Tender issued for widening of accident-prone Nuh-Alwar highway to 4 lanes
The highway connecting Haryana's Nuh with Alwar in Rajasthan is set to become a four-lane stretch within two years to reduce traffic congestion and provide better connectivity in this region. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Thursday issued a notice inviting tender (NIT) for the four-laning of the 49.02-km stretch on the Nuh-Alwar highway (NH-248A). The current single-lane road has created traffic issues, reportedly resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths due to road accidents over the past 12 years. The project of four-laning is estimated to cost Rs 310.44 crore. To be executed under the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode, it includes strengthening and improving a 6.84-km section of the existing road in Malab and Bhadas villages in Nuh district, Haryana. The tender, issued by the superintending engineer and regional officer of the MoRTH in Jaipur, invites bids from qualified contractors. The completion period is 24 months, followed by a five-year maintenance period after the construction is complete. Bids can be submitted online via the Central Public Procurement Portal (CPPP) and Bill Information and Management System (BIMS) from July 24 to September 8, with the bid opening scheduled for September 9. The development comes after the Union government in April approved the project to convert the single-lane stretch into a four-lane road. On November 3, 2008, then Union minister S Jaipal Reddy laid the foundation for the four-lane road project. However, the project has remained in limbo. In a post on X, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in April said, 'This national highway section connects Gurugram, Sohna, and Nuh industrial areas. Due to the movement of heavy vehicles from Rajasthan to northern states, there is heavy traffic on this route. Making this section four-lane will reduce heavy traffic and provide better connectivity, which will promote economic development in this area.' Nuh Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed had earlier claimed it was the Manmohan Singh government that initiated works to convert the route into a national highway in 2014. 'But the BJP governments at the Centre and the state dropped this four-laning project in 2018, saying that the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will take care of the needs of the people,' he had said. The Congress raised the issue repeatedly in the Haryana Assembly, Ahmed said, adding that he wrote to the ministry in December 2024 about the stretch between Nuh and the Rajasthan border via Ferozepur Jhirka.

Earlier, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had declared that all new passenger vehicles would be required to have six airbags as a standard feature by October 2025. Consequently, all original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in India have started making the necessary changes to their products. Before this, Maruti Suzuki had also announced that the Fronx had become the fastest vehicle in the country to reach 1 lakh export units. The SUV achieved the milestone within 25 months of launch. It is to be noted that the Fronx is manufactured in the brand's Gujarat facility and is exported to over 80 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Japan. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx made its debut in India in April 2023. By the fiscal year 2024-25, the brand had shipped more than 69,000 units of the Fronx, making it the top exported passenger vehicle in the country during that time. In addition to the Fronx, the list of the brand's most successful export models included the Jimny, Baleno, Swift, and Dzire. During this period, the company achieved its highest annual export volume ever, exceeding 3.3 lakh units, which represents a 17.5 percent rise compared to the prior fiscal year.

Nuh's ‘killer highway' to be redeveloped soon
In a move that promises to transform road connectivity in Nuh, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a ₹325-crore tender for the construction of a 45-km-long four-lane national highway between Nuh and the Rajasthan border via Ferozepur Jhirka. The highway, part of NH-248A, has been a long-standing demand of the residents. The highway, part of NH-248A, has been a long-standing demand of the residents. (Archive) Talking about the infrastructural milestone, Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh said that the tender was floated on Friday and the project would be completed in two years. 'This highway will ease travel to Rajasthan and reduce road accidents, which have plagued this stretch for years. It is a long-awaited gift for Nuh,' he said. The 45-km stretch of newly built four-lane highway with paved shoulders, and 6.84-km of existing roads in Malab and Bhadas villages will be strengthened as part of the project. The highway will feature nine flyovers, six underpasses, and two major bypasses to ensure smooth movement and decongestion of traffic in residential areas. The project follows efforts by Rao Inderjit Singh, who raised the demand several times before Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Nuh is home to a large number of commercial drivers, mostly young men, who park their vehicles on the main Alwar-Gurugram Road, which frequently results in road accidents. At least 1,100 people have died on this stretch in more than 1,600 accidents in the last five years, according to the police. In 2017, locals labelled the stretch the 'khooni highway' (killer highway) after more than 2,500 deaths were reported in a 10-year period. So locals had long sought the highway's widening as a solution to the problem. The announcement sparked celebrations through Nuh on Friday. 'This is a historic moment. The foundation of this demand was laid back in July 2017 during a five-day dharna by Mewat RTI Manch. The struggle has finally borne fruit,' said Haji Mohammad Haroon, a local leader. Rajuddin, national president of Mewat RTI Manch, called it a victory of people's voice. 'The Congress government failed to act despite years of pleas. The BJP government has taken a bold step, and we hope this highway will be a milestone for the entire region,' he said. Local activists pointed out that the highway, infamously known as the 'killer highway' due to frequent accidents, has claimed countless lives in the past. 'Thousands from Mewat have died here over the years. Our movement began after repeated tragedies, and finally, our demands have been heard,' said Nasim Sarpanch of Santawadi. The ₹325-crore tender, released under Engineering, Procurement and Construction mode, includes ₹310.44 crore for construction and ₹40,000 as the tender fee. The Ministry has set a 24-month deadline for completion and a 60-month maintenance period. As the region gears up for the transformation, the people of Mewat see this as more than just a highway—it's a lifeline of progress, long overdue but finally on track.

Revving Up Roadways: 54,000 KM State Roads Notified As National Highways Since 2014, Says Govt
While 55,000 km has been added in national highway length, 54,000 km state roads have been notified as NHs since 2014, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed Lok Sabha. The length of the National Highways (NH) network in India has expanded from 91,287 km in March, 2014 to 146,342 km at present, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. The House was also informed that since April 2014 – the starting of the financial year 2014-15, a total of 54,004 km of state roads, including state highways and greenfield stretches, have been notified as NHs. 'Development and maintenance of NHs is a continuous process. Works on notified NHs are accordingly taken up based on the traffic density, connectivity requirement, condition of the road, inter-se priority and synergy with PM Gati Shakti NM," the Ministry said. MP Chavda Vinod Lakhamsh and Rajesh Mishra had asked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari if any proposals are pending for sanctioning of new national highways. Gadkari said currently 1,240 NHs projects in about 29,400 km length costing Rs 7.8 lakh crore are under construction in the country. Gadkari also said that at present, 206 under construction NHs projects – costing Rs 91,290 crore – are delayed in Rajasthan and north eastern states including Assam. These projects are expected to be ready in a phased manner in 2025-26 and only few projects will be completed beyond 2026-27. Pace of NH building drops below 30 km/day Gadkari said that construction of NHs and the growth in NH construction in Kilometres/day during 2014-25 has been below 30 km/day in almost all the financial year, except three times – 2020-21 (37 km/day); 2023-24 (34 km/day); 2018-19 (30 km/day). The peak of NH building in India was achieved in 2020–21 with 13,327 km built – 37 km/day. However, after that it dropped to about 28–29 km/day. The year 2023–24 was another exception, witnessing a recovery to 34 km/day, with the second-highest annual construction (12,349 km). In 2014-15 only 4,410 km of national highway was constructed – 12 km/ day and in 2015-16 the number was 6,061 km (17 km/day). During the last financial year, 2024-25, a total of 10,660 km of national highway was constructed – 29 km/day. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
