and that's what we need the most right now — that's what we're asking for FIFA to do.' Muñoz told the press conference that FIFA needed to recognize that many of Miami's soccer fans were staying home and out of the bleachers because of fear over immigration enforcement. 'Especially for undocumented youth, they can't feel safe going to a game,' Muñoz said. 'This situation has gotten out of hand.' FIFA did not provide a formal response to the press conference as of late Monday, but a June 17 press release from the organization highlighted the 'record crowds and unmatched passion' of the matches at Hard Rock Stadium. The statement also said fans from over 130 countries had purchased tickets, traveling from across the globe to attend the games. 'FIFA is proud of the unique and multicultural atmosphere and support this new competition has already generated,' FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in the statement. 'FIFA Club World Cup continues to grow into the undisputed pinnacle of global club football.'

Chiefs Fans Learn Where Offense Ranks on 'Entertaining' List

Chiefs Fans Learn Where Offense Ranks on 'Entertaining' List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs are no longer the offense that puts up points for fun with Patrick Mahomes throwing for 300+ yards and multiple touchdowns per game, but that doesn't mean they aren't entertaining. Advertisement Yes, how the offense has performed in the past couple of seasons may seem dull, but they have won back-to-back Super Bowls and been to a third in three years. But as we enter the 2025 season, some are a little turned off by the Chiefs playing to their defense, and Mahomes and Andy Reid doing "just" enough to get by. However, for USA Today's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, in ranking all 32 offenses by entertainment value, he has the Chiefs high, at No. 5. "Regardless of how often he is able to pull off the otherworldly plays he became synonymous with, Patrick Mahomes remains on a singular plane in the NFL when it comes to tilting games in his favor," Middlehurst-Schwartz writes. Advertisement "Travis Kelce, meanwhile, shouldn't be expected to merely fade away in the twilight of his career despite last year's relatively modest statistical output. More importantly, the return of Rashee Rice and Marquise "Hollywood" Brown unquestionably will alter the complexion of the offense for the better, even if protection questions remain after a reshuffling of the left side of the offensive line." Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Marquise "Hollywood" BrownCharles LeClaire-Imagn Images Any team that has Mahomes on it will always be must-watch TV, given his ability to always make "the" play in the biggest moments, coupled with his uncanny knack for producing "what the hell did he just do" moments rather regularly. Many think the Chiefs in 2025 will be one of the teams to fall off the proverbial cliff, given the dynasty has lasted so long. But make no mistake, as KC fans debate these rankings … the Chiefs will still have a lot of eyeballs on their games, with Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Worthy as the big quartet. Advertisement The Chiefs might not be the swashbuckling offense we used to see, but they aren't any less entertaining. Big-Talking Rival Pays 'Ultimate Respect' To Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes

Big-Talking Rival Pays 'Ultimate Respect' To Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs are the ultimate modern NFL dynasty. Since Patrick Mahomes has taken over, the Chiefs have been the dominant force in the AFC, winning three Super Bowls and appearing in each of the last seven AFC Championship games. Advertisement Their conference-wide dominance naturally trickles down to the separation they have established from their AFC West rivals. Kansas City has won the division nine years in a row and will go for the decade mark in 2025. At the same time the franchise faces a major inflection point with some viewing them at their weakest in years and some foundational players on their way out. These AFC West foes are also starting to make ground with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers both making the playoffs last season. Even the lowly Las Vegas Raiders are looking to find the chink in the Chiefs' armor as they climb out of the basement of the league. Defensive star and team leader Maxx Crosby never lacks confidence going against this group and his Raiders have pushed the Chiefs to the limit on several occasions of late. These matchups have forced Crosby to develop a respect for Mahomes and the team amid their quest to dethrone their rival. Advertisement 'It's ultimate respect when it comes to them,' Crosby said on ESPN. 'They've earned it. They've won three Super Bowls, they've got the best quarterback in football. But for us, as a pass rusher, I'm going against the best quarterback. For me, I believe I'm the best pass rusher in the world, so every time we match up it's match made in heaven.' Crosby is not alone in sharing similar sentiments. Both the Broncos and Chargers have found themselves in similar positions, sometimes catching Kansas City on a bad day. But the ultimate goal is not just to spring the upset, instead each of these three teams wants the spoils of ending this near decade-long streak. Denver and Los Angeles may be closer to achieving that goal than Las Vegas, if any can catch the Chiefs at all. But fans should expect two more wars with the Raiders this season, ready and willing to contribute to this AFC West titan's demise.
