Big plans for the Lotus Emira with hybrid tech on the cards

Auto Expressa day ago

The Emira is a strong performer for Lotus, accounting for more than 5,000 of the brand's 12,000 sales in 2024. The firm has just announced the V6 Turbo SE with a revised manual gearbox to boost precision, suspension adjustments to improve ride and handling, and a tweaked cooling system that trims weight, plus Racing Line editions with yellow pinstripes and high gloss black wheels. But with Lotus slowing down plans for an all-electric, mid-engined sports car, the firm is investigating how to electrify its existing two-seater. 'Everything's possible; we could squeeze [a hybrid] in,' Lotus Europe CEO Matt Windle told Auto Express.
Expect a very different approach from the 'hyper hybrid' system bound for the Eletre SUV and Emeya saloon, which packs a 2.0-litre turbo engine with high-power standalone electric motors on the front and rear axle.
Given the packaging constraints of the 4,412mm-long Lotus where every millimetre counts, the Emira is more likely to mirror the Ferrari 296 GTB and McLaren Artura by shoehorning an electric motor generator between the engine and transmission, boosting power and harvesting some energy for a modest battery.
There's no word yet on which of the Mercedes-AMG-sourced turbocharged 2.0-litre or Toyota-supplied 3.5-litre V6 could get the hybrid treatment. The very different characters of the four-pot and V6 make for the key customer choice at the moment, because both SE models pack 400bhp. Why, we asked Matt Windle? Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
'We didn't want to derate any of the power,' grins the sports car boss. 'We could have done that but the main driver for the engines was gearbox application, [not] power.' The four-pot comes with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission for ultra-fast changes (and the fastest 0-62mph time of 4 four seconds flat), whereas the slightly slower V6 comes with a manual or six-speed torque converter.
The Emira is available in GT4 racing spec, with more power from the V6, a sequential racing 'box and enhanced aero. Is this a template for stripped out, roadgoing Emiras following the blueprint of Porsche's 718 Cayman GT4? 'We're pretty much at the power we can be on those engines,' counters Windle – until the hybrid comes on stream.
An open-top version is likely to filter through in time: the chassis was developed with sufficient stiffness for a spider version, like the classic Elise.
An open Emira would sell well in the vital US market, where Chinese imports of the Eletre SUV and Emeya saloon are non-starters due to tariff barriers. Given that sister brand Volvo has a factory in South Carolina, could Lotus use it to assemble the big EVs in the States? 'At the moment, there are no plans for production over there,' says the European boss.

Live Austrian Grand Prix qualifying: Latest lap updates after Norris sets pace in practice

2:17PM Top five in the drivers' standings Oscar Piastri (McLaren)- 198 points Lando Norris (McLaren)- 176 points Max Verstappen (Red Bull)- 155 points George Russell (Mercedes)- 136 points Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)- 104 points 2:12PM Wolff admits Mercedes in talks to sign Max Verstappen Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has reignited talk of Max Verstappen potentially joining his team by admitting that he is having 'conversations' with Red Bull's four-time world champion with regard to a future drive. Wolff's comments came after his driver, George Russell, strongly suggested that Mercedes' pursuit of Verstappen was delaying his own contract talks. Russell has repeatedly said that he is not concerned about signing an extension to his deal, which expires at the end of this season, given his current performance levels. The Briton, 27, is fourth in the drivers' championship, 19 points behind Verstappen in third. But by common consent Russell has extracted everything he possibly could out of his car. 2:06PM Top ten in final practice earlier Lando Norris (McLaren) 1:04.324 Oscar Piastri (McLaren) +0.118 Max Verstappen (Red Bull) +0.210 Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) +0.250 Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) +0.466 George Russell (Mercedes) +0.694 Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) +0.729 Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) +0.738 Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) +0.815 Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber) +0.858 2:01PM Who will take pole in Austria? We are in the picturesque Styrian Hills of Austria and are all set for qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. It has been two weeks since the last race in Canada, won by Mercedes' George Russell, which saw the two McLarens collide, with Lando Norris crashing out and current drivers' championship leader Oscar Piastri finishing fourth. That result means Piastri heads into this weekend 22 points clear of Norris. McLaren, who lead by 175 points in the constructors' standings, have brought an upgraded front suspension to their car this weekend. Friday was a special day for Irishman Alex Dunne, who took part in first practice in Norris' McLaren and impressed finishing fourth, under a tenth off Piastri in the other McLaren. Dunne is currently leading the F2 Championship and did test McLaren's 2023 car in Texas last week in preparation for this run-out. Speaking after second practice yesterday, Norris, who topped the timesheets in both second and third practice, was full of praise for Dunne. 'The car felt good from the off. Alex gave good feedback this morning [yesterday] after FP1 and he was on the pace straight away, so it was good to see. I think they moved the car in the right direction for FP2, and we just need to understand whether we want more of that [on Saturday], or a little bit less, or somewhere in the middle. So good steps in the right direction, but still a little bit more to come hopefully. We have shown a bit more pace than some of the others. I certainly think they are going to catch up. Max is not far behind and they usually improve a lot into Saturday.' After topping second practice yesterday, Norris was also fastest in third practice earlier. Piastri was second, with Max Verstappen in third and Charles Leclerc fourth. McLaren are not the only team to bring upgrades to their car for this weekend; Red Bull have a new floor edge whilst Ferrari have a completely redesigned floor. Friday was a tough day for Lewis Hamilton, who had gearbox issues in practice one before impeding Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli in second practice. The seven-time world champion did escape serious punishment, receiving just a warning for 'unnecessary impeding'. A lot of the talk going into the weekend surrounds the futures of Verstappen and George Russell. Verstappen has been linked with a move to Mercedes, with their boss Toto Wolff confirming conversations are being had. The Dutchman is under contract at Red Bull until 2028 but it is believed to have break clauses which Verstappen could use. Verstappen and Russell have come to blows on a number of occasions on and off the track, including as recently as the Spanish Grand Prix where the two collided on track, but Wolff has said he would be happy to pair the two drivers together. Qualifying gets going at 3pm BST.

