Govt Unveils 'Apna Ghar' Rest Stops On Highways For Truck Drivers
The Government on Tuesday announced the official launch of 'Apna Ghar', a new initiative aimed at providing safe and affordable rest stops for truck drivers along national highways.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the move is part of a broader effort to reduce road accidents caused by driver fatigue and improve the working conditions of commercial vehicle drivers.
The facilities, now operational across 250 petrol stations across the country, offer basic amenities including air-conditioned rooms, beds, parking spaces, toilets, bathrooms with hot and cold water, food services, and a dedicated area for self-cooking.

The Union Minister announced the initiative in a tweet on Tuesday, saying: 'The reason for most accidents on highways is the drivers not getting enough rest and sleep."
'Air-conditioned 'Apna Ghar' on highways has emerged as a big solution to their problem. Here there is complete arrangement for food, self-cooking place, howdah-cold/hot water, toilet-bath room, parking and bed etc. for the drivers."
'Rs 112 Per Night'
'To rest at their own home, drivers will have to pay only ₹112 (for 8 hours). They will get this facility free of cost if they fill 50 liters+ of diesel in their trucks," Puri said.
'Those who drive the country's economy will no longer remain lying on the roadside. Drivers can make this booking through the mobile app/directly by reaching 'Apna Ghar'."
The rest houses can be booked through a mobile application or accessed directly on arrival, offering flexibility for long-haul drivers.
The project is being rolled out in phases, with the initial set of facilities located along key freight corridors. These include prominent highways such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, chosen for their high volume of truck traffic.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reported that driver fatigue is one of the major causes of accidents involving commercial vehicles.
Apna Ghar is intended to offer a practical and scalable solution to this issue.
Officials say more locations will be added in the coming months, and data from the pilot sites will be used to refine services and determine additional needs.
These facilities were developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and are operated by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

Amarnath Yatra Begins: State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) has set up a permanent disaster management complex at Baltal, Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra. This Disaster Management and Yatri Niwas Complex will become operational on Friday, the company said in a statement. ONGC is developing these complexes at four key locations – Baltal, Nunwan, Bijbehara, and Sidhra – in Jammu and Kashmir, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of pilgrims for the Amarnath Yatra from Jammu on July 2. The first batch of pilgrims set off from Lakhanpur to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu amid tight security arrangements, marking the official start of the Amarnath Yatra 2025. The Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu serves as the primary base camp for pilgrims from across the country before they proceed to the cave shrine of Amarnath nestled in the majestic Himalayas of South Kashmir. "The Baltal Yatri Niwas and Disaster Management Complex, spread across 6,315 square metres, is now fully operational and includes a Yatri Niwas, VIP guest house, security infrastructure, and disaster-response facilities," an ONGC spokesperson said. The 38-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high shrine will commence on July 3 from the Valley via the twin tracks—the traditional 48-kilometre Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-kilometre but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The yatra will conclude on August 9. The ONGC spokesperson added that the Baltal facility will be formally inaugurated on July 4 by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, in the presence of ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh. The facilities are currently being set up at Nunwan in Anantnag district, measuring 8,500 square metres, and at Bijbehara in Anantnag (7,640 sq m). Both sites are expected to be completed by September 2025, he said. The Sidhra complex in Jammu, designed to serve as a vital hub for boarding, emergency management, and logistical coordination, is targeted for completion by September 2026. These facilities will be operated by the Amarnath Shrine Board under the Jammu and Kashmir government, the spokesperson said, adding that it will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra, adding that over five lakh people undertake it every year. This permanent infrastructure will also benefit the local population throughout the year, the spokesperson added. The Baltal facility will provide safe lodging, sanitation, and emergency support to people undertaking the Amarnath Yatra.

59% users say app taxi services still unfair despite new govt rules: Survey
A whopping 59 per cent of app-based taxi users still face unfair trade practices and poor service, according to a recent survey by LocalCircles. This is despite the government introducing new rules to fix these issues. The survey, which took responses from over 75,000 people across 325+ districts, found that the main issues users faced were ride cancellations, surge pricing, and long waiting times. 82 per cent of users said drivers cancelled their rides, up from 75 per cent in 2023 62 per cent reported surge pricing, the same as in 2023 53 per cent faced long wait times, rising from 48 per cent last year 45 per cent were charged cancellation fees, nearly double the 23 per cent in 2023 'Drivers cancelling rides, surge pricing and long waiting times are top issues app taxi users have faced in the last 12 months; 1 in 2 experienced cancellations by the driver,' said the survey. The survey also pointed out that many users continue to face problems with drivers and vehicle condition: * 25 per cent dealt with rude drivers, up from 8 per cent in 2023 * 31 per cent found dirty vehicles * 6 per cent raised safety concerns, the same as last year Why are drivers cancelling rides? A large number — 74 per cent of users — said drivers cancelled trips after learning the destination or that payment would be digital. Although this is an improvement from 84 per cent in 2023, it remains a major concern. 'About 74 per cent app taxi users say that drivers cancel rides when they find out that the payment mode is digital, or the destination isn't convenient to them or both,' according to the survey. Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025 The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025, giving app-based taxi services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido the go-ahead to charge up to twice the base fare during peak hours, up from the earlier 1.5x limit. During off-peak hours, the fare can not drop below 50 per cent of the base rate. States have three months to roll out these changes. The new rules also penalise unfair ride cancellations: * If drivers cancel rides without valid reasons after accepting them, they will be fined 10 per cent of the fare, with a cap of ₹100 * Passengers cancelling without a good reason will face the same penalty State governments will now fix base fares for different vehicle types, including bike taxis and auto-rickshaws. Aggregators must give drivers at least 80 per cent of the fare, and they must clear payments as often as agreed in their contracts. Despite new rules, users still unhappy Even though the new rules aim to protect consumers and give drivers a fairer share of the fare, many users remain dissatisfied. About 59 per cent of the respondents said unfair practices and poor service still continue, while only 18 per cent noticed any improvement. However, the number of users who saw no change dropped from 70 per cent in 2023 to 59 per cent, suggesting "some progress but not enough". A strong majority — 82 per cent — want the government to set basic common standards for all app-based taxi services and drivers. This number remains unchanged since last year. 'A total of 82 per cent of app taxi users believe the government should bring basic common standards for shared services like app taxi aggregators and their drivers,' added the survey findings. New competitors, but challenges remain The survey comes at a time of major change in the industry. The government plans to launch 'Sahkar Taxi', a cooperative-based service that lets drivers keep their full earnings without paying commissions to platforms. States like Karnataka, Goa, and West Bengal have also started their own taxi apps, but these haven't always lived up to expectations. Meanwhile, new companies like Rapido have entered the four-wheeler taxi market, but users say they still face problems with pricing, reliability, and service quality.
