HIMS students grapple with cadaver shortage

Time of India2 days ago
Haveri: The Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) is experiencing a critical shortage of cadavers for anatomy dissection, affecting both students and the administration.
National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines stipulate one cadaver per 15 anatomy students. Due to non-compliance, HIMS got a Rs 15 lakh penalty last year and submitted documentation regarding cadaver arrangements.
Officials have secured arrangements for 10 cadavers from Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, with delivery expected within a week. Despite six persons pledging body donations, the current availability remains insufficient for educational requirements.
Sources indicate limited body donations due to social and religious factors. Despite ongoing awareness initiatives about the significance of body donations to medical institutions, public participation in these programmes remains notably low.
"Some people are showing interest in donating bodies, but their relatives are expecting something from the institution in return. People do not know that the donation of a body is a social cause, but they have considerations after body donation.
Some donors' successors are demanding money from us, but we refused to provide the same," stated a HIMS official.
The authorities face limitations in utilising unclaimed bodies from police quarters for educational purposes, as these require postmortem. The Haveri district hospital's insufficient infrastructure, including the absence of cold storage and mortuary facilities, complicates the preservation of unclaimed bodies.
Post-police investigation, these bodies often become unsuitable for academic purposes due to decomposition.
"The anxiety and doubts about the fate of their bodies after donation are the main reasons for showing unwillingness among the non-medical professionals in society. Misconceptions about body donation are deeply rooted in the population in rural areas. While the urban population is aware of organ and body donations it is ignorant about the procedure and criteria for the same," stated Dr Pradeep Kumar MV, dean of HIMS.
He added that they approached the department of medical education regarding the cadaver shortage, which suggested obtaining them from Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences due to their surplus. "Hassan Medical College authorities have allotted 10 bodies to our institute, and we will collect these bodies within a week. Our cadaver scarcity will be fulfilled this year," Dr Pradeep Kumar informed.

Minorities panel seeks completion of SAT Hospital's Mother-Child Block by December 2025

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Minorities Commission chairman advocate A A Rasheed has directed authorities to expedite and complete the remaining work of the Mother and Child Block at the Sree Avittam Thirunal Hospital (SAT) in Thiruvananthapuram by December 2025. The directive came during a special sitting held at the Commission headquarters on Monday, following a newspaper report highlighting that the building, inaugurated years ago, is still not fully operational. A report submitted to the Commission by the Health Department Secretary, District Collector, Director of Medical Education, Principal of the Medical College, and SAT Hospital Superintendent revealed that while the construction of two floors was completed and handed over to the hospital in 2017, only the ground floor, housing the gynaecology outpatient section, is currently in use. Authorities informed the Commission that KIIFB has approved funds to the tune of Rs 11.23 crore for the remaining works, including a ramp, fire staircase, site development etc. The tender process has already been initiated. The SAT Hospital Superintendent stated that the pending works are expected to commence within two weeks and would be completed in eight months.

CM resolves 10k grievances in 11 sessions

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has resolved more than 10,000 public grievances during 11 rounds of hearings since assuming office, the CMO said on Monday. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), 10,132 out of 10,894 grievances received so far have been addressed — a resolution rate of 93 per cent. The remaining cases are currently under process, it added. Accompanied by a team of seven ministers and senior officers, Majhi on Monday held the 12th session of the Chief Minister's Public Grievance Hearing since assuming office in June last year. The Chief Minister and his team heard grievances of around 1,000 people during the day, the statement said. Continuing his practice, the Chief Minister first met and heard the grievances of persons with disabilities (PwDs) before proceeding to listen to other petitioners in the chamber. 'The Chief Minister directed department secretaries present at the hearing to take immediate steps to resolve the issues raised,' the CMO stated. A single-window mechanism has been established to ensure immediate disbursement of medical assistance to patients suffering from critical and life-threatening diseases, under the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF). Majhi approved Rs 9.50 lakh in assistance for 10 persons requiring urgent medical care. So far this year, Rs 53.50 lakh has been provided to 48 beneficiaries through this streamlined process. Ministers Suresh Pujari, Mukesh Mahaling, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, Nityananda Gond, Krushna Chandra Patra, Pradeep Bal Samanta and Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia accompanied Majhi during the session. In May, the Chief Minister had stated in a post on X that, 'In a people's government, the highest priority is given to resolving people's problems. The complaints of common people were heard at the new grievance centre at Unit-2 in Bhubaneswar. Officials have been directed to take immediate steps to resolve their problems for the benefit of the complainants.'