David Beckham displays his bandaged hand in a sling while showing off his homegrown vegetables as he recovers at home after operation on injured wrist

displayed his bandaged hand in a sling on Saturday as he recovered at home following an operation on his injured wrist. The day before, the former football ace, 50, left fans shocked when wife Victoria uploaded an Instagram snap of him in hospital after being left in 'unbearable' pain. A source told MailOnline that David underwent an operation to repair his wrist after breaking it during an England game 22 years ago. And at the weekend, David looked to be on the mend as he showed off his batch of homegrown vegetables, while also making a cheeky innuendo towards his wife. In a video shared to the 51-year-old Spice Girl's Instagram stories, which was captioned: 'Over performing on the cucumber front Sir David!', the sportsman could be seen inspecting his impressive garden haul. Filming her love before zooming in on his sizable produce, Victoria said: 'So this is this weekend's vegetable content. Look, he's overperforming on the cucumber front!' As she went to question if they were all from their garden, David jumped in, cheekily quipping: 'I'm not sure you could say that darling!' He then held aloft a large cucumber as Victoria giggled. It comes after the fashion designer posted a message of support on Instagram as he husband recovered in hospital. Alongside a snap of her husband, she penned: 'Get well soon daddy.' A second photo showed David with a bracelet that read: 'Get well soon'. Former England captain David broke his wrist in May 2003 in a friendly match between England and South Africa in Durban. Years later, pain and discomfort in the wrist and scans showed that there was a screw embedded in the wrist that was meant to have dissolved. After being left in 'unbearable' pain, the former footballer had surgery to remove it. David's hospitalisation comes after his eldest son Brooklyn proved not all family ties have been severed as he shared a sweet birthday tribute to David's mum Sandra on Thursday. The aspiring chef, 26, took to his Instagram page to acknowledge the celebration despite his recent social media silence on his dad's 50th milestone last month. Sharing a throwback picture of him and Sandra, he captioned: 'Happy birthday nanny xx love you so much.' Brooklyn's comment comes amid an ongoing family feud which escalated when he and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, snubbed David's 50th birthday celebrations last month. Meanwhile David himself paid a special tribute to his mother as she celebrated her birthday - and ensured absent son Brooklyn got a mention despite their widening rift. The former Manchester United and England midfielder shared a carousel of photos featuring himself with mum Sandra from childhood to the present day as she turned 76. The post comes in the midst of a growing rift with eldest son Brooklyn, who live in the United States with wife Nicola Peltz Taking to Instagram, he wrote: 'Happy birthday mum we love you so much I hope u have the best day. Thank you for always being there for us all. Love you.' David rounded off the tribute by including the Instagram handles of various family members, among them younger sister Joanne and the retired footballer's three sons with wife Victoria - Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz. Daughter Harper, at 13 too young for social media, was given a hashtag as he ended Thursday morning's tribute. The post comes in the midst of a growing rift with eldest son Brooklyn and his actress wife Nicola Peltz, who live in the United States. Sources suggested that Nicola 'very much enjoys' Brooklyn's devotion and that this has been a key factor in the feud with his family. 'He will do anything Nicola wants,' one friend said. 'And that has very much been a thing in the fallout.'
