Rookie Philadelphia police officer shot in stomach while trying to break up fight near high school
A 26-year-old Philadelphia police officer was in critical condition Wednesday after being shot while responding to a fight outside Overbrook High School.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel strongly condemned the incident, calling it a dangerous example of adults making bad decisions and putting lives at risk.
At a press conference Wednesday evening, Bethel did not hold back when talking about the 30-year-old man now under arrest for allegedly bringing a gun to a student fight and firing it."There's been fights at the school that happened since I was a kid," Bethel said. "But what I never would do was call an adult to my fight. And then when you are an adult, you're a d--- adult. And you're supposed to know that."

The police got a call around 2:42 p.m. from school safety officers at Overbrook High School, asking for help after multiple fights broke out as school let out for the day. Officers showed up and started breaking up the fight, but some students were also fighting with the officers."We have an adult come to it with a weapon that could kill, easily kill my officers," Bethel said. "It makes absolutely no sense."
Bethel said the bullet ricocheted and hit a 26-year-old officer in the stomach, just below his bulletproof vest. The officer, on the job for just over a year and recently assigned to the 19th District, was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he had surgery and is now in critical condition.

"We constantly are encouraging parents, it can't just be us. Can't be just [Superintendent] Dr. B. Watlington and the school district," said Bethel. "Parents are engaged in this process. But when a 30-year-old man comes to a fight with children, what the h--- are they gonna do?"
"And then you bring a gun. So you're a coward anyway. You're gonna come to the fight, come to fight. But you bring a gun and then you fire the weapon. Anyone could have been injured. Unfortunately, my officer is the one who was injured in this case."

As for the adult suspect, Commissioner Bethel said: "You're supposed to be the one who has to come in there to de-escalate, not escalate."

PETA sues Maine Lobster Festival saying the steaming of 16,000 live crustaceans is torture
Animal rights group PETA has filed a lawsuit against the Maine Lobster Festival, claiming the event organizers are torturing lobsters by steaming them to eat. The lawsuit, filed July 24 in Knox County Superior Court, claims the festival and the city of Rockland, where the event is held, are acting in violation of Maine law prohibiting the torture and torment of animals, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reported. PETA argues in the suit that the festival is 'one of the most egregious violations of Maine's animal protection statutes occurring anywhere on public land in the state: the systematic torture of approximately 16,000 live, sentient animals at the Maine Lobster Festival held annually at Harbor Park in Rockland, Maine.' The group's attorneys argued that PETA also filed the lawsuit on behalf of Rockland residents who lose access to walkways, public kayaking and canoeing, intertidal lands, and related civic spaces during the festival. "These individuals cannot access public trust resources without encountering and accepting intolerable conditions: the illegal public torture and killing of thousands of individual sentient lobsters via live steaming." In the suit, PETA argues that because lobsters are sentient beings, they are able to feel pain, and should be protected under Maine law, which requires any method used to kill a sentient creature must cause instantaneous death. PETA argues that the lobsters remain neurologically active and can feel the pain, suffering for several minutes when they are steamed. Meanwhile, event organizers say they're going by the books. An event organizer told WMTW they use 'traditional, lawful and widely accepted cooking methods' when steaming lobsters, and that there is no scientific evidence the crustaceans can feel pain. A hearing has not yet been scheduled for PETA's request for an injunction to stop the steaming of the lobsters. The annual event begins July 30, and runs through August 3.

The thieves smashed through one of the windows of his house, then threatened the frightened elderly man with a hammer, taking cash and the keys to his Jaguar before driving off in the vehicle. With police in hot pursuit, the suspects decided to try out the British sports car's V8, pushing it to ridiculous speeds for narrow city streets. While the driver was okay after the crash, his accomplices weren't. A teenager who was in the front passenger seat suffered an injury to his leg. The guy who was in the backseat wasn't belted in, so in the collision he was thrown into the center console. Both police officers in the unmarked car were injured as well. One suffered 'bruising and pain' which doesn't sound too bad, but the other has 'permanent scarring' on his hip. In a 90 mph head-on crash, it's lucky nobody was killed.
