Texas A&M is typically good but not great. They've averaged eight victories since joining the SEC in 2012. Last season, their first under coach Mike Elko, they were 8-5. This year could be better if Reed continues to progress and personnel holes are adequately patched. But major defensive improvement is needed to break out of the eight-win rut.

Previewing Texas A&M's Offense for 2025
Guess the highest-scoring SEC team in conference games last season: It was Texas A&M. That may be surprising, but the Aggies averaged 29.4 points in SEC play and exceeded 30 points in five of eight conference games. They could be even better in 2025. That will depend largely on sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, who showed promise in passing for 1,864 yards and rushing for 543 last season.

Transfer receivers KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State) add much-needed speed. The Aggies also welcome the return of All-SEC running back Le'Veon Moss, who rushed for 765 yards despite missing all or most of five games because of injury.
A&M's offensive line should be among the best in the conference, maybe even the nation. Tackle Trey Zuhn III has all-conference credentials. Guards Chase Bisontis and Ar'maj Reed-Adams should also contend for postseason accolades. Center Mark Nabou Jr. is back after missing almost all of last season because of a torn ACL.

Previewing Texas A&M's Defense for 2025
After squandering a 17-point lead in a Las Vegas Bowl loss to USC, A&M head coach Mike Elko ranted about failed zone coverage, poor tackling and overall defensive futility. Once a premier defensive coordinator, Elko will resume calling that side of the ball. Still, a lot needs correcting, especially in the pass defense, which ranked 13th in the SEC.

All-SEC cornerback Will Lee III and nickelback Tyreek Chappell, also back from injury, are dependable. Transfers Jordan Shaw (Washington) and Julian Humphrey (Georgia) could upgrade coverage.
The pass rush is also a concern. Defensive end Cashius Howell had four sacks last season. Nobody else on the roster had more than 2.5.
Run defense is an issue, too. A&M allowed more runs of at least 20 yards (19) than any other team in the SEC. Linebackers Taurean York and Scooby Williams are solid, but improvement is needed.

Previewing Texas A&M's Specialists for 2025
Groza Award semifinalist Randy Bond converted 83.3% of his field-goal attempts (20-of-24) in 2024. He's made 59 field goals in his career and has hit from 55 yards. Punter Tyler White has a big leg but needs to be more consistent. Sophomore Terry Bussey has vast potential on kick returns. Kick coverage must improve.

Three Florida Gators on ESPN's way-too-early 2026 NBA big board
Florida basketball just saw three players selected in the same draft for the first time since 2007, but it might not take more than a year for the Gators to accomplish the feat again. Center Alex Condon, transfer point guard Boogie Fland and forward Thomas Haugh are all inside the top 40 on ESPN's first 2026 big board. Condon appearing at No. 29 is no surprise. He tested the draft waters this year and decided to return to improve his stock. A fringe first-round projection fits that narrative, and he can easily move up if he develops into the All-American/All-SEC big man many expect him to be. With only five centers ahead of him on ESPN's lists, the movement could happen quickly. Fland also gauged NBA interest after his freshman year with Arkansas, but a second-round projection has him back in school, except with a different SEC program. A former All-American, Fland averaged 15.1 points, 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds over the Razorbacks' first 18 games. He shot 36.5% from 3-point range, but the hand injury that ended his season might have kept that from rising over the year. Scouts will be looking for better shot selection from him and a better finishing touch near the rim. Size is also a question mark, but he can't do much to grow. ESPN has him just outside a first-round ranking at No. 31 overall. Haugh might have the highest ceiling of the group. He wasn't on draft boards coming into last year, but it's hard to imagine that there's an NBA front office without knowledge of him after the run he made in the postseason. Haugh is a big riser already at No. 40, but he could easily end the 2025-26 season as a first-rounder. 2027 5-star LB praises Texas A&M DC Jay Bateman, sees Aggies as a future option
Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's NFL career ended after the 2020 season. Since his retirement, the future Hall of Famer has been one of the top high school coaches in Texas, having coached at Liberty Christian since 2021. Like every Father's dream, Witten has been able to coach his two sons, including 2027 five-star linebacker Cooper Witten, who Texas A&M has heavily recruited. Witten is one of the best athletes in the 2027 cycle, and to no surprise, he could also play tight end at the next level due to his impressive speed and catch radius. However, he may be too solid a defender not to keep at linebacker. On Friday, KBTX reporter Tyler Shaw caught up with the younger Witten during a preseason summer scrimmage, where he praised Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who is also one of the top linebacker coaches and developers in the country. "I like (Texas) A&M a lot. Their defensive coordinator, Jay Bateman is a great coach, great guy to talk to, etc." Witten stated. "I really think he could develop me and make me into the best player I can be." This is high praise for Bateman, who, despite losing his play-calling duties this offseason, has continued to be one of the best recruiters in the country, helping land several high-ranking 2026 prospects, including five-star defensive end Tristian Given and five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington. At linebacker, former Florida LB Scooby Williams is coming off his best collegiate season, while junior Taurean York is one his way to becoming a potential first-round pick after the 2025 season. Cooper Witten was elite on both sides of the ball during his 2024 junior season, recording 45 tackles, one sack, 5 INTs (2 return touchdowns), six pass breakups, and one safety on defense. Witten hauled in 15 receptions for 263 yards and seven touchdowns as a tight end/receiver. According to 247Sports, Cooper Witten is currently positioned as the 24th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 1-ranked linebacker, and the 4th-ranked prospect in Texas. 2026 4-star WR and Texas A&M commit has shut down his recruitment
Texas A&M's future wide receiver corps, outside of one 2026 five-star prospect who is set to commit early next month, is set in stone, as 2026 four-star wideout Madden Williams has reportedly shut down his recruitment after his official visit to College Station last weekend, joining four-star wide receiver commits Aaron Gregory and Mike Brown. Williams, who recently signed an NIL-based deal with Adidas ahead of his senior season, is one of the rising stars in the Aggies' 2026 cycle, possessing elite route-running skills and steadily improving as a consistent separator in coverage, utilizing his size. Williams was one of the early commitments in the class, announcing his pledge back in December, so credit to coach Mike Elko, OC Collin Klein, and WR coach Holmon Wiggins for keeping him in house. Texas A&M's California recruiting pipeline under Elko is similar to that of the former head coach Jimbo Fisher, who dominated Florida during his six-year tenure. Williams will enter his senior season at St. John Bosco, one of the elite football programs in the Golden State, and Williams is on track to best his 2024 stats after recording 50 receptions for 851 yards and 13 touchdowns during his junior campaign. So far, Mike Elko is on track to have nearly every one of his 21 2026 commitments shut down their recruitments before Early Signing Day on December 4, further proving that the program is in excellent hands from a recruiting and development standpoint.
