2025 Land Rover Defender Octa Black: South African price and specs
Following the reveal of the Range Rover Sport SV Black, Land Rover has now applied the same formula to the flagship Defender, the Octa. And it will strictly be available in limited numbers.
The Defender Octa Black features Narvik Black exterior paintwork, Satin Black Powder Coat finish for the front undershield and rear scuff plates, and gloss black exhaust outlets. Several underbody elements have also been finished in the latter hue. The limited edition is available with the choice of 20- and 22-inch wheels, replete with black centre caps.
The exterior theme is carried over to the cabin, where the facia is finished in black and the seats are upholstered in Ebony semi-aniline leather and textile material. Carbon-fibre trim is available as a cost option.
As a reminder, the Coventry automaker's most powerful Defender employs a 4.4l V8, sourced from BMW. The twin-turbocharged petrol unit produces a healthy 467kW and 750N.m of torque, delivered to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to Land Rover, these figures allow the pinnacle Defender to sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in four seconds, before topping out at 250km/h, or 210km/h when fitted with 20-inch wheels.
Land Rover Defender Octa Black price in South Africa
The Defender Octa Black is priced from R3 979 500, making it R315 900 more expensive than the standard Defender Octa, which we sampled in First Edition form in January 2025. Included in the pricing are a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan and a warranty spanning the same number of years and distance.

Said Mark Cameron, MD of the Defender brand: 'The introduction of the Defender Octa Black takes things up a notch [on the standard derivative]. We know our clients love giving their Defenders all-black finishes, so our designers have applied this principle to every possible surface – inside and out – to create the ultimate tough luxury Defender Octa.'

BMW CEO Zipse optimistic on 'manageable' US car tariff agreement
The mechanism could be based on the value of exports out of the US market — more than $10bn (R 179.53bn) in 2024 in BMW's case — rather than the number of exported vehicles, he said. If both sides were to agree on such a mechanism, it could also benefit imports of car parts, according to people familiar with the matter. 'We have an important point because we are the largest car exporter in the US,' Zipse said, referring to the 225,000 cars it exported out of the country in 2024. Hefty tariffs on car imports to the US have left European carmakers scrambling to respond while hoping for a deal to minimise their impact in talks between Washington and the European Commission. Sources told Reuters earlier this week that Brussels had proposed a package of measures to ease the pressure, including export and investment credits and mutual reductions in existing tariff rates.

BMW CEO Zipse optimistic on 'manageable' US car tariff agreement
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said on Friday he is optimistic that the EU and the US will soon reach a 'manageable' agreement on car import tariffs, potentially including a mechanism to offset imports with exports. Zipse's comments come as Europe awaits a letter from the US administration under Donald Trump that could outline the framework of a trade deal and clarify tariff levels on European automotive exports. Trump said on Thursday the EU could receive a letter on tariff rates by Friday. 'I'm optimistic that there will be a manageable outcome but we have to wait for the result,' Zipse told journalists at a company event in Munich on Friday. He said a possible 'netting mechanism' could be part of the deal, allowing exports from the US to offset imports. BMW stands to benefit from such an arrangement, as its largest production site is in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Got a spare R24.6m? Then the new Lanzante 95-59 could be yours
British automotive engineering firm Lanzante has revealed its new limited run 95-59 supercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The car's cryptic name pays tribute to the Lanzante-run McLaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995. The '59' refers to the number of units planned for production. Built on a current McLaren platform and clad in exposed 'Ueno Grey' carbon fibre bodywork, the 95-59 features a three-seat layout with the driver positioned centrally — a clear nod to the iconic McLaren F1. It also offers space for luggage and a generous cruising range, giving it real-world usability beyond pure track-day thrills. Tipping the scales at just 1,250kg and riding on staggered lightweight forged aluminium wheels (19" front, 20" rear), the 95-59 is full of interesting design details: dihedral doors, a floating active rear wing, glass roof panels and a centrally mounted titanium exhaust inspired by the 'brutalist organic forms' of the fifth-generation F-22 fighter jet. Hidden from view but just as impressive are Inconel exhaust headers, titanium secondary and tailpipes, titanium body fixings and gold-plated heat shielding throughout the engine bay and exhaust system (another clear homage to the legendary F1). Power comes from a 4.0 l twin-turbocharged V8 producing a claimed 633kW and 880Nm. That gives the 95-59 a power-to-weight ratio of 522kW per tonne. Impressive. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed SSG gearbox. While Lanzante hasn't released any official performance figures yet, expect it to be ludicrously fast — as it should be, given its equally ludicrous £1,020,000 (R24.6m) price tag.
