Magda Szubanski's shock career move following rare blood cancer diagnosis: 'Close to my heart'

Daily Mail10-06-2025

Famed Australian actress Magda Szubansk is set to reboot the fictional character that made her a household name.
The 64-year-old, who revealed last month that she has been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, will appear as her beloved Kath & Kim sitcom character Sharon Strzelecki in a new nationwide mental health initiative.
Magda, who originated the part in the TV classic Kath and Kim, will revive Sharon for a 60 second ad for Medibank's 'Family Roast' campaign.
Based around around a card game intended to help Australians have more 'meaningful' conversations around mental health, the Family Roast will also introduce two new characters - Sharon's children Tim and Pam.
'Supporting the mental well-being of Australians has always been close to my heart - whether through making people laugh, or through raising awareness and funds for trauma,' Magda, who has been working on the campaign for three months, announced on Tuesday.

'This is a fantastic initiative, and we hope it gives everyday Aussies some practical tools to better understand mental health and connect more meaningfully with one another.'
Medibank's announcement revealed that the ad campaign, which drops on June 8, will feature Magda as Sharon and her 'children' playing the Family Roast card game and 'getting to know each other on a deeper level.'
Magda starred as the unlucky in love Sharon in the ABC hit comedy Kath & Kim from 2002 to 2005 and again in 2007 and 2022, as well as two films, Da Kath & Kim Code in 2005 and Kath & Kimderella in 2012.
The sitcom, which also starred Jane Turner, Gina Riley, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn, went on to become one of Australia's most beloved comedies.
It comes after Magda revealed last month that she has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
The Australian comedian announced she is battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma - a rare and fast-moving blood cancer.
Sharing the news on line Magda appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease.
'Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,' she began.
'It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team.
'Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, so I feel very fortunate.
'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time.'
Magda said she has started a treatment called the Nordic protocol, which treats Mantle Cell Lymphoma by shrinking the tumours with a combination of drugs administered in five phases.
It's known as the Nordic regimen based upon its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway.
The actress explained she will be 'lying very low' due to her weak immune system.
'I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said.
'Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more.
'Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.'
The Kath & Kim star said the cancer was discovered during a routine breast screening.
'This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,' she explained.
'TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body!

Christie Brinkley reveals ex-husband Billy Joel was dating Aussie model Elle Macpherson when she met him

Christie Brinkley has revealed a surprising detail about the early days of her romance with music legend Billy Joel - and it involves none other than Aussie supermodel Elle Macpherson. Speaking to Stellar Magazine this week, Christie recalled how Joel was casually still dating the statuesque Australian when she first met the Piano Man. 'We were at his apartment and he said, "I'm going to call Elle because I've been out with her a couple of times and I want to let her know that now I want to be exclusive with you",' Brinkley recounted. The stunning revelation offers a glimpse into the rock-and-roll love triangle that once quietly played out between two of the world's most recognisable models and one of America's most celebrated singers. In her memoir, Brinkley doesn't hold back, revealing a life filled with both dazzling success and private pain - from surviving a horrific helicopter crash to enduring domestic abuse and heartbreak from her high-profile marriages. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. But it's her relationship with Joel - and the genuine bond they continue to share - that remains a highlight. The pair married in 1985 and welcomed daughter Alexa Ray Joel the same year, eventually divorcing in 1994. Despite the split, they've remained close friends. Brinkley also revealed that the family is supporting Joel as he battles a rare brain disorder. 'Alexa just had a long conversation with him and she said he sounded good. We're all just cheering him on,' she said. Brinkley also touched on how the industry has changed since her modelling heyday, recalling the 'magic' of film photography and lamenting the overly curated, digital-driven world of today's image-making. 'Now there are so many cooks in the kitchen, you don't have that same kind of magic,' she explained. And when it comes to ageing, the model has no time for outdated stereotypes. While she embraces modern beauty options, she believes true vitality comes from within. 'Energy and curiosity are more useful than any cream you can buy in a jar,' she said. Reflecting on their time together, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit alum, who has been married four times, she previously said their marriage was 'really wonderful,' per Page Six. She called the Piano Man her 'soulmate' but said that they started having marriage problems when he would disappear for days while he was on a bender. 'If there wasn't that issue,' she said about his addiction. 'I do think that we were probably really soulmates. It was an amazing time of my life.' She continued: 'I had so much fun. We were such nomads, gypsies — just between his job and mine, we were seeing the world. It was wonderful, really wonderful.' Brinkley claimed that once he left their daughter Alexa Ray's fifth birthday party and was missing for two days. She said she had 'visions of his car wrapped around a tree' and she experienced a 'panic I couldn't shake.' She also recalled how he once vanished during Thanksgiving dinner and another time she saw photos of him out with an Australian actress after a separate disappearance.

Aussie stylist Chris Kontos brutally slams Kim Kardashian's daring look at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding bash

An Australian stylist has weighed in on Kim Kardashian 's bold fashion choice at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's lavish Italian wedding celebration - and he didn't hold back. Chris Kontos, an outspoken creative, shared a video to his Instagram on Saturday critiquing Kim's daring gown, which she showed off while arriving via boat to the star-studded event in Venice over the weekend. In the clip, Kontos declared: 'All right. I have to say it - Kim needs to move on from the Balenciaga era. Like, Demna is in an exhibition - it's done. When something's exhibited, it means it's the end. It's like a period in time. We're reflecting.' 'Doesn't mean Rick Owens is dead in vibe - just putting it out there - he's still gonna deliver f**k-off vibes forever. But Kim?' Referring to the bride, Kontos continued with a swipe: 'Do you reckon she's trying to get the attention away from that woman that's getting married - whatever her name is?' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, s ubscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The high-profile stylist, who has worked across Australia's fashion and retail industries for over two decades, went on to suggest Kardashian should embrace her own brand collaborations instead. 'Maybe she should wear some of that collaboration she did with SKIMS and Cavalli -because that fits the vibe.' While clearly unimpressed by Kim's dark, glistening form-fitting gown, Kontos did offer some praise for her famous family. 'I mean, Kris looks amazing and Kylie's delivering rose vibes anyway,' he noted. As the former Creative Director for Adelaide Fashion Festival and founder of Chris Kontos Creative, the seasoned fashion insider has built a name for bold opinions and rebranding iconic labels. His portfolio includes work with Harris Scarfe, Acler, Rundle Mall, and Jac + Mooki. Kontos has also mentored emerging designers, worked with influencers and media at national fashion events. Meanwhile, Kim turned heads at Bezos' extravagant celebration in a glittering, body-hugging black dress with a plunging neckline, styled with layered diamond jewellery and her signature sleek hair. She was seen being assisted off a boat while flanked by security as she made her glamorous entrance. The Amazon founder and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez tied the knot in front of 200 high-profile guests on the private island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. The A-list guest list included Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates. Bezos and Sanchez's wedding weekend has captured global headlines. The wedding has gone viral, not only for its VIP guest list but also for its opulent setting, with guests ferried across the Venetian lagoon via private boats, indulging in Michelin-starred cuisine and designer fashion.
